Eight killed, four injured as car crashes into stationary pickup van near Jejuri

1 2 3 Pune: Eight people, including a woman, were killed and four others, including two children, were injured when a speeding car crashed into a stationary pickup van in front of an eatery near Kirloskar Company along the Jejuri-Morgaon Road around 6.45pm on Wednesday. Assistant inspector Deepak Waghchoure of the Jejuri police said, "Three of the deceased were travelling in the car, including Indapur resident Kiran Bharat Raut, who was driving the four-wheeler. The eatery owner, his two employees and two passersby were among the remaining five deceased." Pune Rural superintendent of police (SP) Sandeep Singh Gill told TOI, "The injured victims, including a woman and two children travelling in the car, have been admitted to a private hospital. The cause of the accident is being ascertained. The pickup van was parked in front of the eatery to unload a refrigerator that was being delivered to the establishment." Apart from Raut and eatery owner Somnath Ramchandra Vayse, the police identified the other deceased as Ramu Sanjeevan Yadav, Ajaykumar Chauhan, Ajit Ashok Jadhav, Ashwini Santosh and Akshay Sanjay Raut. The accident occurred barely a kilometre after the car passed Jejuri. Vayse was supervising the unloading of the refrigerator with the help of his two employees when the car hit them and the two passersby. "What caused the crash could not be ascertained because the car driver had died in the accident. We will get the car examined by a technical expert from the regional transport office," he said. The officer said the impact of the crash indicated that the car was being driven at a high speed. It was reduced to a mangled heap after hitting the pickup van from behind. The car's airbags deployed as the driver and the person travelling in the adjacent seat were wearing seatbelts. Still, the impact of the crash proved fatal, said Waghchoure. "The bodies have been sent to the primary health centre in Jejuri for postmortem. The condition of the injured victims was reported as stable. Doctors said they were out of danger," Waghchoure said.
