SA scholar Jonny Steinberg calls for cautious approach to Mkhwanazi's allegations
Mkhwanazi held a media briefing recently to allege that parts of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been captured by criminal syndicates.
Steinberg, who is an acclaimed writer on South Africa's democratic history and politics, has questioned the timing of the press conference and Mkhwanazi's choice to wear military garb while surrounded by officials carrying automatic weapons.
He also questioned why the general chose not to use another platform to bring his allegations against Mchunu.
"You know this is a police officer, not a soldier, and yet he chose to dress in fatigues and to be surrounded by pretty ominous-looking men carrying automatic weapons and to use such language as saying he's prepared to die, he's ready for combat."
Steinberg believes Ramaphosa was being sent a message.
"For seven years, Ramaphosa has sat on his hands and done nothing about the crises within the police. He finally moved and tried to do something and this is a response. It's saying beware, I am armed."
Steinberg said Mkhwanazi's motives should be questioned and called for a cautious approach to the theatrics surrounding the allegations the general has made.

'The government of Botswana, the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime, the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services and Mr Hubona unconditionally retract their allegations and apologise to Mrs Motsepe for making them.' This public apology signals a clear departure from the previous administration's posture. Under President Duma Boko, elected earlier this year on a platform of legal reform and regional cooperation, Botswana has moved to restore credibility in its institutions and rebuild relationships in the Southern African Development Community. President Boko's administration described the saga as a failure of both process and ethics. 'The new human rights-based government of Botswana under the leadership of advocate Duma Boko reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law and assures the public that fabrications of the nature that have occurred will never recur,' the statement who is also the sister-in-law of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, has not yet issued a formal response, but sources close to her confirmed she is considering legal action for damages caused by the years of reputational harm. Political analysts suggest that the apology is not only a legal and diplomatic necessity but also a strategic move by Botswana to stabilise relations with its neighbour amid broader efforts to attract foreign investment and rebuild institutional trust. South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation welcomed the apology, noting that the matter had weighed heavily on bilateral relations in recent years. Weeks after the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner's explosive allegations, the wheels of justice began to turn. Controversial businessman and alleged mastermind Molefe, and suspected hitmen Michael Tau, Musa Kekana, and Tiego Mabusela are now facing murder charges. They have been linked to the assassinations of DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos and whistleblower Armand Swart. The alleged hitmen have also been charged with killing businessman Don Tindleni. An AK-47 and three pistols are the key pieces of evidence tying Molefe and the alleged hitmen to crimes. As investigations deepen, police say they are probing at least ten high-profile murder cases potentially linked to the same AK-47 rifle. They have not ruled out further arrests as they trace the syndicate's reach across Gauteng.
