Pune: Eight people, including a woman, were killed and four others, including two children, were injured when a speeding car crashed into a stationary pickup van in front of an eatery near Kirloskar Company along the Jejuri-Morgaon Road around 6.45pm on Wednesday.
Assistant inspector Deepak Waghchoure of the Jejuri police said, "Three of the deceased were travelling in the car, including Indapur resident Kiran Bharat Raut, who was driving the four-wheeler. The eatery owner, his two employees and two passersby were among the remaining five deceased."
Pune Rural superintendent of police (SP) Sandeep Singh Gill told TOI, "The injured victims, including a woman and two children travelling in the car, have been admitted to a private hospital.
The cause of the accident is being ascertained. The pickup van was parked in front of the eatery to unload a refrigerator that was being delivered to the establishment."
Apart from Raut and eatery owner Somnath Ramchandra Vayse, the police identified the other deceased as Ramu Sanjeevan Yadav, Ajaykumar Chauhan, Ajit Ashok Jadhav, Ashwini Santosh and Akshay Sanjay Raut. The identity of the eighth deceased was being ascertained, the police said.

According to Waghchoure, Raut and five others from his family were on their way back to Indapur after attending a marriage ceremony in Alandi. The accident occurred barely a kilometre after the car passed Jejuri. Vayse was supervising the unloading of the refrigerator with the help of his two employees when the car hit them and the two passersby.
"What caused the crash could not be ascertained because the car driver had died in the accident.
We will get the car examined by a technical expert from the regional transport office," he said.
The officer said the impact of the crash indicated that the car was being driven at a high speed. It was reduced to a mangled heap after hitting the pickup van from behind. The car's airbags deployed as the driver and the person travelling in the adjacent seat were wearing seatbelts. Still, the impact of the crash proved fatal, said Waghchoure.
"The bodies have been sent to the primary health centre in Jejuri for postmortem. The condition of the injured victims was reported as stable. Doctors said they were out of danger," Waghchoure said.

Greece Launches Investigation into Former Transport Minister Following Deadly Train Collision

Representative AI image Greece's parliament voted Thursday to investigate a former transport minister over the country's worst rail tragedy that left 57 dead in 2023. Government lawmakers approved the probe into the actions of Kostas Karamanlis, who has welcomed the investigation as an opportunity to clear his name. Fifty-seven people, most of them young students, were killed in February 2023 when a passenger train and a freight train collided in Tempe, central Greece, having been allowed to run on the same track for 12 minutes. The tragedy sparked sweeping strikes and hundreds of protests in Greece and abroad. Karamanlis, a member of one of Greece's most influential political families, told lawmakers that he would "never forget" the night of the accident. He insisted he had done "everything" in his power to improve the state of Greek railways. "I did not neglect, I did not ignore the railways, quite the opposite," Karamanlis said during the debate that began Wednesday. "I too want justice... I fully support the proposal" to set up a special inquiry committee, he added. A parliamentary committee will now examine whether Karamanlis should be referred to justice for breach of duty, a misdemeanour-level offence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo Opposition parties, who had sought criminal charges for Karamanlis, accused the conservative government of seeking to "launder" its responsibilities by backing a probe into a lesser charge. Some parties had sought to implicate Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself. Taking the floor on Wednesday, Mitsotakis dismissed as "disgraceful" a proposal by leftist and far-right parties to have him investigated for high treason. Over 40 people have been prosecuted over the collision, including the station master responsible for routing the trains that night. Lawmakers already voted to refer a former junior minister, Christos Triantopoulos, to justice on possible misdemeanour charges for breach of duty in connection with the aftermath of the accident. Opposition parties say Triantopoulos, who was dispatched by the prime minister to the scene after the accident, authorised the bulldozing of the crash site, which led to the loss of vital evidence. Triantopoulos denies wrongdoing. Greece's intercity trains came under private management in 2017, when state-owned Greek rail operator TrainOSE was privatised and sold to Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, becoming Hellenic Train. In April, a bomb exploded outside Hellenic Train's offices, without causing any injuries.

