KUCHING (Aug 7): The 22nd edition of Pesta Benak is set to take place from Sept 19 to 21 at the Sri Aman Waterfront in Simanggang.
Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar shared the announcement in a Facebook post, saying he was informed of the festival dates during a courtesy visit by the Pesta Benak organising committee at the Astana Negeri yesterday.
He also revealed that he and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, have been officially invited to officiate the festival's closing ceremony on Sept 21.
The delegation, led by State Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and Simanggang assemblyman, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, also briefed Wan Junaidi and Fauziah on this year's theme: 'Explore the Uniqueness and Challenges of the Benak Phenomenon in Batang Lupar, Sri Aman.'
Wan Junaidi said the three-day festival aims to continue celebrating the iconic tidal bore phenomenon while stimulating the local economy through broad community and industry participation.
'We also expressed our hope that Pesta Benak will be further developed into an internationally recognised annual event, in line with the state government's aspiration to make Sri Aman a major tourism destination,' he said.
During the meeting, Wan Junaidi also proposed the establishment of a training centre in Sri Aman.
The facility could serve as both an agricultural products exhibition space and a hub for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
He said the centre would provide a platform for local communities to promote and sell their produce, while also equipping school leavers, particularly those who did not complete Form 3 or Form 5, with marketable technical skills.
'This would enable them to gain recognised skills certificates and better job opportunities,' he added.
Among those present were Sri Aman Resident Mahra Salleh, Sri Aman District Officer Shariff Bujang, Sri Aman District Council Secretary Mohd Rizal Zakaria, and other local officials. Pesta Benak Sri Aman Wan Junaidi

SD Guthrie posts earnings jump in 1H to RM1.07bil

SD Guthrie group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha KUALA LUMPUR: The crude palm oil (CPO) price is expected to remain volatile in the second half of the year amid the ongoing volatility of the global economic and operating environment, said SD Guthrie Bhd in its outlook for the remainder of the year The group, formerly known as Sime Darby Plantations, said the industry is entering its peak output cycle, supported by improved weather conditions, softer biodiesel demand amidst the low crude oil price environment, and the ongoing global macroeconomic uncertainty. "Whilst the price discount of palm oil relative to other vegetable oils is likely to support stronger demand from key markets, persistent macroeconomic headwinds, coupled with uncertainties in the global trade environment following the US' revised tariff measures, are adding further volatility to the overall operating environment," it said in a statement. The group anticipates its fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production to improve in the second half of the year, supported by better operating conditions as well as productivity enhancement efforts across our operations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. In the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, SD Guthrie posted a net profit of RM505mil, up from RM415mil in the year-ago quarter, which translates to a higher earnings per share of 7.3 sen against six sen previously. The group reported revenue of RM5.17bil compared to RM4.97bil in 2QFY24. Over the six-month period, net profit came to RM1.07bil against RM626mil in 1HFY24, while revenue rose to RM9.99bil from RM9.31bil in the year-ago period. 'The group's performance in this period bears testament to our robust strategy and disciplined execution, as we continue to prioritise operational excellence. Even as our core business segments regain momentum, the new and expanded strategic focus to pursue broader growth initiatives is starting to take shape," said group managing director Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha. The group declared an interim dividend of 7.75 sen per share, with ex-date on Oct 16, 2025, and payable on Oct 31, 2025. SD Guthrie noted an impressive performance its upstream segment in 1H25, as it benefited from higher year-on-year average realised CPO and palm kernel (PK) prices - up 3% and 50% y-o-y to RM4,146 and RM3,247 per tonne respectively. The group's fresh fruit bunch (FFB) production was higher across segments for a 4% increase overall. However, SD Guthrie's downstream segment registered a 44% y-o-y slump in pre-tax profit in 2QFY25 to RM126mil amid a challenging business landscape. The group said operations across Asia Pacific and Europe were impacted by lower demand and tighter margins. However, encouraging performance was achieved in Oceania which recorded commendable operating profits with higher sales volumes and margins.

Anwar: Malaysia to continue mediating Cambodia-Thailand talks

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will continue playing a key role in facilitating peace and coordination between Cambodia and Thailand amid ongoing border tensions, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking to reporters after the Budget 2026 consultation session here, today, Anwar said both countries' defence ministers met with him earlier and expressed their commitment to uphold a ceasefire agreement. 'Alhamdulillah, they want Malaysia to continue coordinating. 'Both sides have given their commitment to observe the terms and maintain the ceasefire,' he said. Anwar added that while minor issues still persist, they can be resolved amicably. Asean defence attachés are expected to be involved, but a full-scale Asean intervention is not required at this stage. 'This remains a bilateral matter between Cambodia and Thailand, with Malaysia helping to coordinate. 'China and the US have offered logistical assistance, but they are not directly involved in border monitoring,' he said. When asked why both countries were able to reach an initial agreement, Anwar said the ceasefire alone marked meaningful progress. 'These border disputes go back hundreds of years. What's important is that differing views don't necessarily lead to tension. 'As a maritime nation, Malaysia too has had disagreements with its neighbours, but that has never stopped us from maintaining close and friendly ties,' he said. On Tuesday, Anwar said talks to resolve the border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia are expected to conclude by Thursday. The two countries had previously agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire during a special meeting in Putrajaya on July 28, which was chaired by Anwar himself.

PM Anwar: Too soon to say if students should finish school at 16 to join workforce earlier

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said it is too early to decide whether students should complete secondary school by the age of 16 to enable them to enter the workforce by 21. He said the matter still requires thorough discussion before any decision can be made. 'We'll discuss that. It's too early,' he told reporters briefly after attending the Budget Engagement Session at the Finance Ministry's headquarters here. On Monday, former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli suggested in the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia should consider allowing students to complete secondary school by 16, enabling them to enter the workforce by 21. He said the policy shift was worth considering as the country moves towards becoming an ageing nation, stressing the need for a younger workforce to begin contributing to the economy earlier.
