Mr Brain picked out vulnerable women to abuse in the "cult" he led within the Church of England, the court heard on Friday.The woman described Mr Brain as a "monster" who "almost had a sixth sense" for people who were vulnerable.She said Mr Brain had turned up at her house after she had worked through the night as a volunteer helping families identify dead relatives at the scene of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 Liverpool supporters died.The woman said she had returned home at 06:00 BST after "the most traumatic night of my life" and was struggling to sleep, when Mr Brain was let in to her house by her husband "to congratulate me on what I'd done".In a police interview played to the jury, the woman broke down in tears as she told a detective: "He climbed into bed with me and started touching me and praising me and stroking my hair."Having never seen a dead body, I had just seen 94 dead bodies, I was lying at home in bed and this monster climbs into bed with me."I just laid there, I don't know what time he left, I don't know how long it was for, but I know it was horrible."
Cross examining the woman, Mr Brain's barrister Iain Simkin KC suggested his client's actions were not sexual.The woman replied: "I think someone's hands all over your body when you hadn't asked them to put them there, that's sexual assault."She told the court Mr Brain was "a predator," who "picked off women he thought were vulnerable".The woman described another occasion when she feared the priest was going to rape her after pushing her to the floor of his home.She said Mr Brain had suddenly pushed her down and said: "You need to admit that you're somebody who wants to be raped and until you admit that you can't be a spiritual person."The court heard Mr Brain would talk about his "mission" of "creating a sort of postmodern expression of sexuality".The woman said Mr Brain presided over a "deeply psychologically abusive" movement with a culture of fear, intimidation and bullying and his power was "reinforced by the Church," which fast-tracked him for priesthood in 1991.NOS was initially celebrated by Church of England leaders for its nightclub-style services which incorporated live music and multimedia and attracted hundreds of young people to its congregation.But prosecutors have told the jury NOS "became a cult," in which Mr Brain abused his position to sexually assault "a staggering number" of women from his congregation.The trial continues.

Man (36) jailed for raping his partner and caught trying to strangle her
A man who raped his partner when she was sleeping and was caught by gardaí in the act of trying to strangle her has been jailed for 10 years. Patrick Ward (36), of no fixed abode in Dublin 1, regularly self-harmed and made suicide attempts in front of the woman in an attempt to control her, the Central Criminal Court heard. Advertisement Patricia McLaughlin SC, prosecuting, indicated to the court that the woman wishes for Ward to be named in reporting the case but does not want to be named herself. Counsel said the woman is confident naming him will not identify her. Ward pleaded guilty to one count of raping her in her apartment on a date between April 28th and May 4th 2024. Ms McLaughlin told the court this plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on a full facts basis. Ward has 98 previous convictions, including for sexually assaulting a woman and a teenage girl while they were sleeping in two separate incidents. Advertisement The court heard that Ward and the woman (41) met in 2023 and he moved into her apartment shortly afterwards. The court heard the man was a registered sex offender and failed to notify gardaí about his change of address. He had recently been released from a lengthy prison sentence for one of the sexual assault matters. The court heard that on May 21st 2024, gardaí responded to a 999 call for help. They arrived at the apartment and find Ward on top of the woman, strangling her. He was arrested at the scene. Advertisement The woman had walked into a city centre garda station earlier that day to state she was in fear of Ward, but she was put out of the station for smoking. When she returned home to her apartment, Ward started attacking her, and she managed to call 999. When the woman made a statement to gardaí following the man's arrest, she outlined a history of abuse, including that Ward would regularly threaten suicide and self-harm himself in front of her. She also outlined an incident of rape that had occurred a few weeks prior. Advertisement In relation to this incident, the court heard that she became aware that Ward had raped her when she was sleeping after she found a video recording of it on his phone. She forwarded it to herself before he deleted it. The court heard that in the sexual assault case involving the teenage girl, Ward broke into her property and she awoke to him assaulting her. The sexual assault involving the woman occurred while she was sleeping beside her small child. Ward also has previous convictions for harassment of a former partner, theft, criminal damage, burglary and public order offences. In a victim impact statement which she read out in court, the woman said she struggles with anxiety and night terrors and that she lost her apartment and her job as a result of the trauma inflicted on her. Advertisement 'Every day is a struggle as I try to understand - how could your boyfriend that you trusted at the time, rape you while you're asleep?' she said. 