Reflecting on the stellar career of legendary Erie DJ Mojo McKay
Erie has lost another radio legend. Longtime morning radio DJ Mojo McKay has died.
He was the longtime morning man on Rocket 105. For decades, much of Erie woke up to Mojo McKay on Rocket.
He had a vast knowledge of rock and roll and he was popular because of his whacky sense of humor, poking fun a most anything, his energetic style and his knowledge of Erie history and politics.
He was also known to have fun with live in-studio guests.
'He invited me onto the rocket morning show, and I immediately became a friend of the show, and he had me back a few other times, and he couldn't have been more of a gracious guy,' said Meteorologist and guest Craig Flint.
Longtime radio DJ Joe Lang was a Boston Store studio colleague of McKay's for many years.
He said McKay shook the local radio market, which at the time was full of what Lang called gentleman DJs.
'They were like 'good morning, 6:35, it's cloudy' but then Mojo came in and it went boom. He did all these wacky stunts, did these things on the air. Everyone knows his story. He proposed to his wife on the air, so it was something we had never seen in Erie before,' Lang recalled.
And Lang said McKay was just as popular off the air.
'In a market like this, you can transcend radio. You see them at restaurants, bars, out buying clothes and stuff like that, and when you do, they would always stop and talk. You never wanted to go anywhere with Mojo because you'd never get there,' he continued.
Mojo McKay's career ended last August when he was furloughed by iHeart Media in a nationwide layoff.
His many radio fans, and those who knew him best, even guests on his show, knew McKay had the talent to work anywhere in the country. But he remained an ambassador for Erie.
'You know a lot of people aspire to move on to these bigger markets, and Moj was like, no, I'm good here, I'm good here,' Lang went on to say.
Mojo McKay, whose real name is Michael Sroka, was a native of Olean, NY, and came to the area to attend Edinboro University. He was 62.
He is survived by his son, Jack, and a sister, Carol.

Robbie Williams' boldest tour yet proves the 90s aren't dead
Robbie Williams first captured the nation's hearts back in 1990 when he burst onto the music scene as a cheeky and loveable member of beloved boyband Take That. Now, 35 years on from his fresh-faced debut, his latest UK tour has well and truly proved that the 90s aren't dead. The 51-year-old pop icon has been wowing fans up and down the UK on his highly anticipated 2025 tour, with shows in Edinburgh, London and now Manchester's Coop Live Arena. The singer of 'Angels' promised this tour would be his 'boldest yet', and judging by the audience response on Wednesday, June 12, he certainly delivered. The concert kicks off with a fusion of futuristic tech and nostalgic messages, reminding everyone in attendance why we're here, to simply savour the music. READ MORE: Hundreds of Wetherspoon pubs introduce new menu with daily meal deals READ MORE: Asda reduces 'silky feel' bedding to £7 in sale Following a series of tongue-in-cheek messages from AI-generated replicas of icons like Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Elvis, Robbie takes to the stage in a rather understated Troy Bolton-style bright red vest and matching trousers. It's an ensemble he sticks with for most of the evening, switching into a pink version halfway through the show. Kicking off the set with 'Rocket' didn't quite appear to hit the mark with the crowd initially, but any reservations were swiftly forgotten when the opening chords to 'Let Me Entertain You' rang out. This became a recurring theme throughout the night, as Robbie switched on his 90s boyband popstar persona to deliver the evening's highlights, interspersed with less popular tracks from his long showbiz career. Robbie wasn't shy about being the butt of the joke if it meant winning the crowd back over. Throughout the night, the former Take That member engaged with the audience. Fans heard the star's heartfelt revelations about his journey as he spoke candidly about his battles with addiction and mental health, thanking his fans for their unwavering support. A particularly touching moment came during "I Love My Life," which he dedicated to his wife and children. Robbie spent a significant portion of the evening chatting to his audience, leaving the evening feeling more like 'an evening with Robbie', rather than a straightforward gig of back-to-back hits. And when it came to the classics, Robbie often let the audience take over the singing. For this reviewer, the high point of the evening came in the final 10 minutes when Robbie powerfully performed Angels and Feel. These iconic songs were destined to steal the spotlight, with everyone lighting up their phones for a truly magical atmosphere. Tony Iommi Charts His First Solo Top 40 Hit Thanks To An Unlikely Feature
Tony Iommi joins Robbie Williams on 'Rocket,' earning his first solo top 40 hit in the United ... More Kingdom on multiple sales charts. Guitarist Tony Iommi is shown performing on stage during a live concert appearance with Black Sabbath on August 8, 2013. (Photo by)"n Tony Iommi is regarded as a god in the rock world, and has been for decades. He first rose to prominence as one of the founding members of Black Sabbath and, for years, he helped bring heavy metal to the masses with his signature guitar sound. While he's primarily known for his work with that group, Iommi does occasionally release music under his own name. The superstar scores a hit song in his home country of the United Kingdom this week by teaming up with a somewhat surprising figure. Iommi earns a top 40 hit on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles Sales charts this frame. He joins Robbie Williams on the track "Rocket," which opens at Nos. 34 and 36, respectively, on those tallies, becoming a top 40 bestseller in the nation. It appears that "Rocket" is Iommi's first solo hit on both of those rankings. As a member of Black Sabbath, he's only reached the lists once, as "Paranoid" spent one frame on the rosters in August 2022. Of course, it's worth mentioning that these tallies didn't exist during the heyday of the heavy metal act. Iommi has landed more than one solo placement on the Official Rock & Metal Albums roster with his solo collections, but those titles didn't produce any hit songs across the Atlantic. "Rocket" serves as the lead single from Williams's upcoming album Britpop. It's interesting that the first taste of a full-length named after a style of pop music from the U.K. wouldn't typically be classified under that genre, and would feature one of the most recognizable figures in metal — but that's Williams, playing another one of his jokes. While Iommi may be new to these rankings, Williams has already scored a number of hits. The pop icon has racked up a dozen smashes on the Official Singles Sales chart and well over two dozen on the Official Singles Downloads list. A top 40 start is impressive for Iommi but rather low for Williams, one of the most successful pop stars in U.K. history. The tune doesn't reach the main list of the most consumed songs — the Official Singles chart — at least not yet, which is a bit disappointing.
