
AirAsia plans Hong Kong connectivity expansion and potential stock market listing
The airline's owner, Capital A Berhad, announced in May that a potential secondary listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange was part of its strategy to broaden access to global capital markets.
It said the move followed a meeting with Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, in which Capital A was invited to explore the possibility of listing in the city to access deeper pools of global and mainland Chinese investors.
The firm said discussions were ongoing and it was close to appointing an international investment bank to advise on the proposed listing structure and timeline.
Amanda Woo, group chief commercial officer of AirAsia, told the Post that the carrier was looking to expand its network in Hong Kong because it served as an important strategic transit hub.
'Hong Kong complements AirAsia's strategy to build a more connected and accessible network across Asia … We see strong potential in the Hong Kong market,' she said.
'Apart from being a strong point of sale market, it is also a strategic transit hub – enabling, for example, our fifth freedom route between Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Okinawa which has been well received since its launch.'

SoftBank selects banks for US IPO of payments app PayPay amid tech rebound, sources say
SoftBank Group has selected investment banks to help organise a potential initial public offering (IPO) in the US for its Japanese payments app operator PayPay, according to two people familiar with the matter. The banks leading preparations for the listing were Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Mizuho Financial Group and Morgan Stanley, the sources said. The PayPay offering may raise more than US$2 billion from investors when it takes place, which the sources said could be as soon as the final quarter of this year. The sources declined to be named as the information was not public and cautioned that factors including timing and the amount the IPO could raise are subject to market conditions. SoftBank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Mizuho and Morgan Stanley declined to comment. PayPay played a role in encouraging Japanese consumers to move away from a long-standing preference for cash by offering rebates on payments through its mobile app.

Hong Kong stocks dip before US-China tariff deadline and Alibaba, Tencent results
Hong Kong stocks kicked off trading on a cautious note on Monday ahead of a deadline for a US-China tariff pause and earnings from China's biggest technology companies. Advertisement The Hang Seng Index fell 0.1 per cent to 24,808.64 as of 10.10am local time. The Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 0.5 per cent. On the mainland, the CSI 300 Index climbed 0.2 per cent and the Shanghai Composite Index added 0.1 per cent. SMIC slumped 3 per cent to HK$47.14 and Group lost 2.9 per cent to HK$467.80. Xinyi Solar Holdings rallied 4.8 per cent to HK$3.33 and BYD Electronic International jumped 4.6 per cent to HK$38.12. Alibaba Group Holding added 0.9 per cent to HK$117.30. The 90-day tariff ceasefire between Beijing and Washington expires on Tuesday following a third round of talks in Stockholm last month. UBS' wealth management unit said last week that the tariff on Chinese exports to the US may eventually range between 30 and 40 per cent. Corporate earnings will also be in focus. Some of the biggest constituents in the Hang Seng Index are due to disclose interim reports this week, with Tencent Holdings on Wednesday and Alibaba on Friday. Hong Kong ultra-luxury homes: mainland Chinese buyers drive US$3 billion buying spree
Hong Kong's super luxury property market has seen 35 transactions worth about HK$23 billion (US$2.93 billion) in the past 19 months, with ownership shifting from local property-industry tycoons to mainland buyers who have made their fortunes in hot industries, according to Savills. Wealthy buyers from mainland China accounted for 80 per cent of the deals worth HK$300 million or more – 24 in 2024 and nine in the first seven months of this year, said Thomas See, the property consultancy's director and head of residential sales. 'They came from emerging industries in mainland China,' such as AI, fintech and gaming, or industries that grew in profitability during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, like healthcare and logistics, he said. Twenty-four of the super-prime properties were located on Hong Kong Island, from The Peak to Jardine's Lookout and the Southside, while 11 were in Kowloon's Kai Tak and Kowloon Tong areas. In April, the wife of the co-founder of Chinese selfie app Meitu bought a HK$465.8 million home in the upscale Jardine's Lookout neighbourhood. Wang Baoshan, who closed the deal for the 5,466 sq ft detached house at 8 Perkins Road, is the spouse of Meitu co-founder Mike Cai Wensheng, according to the company's annual report. The price was 22 per cent below the asking price of HK$600 million, according to an agent who mainly deals in luxury homes. The Meitu executive recently had a net worth of about US$1.1 billion, according to Forbes.
