6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Turkey
Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey on Sunday, causing dozens of reports of damage and at least one collapsed building.
Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, known as AFAD, said in a statement that the earthquake hit around 7:53 p.m. local time near the Sındırgı district of the Balıkesir province.

Sındırgı is a small town of about 11,000 people, according to population data from the U.S. Geological Survey. In total, tens of thousands of people are expected to have been potentially impacted by the earthquakes.
So far, the earthquake has caused at least 20 aftershocks, with five of them reaching between 4.0 and 5.0 in magnitude.
Data from the USGS shows that the earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers. Probability data shows there is a 41% chance there could be between 10-100 estimated fatalities, with the potential for millions of dollars of economic losses. These are model-based estimates and real figures may differ.
"In Sındırgı district, 1 building has collapsed," AFAD said. "As a result of search and rescue operations, 4 people have been rescued alive from the debris, and efforts to rescue one person are ongoing."
The earthquake comes less than two years after devastating earthquakes killed more than 53,000 people in Turkey and another 6,000 people in Syria.

The man said he was initially planning to buy two crossword-themed scratch-offs, but he was pressed for time so he bought only the single Lucky 777 ticket. That ticket turned out to be a $50,000 winner. The man won a $10,000 prize earlier this year from a ticket he purchased from the same vending machine. The winner said he does not intend to stop buying tickets. "My expectations have not changed. I have no expectation of winning. At best, I'll break even," he said. The man said his winnings will help fund a trip to Disney World with his daughter and her family.

Watch: Texas chicken named world's oldest at the age of 14
Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A Texas woman's pet chicken was officially named the oldest in the world by Guinness World Records at the age of 14 years and 69 days old. Little Elm resident Sonya Hull said she hatched the chicken, Pearl, in her personal incubator on March 13, 2011. Guinness World Records confirmed Pearl's age on May 22, officially earning her the title of world's oldest living chicken. "She's defied all odds because most Easter-Egger Hens live an average of five to eight years," Hull told Guinness World Records. She said Pearl's mobility is limited now, so she spends most of her time in the family's laundry room. "She is welcome to come out into the living room, because she likes to watch TV when she hears it on," Hull said. Pearl is also fond of the family's elderly cat and new kitten. "She doesn't seem to mind the other animals, and the kitten will sometimes sit with her," Hull said. Hull said Pearl's egg production has slowed, but she laid one right after the family found out she was an official Guinness World Record-holder. The previous oldest chicken living, an Illinois pet named Peanut, died Dec. 25, 2023, at the age of 21 years and 238 days old.

Small plane crashes into aircraft while landing at Montana airport
Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A small plane landing at a Montana airport crashed into a second aircraft on the runaway, according to officials who said there were only minor injuries. The incident occurred at 2:08 p.m. MDT Monday at Kalispell City Airport, located in northwestern Montana, about 200 miles northwest of Helena. The Federal Aviation Administration explained in a statement that a Socata TBM 700 struck an unoccupied Swearingen SX-300 after landing. According to a statement from the Kalispell Police Department, the preliminary investigation indicates that the pilot lost control of the aircraft while attempting to land at the airport, resulting in the runway crash. "All four occupants of the aircraft, who were from out of state, reported only minor injuries and were treated at the scene," KPD said. "No additional injuries have been reported." The Kalispell Fire Department had been among the agencies that responded to the scene, as the plane crash seemingly resulted in a fire, which authorities said has since been contained. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
