Boeing plane lands back in China for delivery as tariff war eases
SEOUL: A new Boeing 737 MAX landed back in China on Monday, flight tracking data showed, a sign the US planemaker was resuming deliveries to Chinese customers as Beijing and Washington ease their tariff war. Boeing, which halted deliveries of new planes to China in April as the world's two largest economies ramped up tariffs on each other, said at the end of May deliveries would resume in June after the tariffs were temporarily scaled back for 90 days. The plane, painted in the livery of Xiamen Airlines, landed at Boeing's Zhoushan completion centre near China's commercial hub of Shanghai, after leaving Seattle on Saturday, and halting to refuel in Hawaii and Guam as it crossed the Pacific. Data from tracking app Flightradar24 shows Boeing had originally ferried the craft to Zhoushan in March, before its return to the United States in mid-April, when Chinese airlines stopped taking new Boeing aircraft. Boeing, Xiamen Airlines and regulator the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) did not immediately respond to requests for comment. China represents about 10% of Boeing's commercial backlog and is an important and growing aviation market. Representatives of China and the United States will meet in London on Monday to discuss a trade deal. US accepts Boeing jet from Qatar for use as Air Force One At least three 737 MAX jets were repatriated by Boeing to the United States in April from Zhoushan, where they were to receive final touches before delivery to Chinese carriers. The first to return was the same one that landed on Monday. Boeing has previously said customers in China would not take delivery of new planes due to tariffs, and it was looking to resell potentially dozens of aircraft. However the planemaker had not sent the planes elsewhere, despite wanting to cut inventory. Beijing has not commented on why Boeing deliveries stopped, but said Chinese airlines and Boeing had been severely affected by US-imposed tariffs. In April, Boeing said it had planned for 50 jets to go to Chinese carriers during the rest of the year, with 41 in production or pre-built.

China's May crude imports at 4-mth low amid widespread refinery maintenance
China's crude oil imports fell in May to their lowest daily rate in four months, data showed on Monday, as planned maintenance work at both state-owned and independent refiners picked up. May imports in the world's largest crude buyer totalled 46.6 million metric tons, equivalent to 10.97 million barrels per day (bpd), according to data from the General Administration of Customs. The volume dropped by 3% compared with 48.06 million tons in April, and also fell 0.78% from May 2024. In the first five months of 2025, China imported 229.61 million metric tons, or 11.1 million bpd, up 0.3% from the same period a year earlier, the data showed. Maintenance affected a combined refining capacity of 129.9 million tons per year, or about 2.6 million bpd, up by 19.2 million tons from April, according to data by local consultancy Oilchem. 'May is typically the peak maintenance season in China, so refineries intentionally reduced their purchases of cargoes arriving in May,' Muyu Xu, Kpler's senior crude oil analyst, said. 'In addition, crude prices were relatively high earlier, so long-term contract volumes, especially from Saudi Arabia, were significantly cut back. On top of that, Iranian oil arrivals were very low in May, which made overall seaborne imports quite weak.' However, import are expected to rebound in June. China April crude oil imports up 'That's because the volume of long-term contract barrels from the Middle East arriving in June will increase notably, and arbitrage barrels from other regions, such as Brazilian crude, will also rise. However, Iranian crude imports may remain low, roughly on par with May levels,' Muyu Xu said. Monday's data also showed China's refined fuel exports fell 17.62% in May to 4.41 million tons from a year earlier. Natural gas imports - including piped gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) - fell 10.8% on the year to 10.11 million tons, the data showed. Imports of spot LNG remained weak as Asian prices hovered above $11/mmBtu, a level deemed too expensive for Chinese buyers given ample domestic supplies and weaker-than-expected industrial consumption of the fuel, traders have said.

Starbucks to lower prices in China as competition heats up
BEIJING: Starbucks China will lower the prices of some of its iced drinks by an average of 5 yuan ($0.70) across the country, the company announced on Monday, as competition intensifies and consumers become more cautious about spending. In a post on its Weixin social media account, the US coffee chain said it would offer more 'accessible' prices on dozens of its drinks, including non-coffee drinks and the Frappuccino, from Tuesday. While China is Starbucks' second-largest market after the US, the coffee market is highly competitive and consumers have become more cautious about spending because of the slowing economy and concerns about job security. The new approach means some of Starbucks' drinks will be priced as low as 23 yuan, the post said. Domestic rivals such as Luckin Coffee and Cotti have priced their drinks as low as 9.9 or even 8.8 yuan, while deep-pocketed internet companies and Alibaba Group have entered the food delivery market, adding to the competition. Starbucks's China comeback relies on right partner, brewing back the vibe With offers and vouchers, Chinese coffee consumers can buy themselves a drink for as little as 2.9 yuan. A person close to Starbucks, said the company was not reducing prices in response to intense price competition, but looking to attract more customers in the afternoon. The individual requested anonymity as they were not in a role that allowed them to comment to the media. 'Starbucks likely has a longer-term strategy, which is to focus on the demand for non-coffee items in the afternoon among consumers,' the source said. Starbucks had said previously that it would not engage in a price war. However, it has also introduced smaller-sized drinks and issued coupons which have lowered prices for customers. The US giant has also been looking to revive its business in China via selling stakes in the business .