'Two weeks later, he strangled me. I thought I was going to die. I don't think this is something I will ever get to understand.' She said she feels humiliated and disgusted by his actions and that the images she saw when he self-harmed in front of her will never leave her. Under questioning from defence counsel, Daniel O'Connell BL, the woman said she was unaware of the extent of the Ward's criminal history. 'If I knew that he was doing that to women when they were asleep, I would not have felt comfortable,' she said. The garda agreed with defence counsel that the couple had a turbulent relationship with substance abuse issues. She acknowledged that his client had a difficult upbringing and that he has suffered with his mental health for many years having first suffered with depression at the age of 17. In his plea of mitigation to the court, Michael Lynn SC, defending, asked the court to consider that his client is 'on the cusp now' and at a juncture in his life where he has demonstrated a change in mindset and a desire to rehabilitate. Counsel said this was evident by Ward's plea of guilt and remorse which his psychologist is confident is credible. 'He realises now that he needs to change his lifestyle completely to change his life,' Mr Lynn submitted adding that Ward is on enhanced status in the prison. Sentencing Ward on Monday, Ms Justice Greally said the rape was committed for Ward's sexual gratification and that he strangled the woman out of anger and to impose control over her. She said the offence warranted a headline sentence of 16 years taking into account the 'immense breach of trust involved' and the fact that offences occurred in the woman's home. Ms Justice Greally also noted from the victim impact statement the detrimental consequences for the woman, including the loss of her home and occupation. The judge noted that the woman felt 'humiliated, exposed and degraded' and that she felt she was going to die when Ward was strangling her. Her mental health has deteriorated as a result. Ms Justice Greally acknowledged that Ward grew up in a difficult environment where abuse of alcohol was the norm. She acknowledged that he has since demonstrated remorse and has accepted responsibility but she noted that reports before the court indicated that Ward has 'limited insight into intimate partner violence and the impact of it'. Read More Ms Justice Greally reduced the headline sentence to 11 and half years taking into account the mitigating features of the case including Ward's plea of guilty, admissions, the remorse which the judge said he has expressed in multiple ways and a positive report from the governor of the prison. The judge suspended the final 18 months of the sentence on strict conditions including that Ward engage with the Probation Service for 18 months and undergo any courses as recommended by them. She also ordered him not to have any contact either directly or indirectly with the woman or members of her family for the next 40 years. Moment drug dealer congratulates police officers for finding record £1million drugs haul in his car boot after 120mph chase
This is the moment a drug dealer 'congratulated' police officers who found £1million of drugs in the boot of his car after a dramatic 120mph chase. David Sherratt, 48, was found with one of the biggest drugs hauls seized by West Midlands Police following a high speed motorway pursuit. Officers had attempted to pull over his black Peugeot 3008, which was believed to be linked to drug dealing, near Alvechurch, Worcestershire. But he sped off from the scene and led them on a dangerous 120mph chase along the M5 and M42. At one point, a separate team waiting by the side of a motorway deployed a stinger and Sherratt's vehicle lost a tyre before being boxed in. He was arrested and in the boot of the car were several Sports Direct bags, each carrying 18kg of cocaine, worth a wholesale value of £1.3million. Sherratt can be seen on police bodycam telling officers: 'Good day the office isn't it for you? Good day the office lads.' He was also seen smashing his phone against the dashboard in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence. But phone messages revealed he had been involved in the collection of a further 135kg of drugs - worth up to £5 million in total. He would deliver them to customers around the country, earning up to £200 per kilo delivered - and was expecting to earn £20,000 in just six weeks for his work. Last Monday, Sherratt, of no fixed address, was jailed for 12 years and nine months at Birmingham Crown Court. He pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possessing the drug with intent to supply, and dangerous driving. The court heard Sherratt has 12 convictions for 19 offences dating back to 1995. He was jailed for six years in 2016 for conspiracy to supply class A drugs, and more than four years in 2020 for further drugs offences. Detective Chief Inspector Peter Cooke, of the Regional Organised Crime Unit for the West Midlands, said: 'This is a major recovery of drugs that would have ultimately been sold on the streets of the UK and caused untold misery. 'Sherratt's attempt to get away from our officers was dangerous and put other road users at risk, but great work by the Road Crime Team meant the pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion. 'He played a significant role in the distribution of drugs around the country, but will now be spending years behind bars.'

