Pet cat helps discover a new virus

Pepper the cat is at it again. After his hunting skills helped virologists identify the first jeilongvirus in the United States, the virus-hunting feline has detected a new strain orthoreovirus.
It helps that Pepper's owner is John Lednicky, a virologist at the University of Florida College of Public Health. Pepper caught an Everglades short-tailed shrew and Lednicky took the small mole-lake mammal into the lab for testing. Lednicky's research includes studying the mule deerpox virus, so he wanted to look at the shrew specimen for any clues to how this virus is transmitted among mammals.
It turns out that the shrew had a strain of orthoreovirus. The viruses in this genus infect several mammal species, including white-tailed deer, bats, and humans. Their effects on humans are not very well understood, but there are rare reports that orthoreoviruses may be associated with cases of encephalitis, meningitis, and gastroenteritis in children.
'The bottom line is we need to pay attention to orthoreoviruses, and know how to rapidly detect them,' Lednicky said in a statement.

'There are many different mammalian orthoreoviruses and not enough is known about this recently identified virus to be concerned,' study co-author and UF Ph.D. candidate Emily DeRuyter added. 'Mammalian orthoreoviruses were originally considered to be 'orphan' viruses, present in mammals including humans, but not associated with diseases. More recently, they have been implicated in respiratory, central nervous system and gastrointestinal diseases.'
The complete genomic coding sequences for this new virus, officially named 'Gainesville shrew mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 strain UF-1,' was recently published in the journal Microbiology Resource Announcements.
Importantly, Pepper has shown no signs of illness, according to Lednicky.
'This was an opportunistic study,' Lednicky said. 'If you come across a dead animal, why not test it instead of just burying it? There is a lot of information that can be gained.'
In 2024, Pepper helped detect the first jeilongvirus in the US. He dropped a dead mouse on the carpet at Lednicky's feet, which was also taken into the lab for testing. Jeilongvirus was previously found in Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe. Unlike orthoreoviruses, it is known to infect more than just mammals, and can make reptiles, fish, and birds sick. It can also occasionally cause serious illness in humans.
The virus in the mouse that Pepper found was genetically different from other jeilongviruses and is designated as 'Gainesville rodent jeilong virus 1.' According to Lednicky, it grows equally well in rodent, human, and nonhuman primate cells, 'making it a great candidate for a spillover event,' or when one virus spills from one species into another.
The team also recently found two novel viruses in farmed white-tailed deer. Since viruses are constantly evolving and lab techniques have gotten more sophisticated, Lednicky said finding new viruses isn't entirely surprising.
'I'm not the first one to say this, but essentially, if you look, you'll find, and that's why we keep finding all these new viruses,' Lednicky said.

Two different types of orthoreovirus can infect a host cell, similar to influenza. This two-pronged infection essentially creates a new virus by mixing and matching the genes, according to Lednicky.
In 2019, this same team isolated the first orthoreovirus found in a deer. That first strain's genes were nearly identical to an orthoreovirus detected in farmed mink in China and a very sick lion in Japan. Scientists were incredibly puzzled how the same hybrid virus could pop up in farmed deer in Florida and two carnivore species thousands of miles away. Some speculated that components of the animals' feed may have come from the same manufacturer.
More research is needed to fully understand how orthoreoviruses move around and are transmitted, their prevalence in humans, and how sick they could make people. Future serology and immunology studies could help the team better understand the threat of orthoreoviruses including the one a black cat helped scientists find.

