Legendary Jazz coach/GM Frank Layden dies at 93
Layden coached the Jazz for seven-plus seasons (1981-89) and also served in the front office as general manager and president until retiring in the final week of 1999. He was NBA Coach of the Year and NBA Executive of the Year in 1984.
Layden laid the foundation for success for Utah by drafting point guard John Stockton 16th in the 1984 draft and power forward Karl Malone 13th in the 1985 draft. Both players enjoyed Hall of Fame careers and the Jazz put together a streak of 20 straight playoff appearances, reaching the NBA Finals in both 1997 and 1998.
"We are sad to hear the news of Frank Layden's passing," said the Miller family, owners of the Jazz. "Frank was not only a foundational part of the Utah Jazz, he was a pillar in our community. We will continue to celebrate his passion and energy that helped build the Jazz into a contending team, and his endearing sense of humor.
"Frank's love of sports was contagious. He could often be found spending a night at the ballpark with the Salt Lake Bees, leading us in song during the 7th inning stretch. He was a dear friend and remarkable partner. We share our love with Barbara, Scott and the extended Layden family."
Layden was hired as GM of the New Orleans Jazz in 1979 and stuck with the franchise during its move to Utah. He compiled a 277-294 coaching record and guided the Jazz to five straight postseason appearances.
When he resigned as coach early in the 1988-89 season, Layden promoted Jerry Sloan, who went on to win 1,127 games with Utah.
Layden also had a short stint with the Utah Starzz of the WNBA. He resigned four games into the 1999 season, his second at the helm.
Among his other stops was coach of Niagara from 1968-76. Future NBA star Calvin Murphy led the school to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in Layden's second season. Layden went 119-97 at Niagara.
In 2019, Layden was that year's winner of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tyrese Haliburton returns to college, proposes to girlfriend on basketball court
Indiana Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton proposed to his girlfriend, Jade Jones, at center court of Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State where both attended college. On one knee next to hundreds or rose petals and a large lighted sign that read 'WILL YOU MARRY ME?' Haliburton had an engagement ring. She said yes. 'The place where our story started, and where our next chapter begins❤️💍,' Haliburton wrote on Instagram. Haliburton was also wearing a walking boot to help recover from a torn Achilles tendon sustained in the NBA Finals against Oklahoma City last month and a knee walker was next to Haliburton to help him keep weight off that leg. Haliburton and Jones met at Iowa State – he played for the men's basketball team and she was a cheerleader – and have been dating since college. Haliburton played two seasons at Iowa State and was the No. 12 pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2020 NBA Draft. The Kings traded Haliburton to Indiana in 2022, and he helped the Pacers reach the Finals this season. He won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and made the All-NBA team the past two seasons.

Tyrese Haliburton didn't let a torn Achilles prevent an epic engagement photo
Tyrese Haliburton knows he has a long road ahead to returning to basketball after suffering a torn Achilles in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. But he'll head into that recovery with the support of his fiancée. The Pacers star and longtime girlfriend Jade Jones announced their engagement on Monday, and Haliburton traced his proposal back to where they met at Iowa State. In a photo on the court of Hilton Coliseum, Haliburton dropped to a knee in front of a huge "Will you marry me" sign. We could see as Haliburton was wearing a walking boot and got off a knee scooter to pop the question. Seriously, a roller scooter has never looked cooler. Congrats to them both.

Oklahoma Sooners pitcher transferring to LSU Tigers
Former Oklahoma Sooner softball pitcher Peytn Monticelli announced she was committing to the LSU Tigers on Monday. Monticelli arrived in Norman following the 2023 season and spent two years with the Sooners, helping Oklahoma win its fourth-straight title in 2024. Monticelli appeared in 34 games over two seasons and held a 2-0 record in her time with Oklahoma. After posting a 1.09 ERA across 19.1 innings in 2024, the former Wisconsin Badger had a down year in 2025. She had a 3.94 ERA in 21.1 innings this season and threw just one inning in the NCAA Tournament. She'll join an LSU Tigers squad that lost pitcher Sydney Berzon to Oklahoma via the transfer portal. In addition to Berzon, the Oklahoma Sooners will also welcome the No. 1 pitcher in the 2025 recruiting class, Alyssa Parker, as well as the No. 5 pitcher in the cycle, Berkley Zache. Senior Kierston Deal and sophomore Audrey Lowry will be back for 2026 as will redshirt freshman Sophia Bordi, who took some time away from the team toward the end of the season, but will be back with the team this fall. Monticelli joins an LSU squad that finished ninth in the SEC in 2025. She provides the Tigers with a veteran arm out of the bullpen and brings heat to the circle. She released a statement on social media thanking Sooner Nation for the memories. Monticelli said, "Thank you, Sooner Nation, for supporting me these past two years. This was not an easy decision to make. I have loved everything about being a Sooner and am so grateful for every single person I have met along my journey with this program. Norman will always be a special place to me." Contact/Follow us @SoonersWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Oklahoma news, notes, and opinions.
