An investigation revealed, at 2:30 a.m. 35-year-old Joseph Boatman had picked up his 21-month-old daughter from a family member's home, strapped her into the car seat, went inside but did not return.
STPSO detectives said the child was in the vehicle for over nine hours.
They add that prior to the incident, Boatman allegedly consumed multiple alcoholic beverages.
'This is a devastating loss that no family ever wants to face,' Sheriff Randy Smith said. 'When a child is left in a vehicle, especially on a day when the heat index climbs over 100 degrees, the outcome can turn deadly in a matter of minutes. This case involved compromised judgment, and the result was heartbreaking.'

Four firefighters, two civilians injured in Jefferson Parish fire

METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — An infant is among six people who were injured in an apartment building fire in Metairie on Tuesday afternoon. Some firefighters also needed to be treated. Jefferson Parish Fire Chief Charles Hudson said firefighters arrived at the scene around 5:05 p.m., where they found heavy fire coming from the second floor of the building. Several people were trapped. 'There's one adult that was taken to university with heavy burns, and an infant was brought to children's hospital with heavy burns,' Hudson said. Man dies in Montegut house fire Christon Morgan, who lived on the first floor of the building, said that he was driving home from work when he saw his home on fire. 'I thought the gas station was on fire at first because I couldn't see the apartment from behind the gas station. So, once I made it to the corner, I noticed that our apartment was on fire,' Morgan said. Morgan says, during the fire, the injured man was seen hanging from the balcony and eventually collapsed on the street. He says that scene is something he will never forget. Other than the infant and the adult resident, four firefighters were taken away by ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. Hudson says that, due to their hard work and the civilian heroes who helped them, the remaining occupants of the complex were able to escape with little to no harm. 'People just stopped and saw the fire and started helping, and as we arrived on the scene, started pointing us in the right direction to get to the back of the building and get up on the second floor, where they did have people still in the building and we got them out safe and sound,' Hudson Posts Early showers but not much later in the day TikTok impersonation scheme hits Florida barber shop New Orleans to honor Katrina's 20th anniversary with week of events and summit Fans may have saved Mona Lisa French Quarter restaurant Saints name starting quarterback for preseason opener versus Chargers Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
