Every player has a problem: Chelsea's weak position could be exposed this weekend
Wesley Fofana
A fit Fofana tops this list for sure – but a fit Fofana is not something we've really seen at Chelsea. If a player – especially a centre-back – can't play regularly, is it actually a good idea to count on them?
From what we've heard, Fofana should be OK to face Crystal Palace this weekend despite not having been ready for the friendlies we just played. However we can't see him being thrown in to action like that after 9 months where he's played just a handful of minutes.
Trevoh Chalobah
Chalobah returned from loan in January and once again proved his worth as a quality defender.
The ankle injury he picked up against Milan is worrying, but if he recovers from that we're sure he will play on Sunday.
Tosin Adarabioyo
Tosin is always going to be a solid squad player and an important dressing room presence, but we wouldn't want to have to play him every week.
We weren't very impressed by him in the friendly against AC Milan either.
Still, he's almost always going to give you a solid 7/10 performance, and given that he's surely the most likely to start alongside Chalobah (if fit) this weekend.

A player with perhaps more upside than Tosin or Chalobah, but a lower floor. He has struggled to stay fit and has had some bad games. Has yet to really put together a long run of good games, and so just can't be fully trusted.
Aaron Anselmino
Anselmino looks like he will be loaned out, it's just a question of timing.
He's been kept around to help out with these friendly games – and did indeed feature against Leverkusen, but now they're done we expect him to be loaned out if Chalobah and Badiashile are ready to be in the squad this weekend.

Brentford's Torpey set for Man Utd academy role
Brentford are set for another high profile departure with academy director Stephen Torpey lined up as Manchester United's new head of academy. Current academy chief Nick Cox is leaving United after agreeing to become Everton's technical director. Torpey is well known to United technical director Jason Wilcox as the pair worked together at Manchester City. Wilcox is understood to have driven the recruitment process. Cox is currently continuing in his role at Old Trafford and it is not known precisely when Torpey will be able to take the job. It will be another exit in a summer of departures at Brentford. United signed striker Bryan Mbeumo from the Bees for £65m last month, manager Thomas Frank left for Tottenham and skipper Christian Norgaard moved to Arsenal in a £15m deal. Forward Yoane Wissa is also in dispute with the club as he looks to complete a move to Newcastle.

Richard Hughes' genius on display in £100m Liverpool masterclass
Richard Hughes has been given his flowers by a lot of Liverpool fans this summer for his work as the club's sporting director, making the big calls and securing well-negotiated deals for the Reds. There are countless examples of his genius, be it the amount he secured for Jarell Quansah alongside a buy-back clause, the sell-on clause he got for Tyler Morton, the arrangement for Florian Wirtz's record-breaking transfer, the £65m Luis Diaz deal or the £25m move for Ben Doak, again with a buy-back clause. He's been rampant all summer and his ruthless style has been Box Office. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! But the over-arching project he's been overseeing is by far his greatest achievement, simply getting everything over the line that Arne Slot has wanted him to. The sheer amount of transfers has been mind-boggling and he - alongside the rest of the recruitment team - deserves a hell of a lot of credit. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range It's now been made clear just how well Hughes has done and the £100m arrangement he's agreed throughout the summer is nothing short of staggering when you look at it in the right context. Hughes' genius transfer window According to The Athletic's latest deal sheet, the Reds have pulled off an extraordinary feat. In their report, it said: "Two summers ago, Chelsea spent nearly £400m on new players, accounting for 16 per cent of the division's total. Liverpool are not quite at that mark, though their current 13 per cent share will increase if they sign [Alexander] Isak. "Liverpool's impressive sales this summer mean that their net spend is around £100m, significantly less than Manchester United and Arsenal, and around the same as Sunderland, Manchester City, Newcastle and Spurs. There's been plenty of intra-Premier League trading too, but even with Bournemouth recouping a net £111m, the division's total net spend sits beyond £1bn." Of course, the £100m net spend is not just one deal, but the collaboration of a number of deals, but for the amount of quality Liverpool have signed to cost such a reasonable amount is remarkable. Isak's potential arrival, alongside an approach for Marc Guehi would inevitable cause a significant change to the figure we're quoting right now, but with Harvey Elliott and others still to be moved on, the Reds are unlikely to see their net spend break £200m which makes this summer a huge success. Three goalkeepers, two full-backs, a centre-back (potentially two), two strikers and a midfielder have all made their way through the door, bolstering the academy and upgrading Arne Slot's squad. A few teething issues still remain with the team in terms of tactical understanding and depth, but when everything is all said and done, you can't help but feel in awe of what Hughes has created. Liverpool are primed to deliver a really solid run at defending the title and that's a real achievement.

Jamie Carragher gives Liverpool fans glimpse into future with Viktor Gyokeres claim
Jamie Carragher has boldly suggested that Mikel Arteta won't be deploying new signing Viktor Gyokeres in Arsenal's most significant matches this season. That would include Arsenal's Premier League title clashes with Liverpool. The first of those games will take place at Anfield on Sunday, August 31. Liverpool's trip to the Emirates this season is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 7. Carragher's statement left fellow pundit Gary Neville surprised, as he held a completely different opinion. Gyokeres was in the starting eleven for Arsenal's season opener against Manchester United, but was substituted after an hour following a performance deemed "clumsy." Reflecting on the impressive record Arteta's team has amassed against their high-profile rivals - Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham - Carragher hinted that Gyokeres might not feature against such teams, given Arsenal's 22-match unbeaten streak against them. Carragher is confident that Gyokeres will have no problem scoring goals throughout the season, but believes Kai Havertz is too important to leave out. "If I'm being honest, I think they go back to Havertz in the biggest games, I think that will be the case," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "I can see Gyokeres playing and scoring goals." Neville countered: "He can't leave Gyokeres out of big games." But Carragher stood his ground, adding: "He can. I think Havertz is too important a player for Mikel Arteta to be left out. I don't see that happening at all." Neville proposed that the two stars could form a powerful partnership on the field. "Arsenal needed a center forward and brought one in, I saw glimpses that made me think he'll be a handful," he commented. "[Gabriel] Martinelli looks like he's struggling, maybe getting Gyokeres and Havertz in together is something he has to try." After Arsenal's triumph over United, Arteta admitted there was still work to be done to fully integrate Gyokeres into his team but was satisfied with his initial performance. "Well, he did a lot of things very good," the Spaniard remarked. "You can tell, especially in our high-pressing rhythm that we demand that, especially in the first hour. Again, he took too much time. It's something that we have to work on him, especially there. "And then, yeah, finalizing situation, he didn't have that many chances to do that because, as I said, on the previous action, before we had to play that last ball that the line was standing still with 40 metres behind. "We then managed to put the ball through to exploit his quality. But overall, I mean, coming away to Manchester United, winning your first game with Arsenal, it's a good start."