Four sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 murder of Shiv Sena leader Mohan Raut

THANE: The Thane sessions court on Wednesday convicted four individuals for the 2014 murder of Shiv Sena leader Mohan Raut from Badlapur. A N Sirsikar, a special judge of the MCOCA court, found them guilty on multiple grounds and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The murder took place on May 23, 2014, when two of the accused entered Raut's office in Apte Wadi, Badlapur, at around 11.30am. They fired 11 rounds of bullets, four of which hit Raut. He was rushed to AIMS Hospital in Dombivli for treatment where he was later declared dead, according to police officers. The case sent shockwaves across political and local communities, given Raut's standing as a prominent leader and corporator. Following the murder, the Thane police launched an investigation that revealed the nature of the attack. The number of shots fired and the execution-style killing pointed to a premeditated conspiracy. The case was eventually registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). After three years of trial proceedings, the court found four accused—Chandrakant alias Pintya Balaram Mhaskat, Gangaram alias Gangya Atmaram Linge, Yogesh Narayan Raut, and Ajay alias Ajya Gajanan Gurav—guilty under Section 302 (murder) read with 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). All four have been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined ₹5,000, failing to pay it will attract an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment. Special public prosecutor Sangita Fad said, 'The court examined 30 eyewitnesses, including the individual who recorded the deceased's dying declaration. All ballistic and forensic reports related to the bullets used in the firing, as well as the firearms recovered from the accused, tested positive and supported the prosecution's case.' The convicts were also found guilty under sections 452 and 34 IPC for house trespass in furtherance of a common intention. For this offence, they were sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹1,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment. The court, in its detailed order, highlighted the calculated nature of the crime and observed that it was a clear attempt to eliminate a political rival. The verdict is welcomed by Raut's family and members of the Shiv Sena who described the court's decision as delayed but just, said a police officer from Badlapur East police station.

Telangana HC orders GHMC to return pet dog to owner, says rules not followed during seizure; imposes conditions for safe relocation

The Telangana High Court intervened in the case of a seized pet dog, directing the GHMC to release it HYDERABAD: The Telanagna high court on Wednesday directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation ( GHMC ) to immediately release a pet dog seized from its owner, observing that the action was taken without following due process of law and without adequate medical care for the animal. The court also imposed conditions on the owner while releasing the dog. Justice B Vijaysen Reddy passed this interim order in a petition filed by EB Dakshina Murthy (58), an astrologer from Chikkadpally, who had challenged the seizure of his pet dog 'Ares', reportedly a Dogo Argentino breed, by GHMC authorities acting on police instructions. He alleged the dog was confined in a small cage with no proper food or medical attention and urged the court to direct its release. Murthy contended that despite holding a valid pet licence, his dog was forcibly taken away by GHMC officials on May 19 based on a complaint from his brother EB Narsimha Murthy. According to the police and GHMC, the seizure followed a complaint lodged by the petitioner's brother, who alleged that the dog was being used to threaten him and other residents. The complaint led to the registration of an FIR at Chikkadpally police station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo The authorities also submitted medical records showing that the complainant had sustained injuries allegedly caused by the dog. However, the court noted that the GHMC had acted without issuing a notice to the petitioner or ensuring proper care for the dog. It found merit in the petitioner's argument that due procedure was not followed. Pending further hearing, the court directed the GHMC's deputy director (veterinary), Secunderabad zone, to release the dog forthwith. However, the court also imposed certain restrictions, barring the petitioner from keeping the dog at his current residence and instructing him to relocate the animal to a safer environment away from strangers. The court further directed the petitioner to implead his brother, the complainant, as a party to the writ petition and clarified that the order would not prevent authorities from taking lawful action if it is ultimately established that the breed in question is banned in India. The matter has been posted to July 9 for further hearing.
