'Trailblazer' Spending Review fund towns in the dark
Local authorities involved in regeneration schemes announced during the government's Spending Review say they are still waiting for information about what the projects might actually involve. On Wednesday, the government said 25 "trailblazing neighbourhoods" would each receive up to £20m over the next decade as part of "community-led" renewal efforts. These include Walker North in Newcastle, Barrow Central in Cumbria, Thorntree in Middlesbrough and Central Stockton and Portrack. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said the money would "boost growth" and "regenerate our communities".
The MHCLG said it "will support improvements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion".When asked how exactly the money would be spent to achieve this, or how it had chosen the locations to give the money to, the department did not comment. It is understood the money could be spent on various local projects such as youth clubs and councils should receive funding from April 2026. Newcastle City Council said it was still waiting for more information about the scheme. Westmorland and Furness Council said any additional money was "welcomed"."We are looking forward to finding out more about the trailblazer neighbourhoods plans for Barrow Central," a spokesperson said.Stockton Borough Council said that while it was still waiting for more information about the scheme, it believed the funds would support its ambition to accelerate plans to improve Stockton town centre. "We will now work with local partners and communities to develop exciting proposals for the trailblazer," a spokesperson said. Middlesbrough Council declined to comment.

She said: "The people have spoken and we have to thank Southport, the community for highlighting the plight of the pier and showing this is what we want," she said."Their voice was strong and it was heard. I'm elated, the whole town is elated."The grade-II listed structure, the second longest pier in the UK, shut three years ago after a structural survey found corroded steelwork and unstable decking. Sefton Council previously said it could not afford the £13m restoration costs. The chancellor's announcement of cash for the pier came during the government's recent Spending Review."We are so happy, this is the news we wanted, it is the best news for the town," Ms Silcock Langshaw, who owns community-run coffee shop The Old BakeHouse, said she hoped the re-opening of the pier would be a catalyst for wider regeneration in the said: "It's been a long time coming but we are really excited."The buzz is coming, it's slow but you can feel it."I think we need to start thinking positively because there's been a lot of delays but let's focus on what we are going to be doing in the future." Buckinghamshire villagers battle 'nightmare' housing plans
A proposed housing development on the edge of a village has been described as a "nightmare" and "just too big" by residents. Plans for Court Gate - which would see up to 90 new homes built to the north of Marsh Gibbon, near Bicester - were submitted to Buckinghamshire Council in March. Residents said they had welcomed smaller development, Deanfield View, completed in 2022, which included a new village shop, but called the current plans "not logical". Land promoter Catesby Estates said the area needed affordable homes and was a "sustainable location" for development. Parish councillor Mark Benzing said he was not opposed to the village's expansion in principle, but that it was about "proportion". "It's about 'how many [people] can we take, how many houses should be built'," he said. Resident Patrina Needham said the development was unrealistic, and that the village's infrastructure would struggle to cope. She added: "It's practically impossible to build it. The sewage cannot cope with the capacity.. It's just not logical."We understand the pressure that councils are under... [but] loss of village identity, loss of community... are still very important in our countryside." Sam Wicker, who has lived in the village for five years, said Marsh Gibbon was "like a little family". "We like the community spirit, we like that everybody is close-knit... we've got that country feel," she said. She said a development in 2022 had been a positive addition to the village, but the Court Gate proposals were continued: "So much is going to change. The roads cannot deal with even more houses... It's a nightmare to the extent that we would consider moving." In a statement, Catesby Estates said: "The rate of new housing development has not met the growing demand. "Between 2019/20 and 2023/24, new homes constructed in Buckinghamshire decreased by 53%, leading to a widening gap between housing supply and population said the plans delivered affordable housing, and Marsh Gibbon's size, location, and transport links made it a "sustainable" location for new homes."At the end of July 2024, there were 6,857 live applications on the housing register, Bucks Home Choice, an increase of 530 compared to March of the same year," it planning application is currently awaiting a decision by Buckinghamshire Council. Liverpool eyeing shock £100MILLION move for Newcastle star Anthony Gordon to take summer transfer spree to almost £300m
LIVERPOOL are weighing up a £100million move for Newcastle star Anthony Gordon. Talks were held last summer over an Anfield switch as Toon looked to bring in cash to satisfy Prem financial rules. 4 Eddie Howe's side are now in much better shape with the balance sheets but could have to fend off more interest from Merseyside for the Scouse winger. Boyhood Liverpool fan Gordon moved to St James' Park from Everton for £45m in January 2024 and even signed a new contract last October. He had six goals and five assists in the Prem last season and the Reds have committed to a summer spending spree to bolster Arne Slot's title-winning squad — already bringing in £29.5m Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. His old Bayer pal Florian Wirtz is set to be the next to follow in a British-record £116m deal, while left-back Milos Kerkez is also expected to arrive for £40m from Bournemouth. Paris Saint-Germain ace Bradley Barcola is a target but the European champions do not want to lose the Frenchman. That means that Liverpool could revive a move for Everton academy graduate Gordon, 24. It comes with uncertainty over the future of Reds forward Luis Diaz. The Colombian says he is happy at Anfield but revealed he could explore other opportunities this summer — with interest from LaLiga giants Barcelona. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Liverpool had expressed an interest in Gordon's Toon team-mate Alexander Isak — but were quoted a whopping £150m fee for the red-hot Swedish striker. And Newcastle could seek a loan move for Manchester City's out-of-favour England winger Jack Grealish should they lose Gordon to another club this summer.