A Rochdale grooming gang paedophile who turned young girls into 'sex slaves' to be used and abused 'wherever, whenever' is feared to have fled the UK. Kasir Bashir was one of seven men convicted of sexually exploiting two teenage girls in the town between 2001 and 2005. The warped 50-year-old was part of a depraved gang of predators who preyed on vulnerable children from the age of 13 who had 'deeply troubled home lives'. Former Rochdale market stall holder Bashir repeatedly raped and abused one teenager at a filthy flat in Oldham when he was in his mid-20s, a court heard. The group would ply the youngsters with booze and drugs before molesting them on rancid mattresses or inside alleyways, cars, warehouses and car parks. His sickening crimes were exposed following a major police operation to clampdown on the grooming gangs plaguing Rochdale. However, on the eve of his criminal trial in January, the pervert vanished - despite having answered police bail weekly in the run up to his court appearance. In his absence, the abuser was convicted by a jury of two counts of rape, as well as two counts of indecency with a child. However, he is still on the run. Now it is feared Bashir may have fled the country, with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launching an international manhunt to bring the sex fiend to justice. It's understood the convicted paedophile was forced to surrender his passport as part of his bail conditions before his trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court. If he has fled overseas, it's feared he may have done so illegally, either using forged documents or a people smuggling gang. Paul Waugh, the MP for Rochdale, has now lashed out and is demanding urgent answers over how Bashir could have slipped through the authorities' grasp. Speaking to Manchester Evening News, the Labour MP said: 'It is deeply alarming that this disgusting grooming gang member absconded on the eve of his trial. 'I have written to both the Ministry of Justice and GMP to ask exactly why a suspected child rapist like Bashir was not considered more of a flight risk or more of a danger to society. 'There are serious questions to answer about the assessment of his suitability for bail and why he was not remanded in custody. The fact that he is at large will rightly anger many of my constituents.' He added: 'Ultimately, this is a matter for the crown court judge in this case. But I have asked the justice minister to check whether there can be a review of the bail decision by the Attorney General, given the natural public interest this involves. 'Just as importantly, I want to make sure no future grooming gang trial will see a repeat of this outrage, and that all those charged with such serious offences are remanded in custody.' A spokesman for GMP said: 'We don't know where Bashir is, but we are determined to find him no matter where he thinks he can hide.' Detective Chief Inspector Guy Laycock, senior investigation officer in the case, added: 'We will do all we can to find Bashir and ensure justice is fully served for them. 'Time was no barrier to bringing these groomers to justice, and Bashir evading the trial, will not stop us ensuring he now faces the full consequences of his actions.' Three of Bashir's co-defendants - Mohammed Shahzad, Naheem Akram, and Nisar Hussain – were also out on bail when he went missing. However, police remanded the them in custody after reportedly receiving intelligence they were planning to abscond. The trio all deny the accusations, but Judge Jonathan Seely said the court was not prepared to take the risk that they may abscond.
