NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb to resign

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb is expected to leave the job imminently.
The ABC understands she will resign after three years in the position.
Commissioner Webb became the first woman to hold the position in the state when she took over from Mick Fuller in 2022.
During her tenure she attracted criticism for her handling of the manslaughter of 95-year-old Clare Nowland by a police officer and her response to the deaths of Jesse Baird and Luke Davis, who were allegedly murdered by an off-duty officer.
Last year she initiated a review into police culture amid claims from former and serving officers of bullying and sexism in the ranks.
Commissioner Webb joined the force in 1987 and went on to work in Sydney and regional NSW in general duties and criminal investigation roles before being appointed commissioner.
There has been no mention of her future during Question Time in parliament.

Stephen Fleming pleads guilty to manslaughter of Annette Brennan whose body was dumped in a bin in Coolaroo

A man has pleaded guilty to killing a woman whose body was found in a rubbish tip in Melbourne's north last year. Stephen Fleming faced the Supreme Court of Victoria on Thursday morning, where he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 67-year-old Annette Brennan. Police said they believed Ms Brennan's body was dumped in a bin outside a property in Coolaroo, before it was discovered by staff at an Epping waste management facility on July 3, 2024. The pair were known to each other, police said last year. Ms Brennan, a teacher, was well-known within Melbourne's Indonesian community and was a member of the Brunswick Indonesian Uniting Church congregation. Fleming was originally charged with murder and pleaded not guilty in January 2025. Earlier this week, he faced a sentence indication hearing, where accused people are typically told what sentence they could receive if they plead guilty. The hearing took place in a closed court. Then on Thursday, the Supreme Court heard Fleming would be pleading guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Details of Fleming's offence were not aired in court, other than that the killing took place around July 1, 2024, two days before the body was found. Fleming, who was dressed in a grey prison jumper, was not required to speak at the hearing other than to tell the court that he would plead guilty to the manslaughter charge. The offence carries a maximum of 25 years' jail. Fleming will face a pre-sentence hearing before Justice Christopher Beale on September 29, where Ms Brennan's loved ones will be allowed to make victim impact statements.

Annette Brennan death: Stephen Fleming pleads guilty to manslaughter

A man charged after the body of an English teacher was discovered at a Melbourne tip has admitted he killed her. Stephen Fleming, 46, appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Thursday morning, where he pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge. Standing at the back of the court in a grey sweatsuit, Fleming had his arms crossed in front of him as it was put to him he killed Annette Brennan, 67, 'on or about' July 1, 2024. 'Guilty,' he said, blinking. Fleming was initially charged with murder in July last year just days after Ms Brennan's body was found at a recycling facility in Epping, in Melbourne's north. At the time police said it was believed she was killed at her home in Hilgay St, Coolaroo, before her body was placed in a kerbside bin. The grim discovery at the Repurpose It site was made by staff moving green waste inside a delivery shed on July 3. Fleming and Ms Brennan were believed to be known to each other, police said at the time. He was remanded into custody ahead of a pre-sentence hearing set down for September 29.

Matt Wright trial live: Pilot left paraplegic after chopper crash to be cross-examined

Cross-examination of the pilot who survived the fatal chopper crash at the centre of Matt Wright's trial will continue today in the Northern Territory Supreme Court. Sebastian Robinson — who was left a paraplegic after the helicopter accident — told jurors yesterday the celebrity crocodile wrangler visited him in hospital in the weeks after the crash and deleted notes and texts from Mr Robinson's phone. The court also heard Mr Wright was not on the fateful crocodile egg-collecting mission because he was an "anti-vaxxer", barred from entering remote Arnhem Land due to being unvaccinated against COVID-19. Mr Wright has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice following the accident on February 28, 2022. The charges relate to alleged events in the days, weeks and months after the crash. If you missed yesterday's live coverage of the trial, catch up here.