Parents in the United States who want to vaccinate their young children against Covid-19 may face a growing set of challenges this fall. The US Food and Drug Administration might not renew authorization for Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 5, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told state and local health officials on Friday. 'This decision would affect Pfizer's pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6m–4y for the 2025–2026 season,' the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said in an email that was obtained by CNN. In May, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the CDC would no longer recommend Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children or pregnant women. The CDC's immunization schedule was updated to reflect that children would be able to get the vaccines after consulting with a health care provider — what's known as 'shared decision-making.' But without FDA authorization, Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine would no longer be available to any children younger than 5 and the other option available for healthy children with no underlying conditions in this age group, Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, would have to be given 'off label' by a willing pharmacist or physician. This contradicts the intent of shared clinical decision-making, said Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. 'Shared clinical decision-making assumes that you're making a decision for that child whether they're healthy or not healthy. So now it's confusing,' he said. Covid-19 vaccines first became available to the American public during the pandemic under emergency use authorization, known as EUA — special permissions used by the FDA during an emergency that are short of full approval. Pfizer has had full FDA approval for its Covid-19 vaccine for individuals age 12 and older since 2022. The company anticipates that this approval will expand to children ages 5 to 11 for the upcoming respiratory virus season, according to the email that the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases sent to state and local health officials on Friday. But vaccine access for the youngest children, who are most vulnerable to severe illness from a Covid-19 infection, would be significantly more limited if the FDA does not renew emergency authorization for the Pfizer vaccine for children under 5. Pfizer confirmed to CNN that the FDA has said that it may not renew the emergency use authorization or the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years. 'We are currently in discussions with the agency on potential paths forward and have requested that the EUA for this age group remain in place for the 2025-2026 season,' Pfizer said in a statement. 'It is important to note that these deliberations are not related to the safety and efficacy of the vaccine which continues to demonstrate a favorable profile.' Fatima Khan, co-founder of the nonprofit grassroots group Protect Their Future, which advocates for vaccine access for kids, told CNN in a statement, that 'taking a proven, safe and effective vaccine away from vulnerable children is unconscionable.' 'The science is clear: Infants face Covid-19 hospitalization rates comparable to those over 65. Refusing to authorize it for children under 5 doesn't protect them–it abandons them,' she said. 'Parents have already struggled to safeguard their youngest because of limited vaccine access. Now that protection may disappear entirely this fall just as schools reopen. If this stands, it will be a lasting stain on our public health system and on every leader who left our children behind.' Moderna also has a Covid-19 vaccine available for children age 11 and younger. It was granted full approval by the FDA in July but only for those who are at 'increased risk for COVID-19 disease.' Moderna plans to increase vaccine supply for children to 'help mitigate any potential supply gap,' according to the CDC email sent on Friday, but Moderna is still determining the specific volume and timing. Like flu vaccines, Covid-19 vaccines have typically been updated with formulations that best target the virus strains that are in circulation each season. But the FDA has not yet approved the formulation for the 2025-2026 season. 'I think the bottom line is that children are going to be less likely to get this vaccine, which goes against the data,' Offit said. At a meeting in April, the CDC's vaccine advisory committee heard evidence that children accounted for about 4% of all Covid-19 hospitalizations over last fall and winter's respiratory virus season. Rates of Covid-19 hospitalizations among children are highest for the youngest age groups, CDC data shows. Last respiratory virus season, there were 48 Covid-19 hospitalizations for every 100,000 children under 5 – nearly seven times the rate for older children and more than twice the rate for adults under 50. 'It's a war on mRNA vaccines. Why? Because mRNA vaccines are now political,' Offit said. 'It's just a war against the science, war against the data, and we will suffer this. And the thing that I fear the most is: Will we know we're suffering this? Will we have the surveillance capacity to know who's getting hospitalized with Covid, who's dying from Covid?' Covid-19 levels are on the rise in the US, with transmission increasing in at least 45 states, according to the CDC. In a statement to CNN, the US Department of Health and Human Services said that the agency does not comment on potential regulatory changes. 'The COVID-19 pandemic ended with the expiration of the federal public health emergency in May 2023,' spokesperson Andrew Nixon said in an email. Infections are rare, but a person can get sick by swimming in the ocean with an open wound or by eating contaminated raw shellfish. Health officials in several states are alerting residents about a flesh-eating bacteria that thrives in warm coastal waters. Approximately 60 cases of Vibrio vulnificus have been confirmed in 11 states, according to Today. The highest numbers have been in Louisiana (17 cases, including 4 deaths) and Florida (16 cases, including 5 deaths). North Carolina has also seen 7 cases, Yahoo News confirmed with the state's Department of Health and Human Services via email. Vibrio vulnificus cases are considered rare, with between 150 and 200 infections reported in the U.S. each year, according to the Cleveland Clinic. However, many people with an infection can become seriously ill, requiring intensive care or limb amputation. 'About 1 in 5 people with this infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill,' according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Does this mean you should avoid the ocean altogether? Here's what to know and what safety measures to keep in mind: What is Vibrio vulnificus? Vibrio are a type of bacteria that thrive in warm coastal waters during the summer months from May to October. This includes salt water and brackish water, which is a mixture of salt and freshwater often found where rivers meet the ocean. The bacteria are found particularly along the Gulf Coast states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi. There are different kinds of Vibrio that can lead to various infections. Vibrio vulnificus can be particularly dangerous because it can cause severe and life-threatening infections. This specific type of bacteria is known as 'flesh-eating' because it can destroy muscle tissue and skin. 'Many people with [Vibrio] vulnificus wound infection require intensive care or surgical tissue removal,' the CDC says. How do people get infected? There are two ways that people can get infected: When a person's open wound is exposed to ocean water or seafood contaminated with Vibrio bacteria. A small cut, scrape or wound from a recent surgery, piercing or tattoo can allow bacteria in. This can happen when a person goes swimming or fishing or prepares raw seafood. When someone eats raw or undercooked seafood or ingests contaminated water while swimming. Oysters, in particular, can concentrate the Vibrio bacteria inside them. What are the symptoms of a Vibrio infection? These are the common signs and symptoms of a Vibrio infection, according to the CDC: Watery diarrhea Stomach cramps Nausea and vomiting Fever/chills Signs of a Vibrio bloodstream infection: Fever/chills Dangerously low blood pressure Blistering skin lesions Signs of a Vibrio wound infection: Fever Pain, redness, swelling, warmth at the wound site Redness Pain Swelling Warmth Discoloration (turning a color other than normal) Discharge (leaking fluids) The Cleveland Clinic and the CDC advise people to go to the emergency room immediately if there are signs of a suspected Vibrio vulnificus infection. Are some people more at risk of an infection? Anyone can become infected with the bacteria through a wound. People with underlying health conditions like liver disease, diabetes and immunocompromising conditions are at higher risk for wound infection, according to the CDC. How can people stay safe? Florida's Health Department and the CDC provide some tips to prevent Vibrio vulnificus infections: Don't eat raw oysters and other raw shellfish. Instead, cook them thoroughly. Avoid cross contamination with raw seafood and other cooked food or shellfish. If you have an open wound or broken skin, avoid warm salt or brackish water, if possible. Cover your wound with a waterproof bandage if it could come into contact with coastal water, raw seafood or its drippings or juices. Wear protective gloves or clothing when handling raw shellfish. Be vigilant after coastal floods, hurricanes and storm surges. Coastal waters forced into inland areas increase the risk for Vibrio wound infections, particularly for people who are older or who have underlying health conditions.
