NEW YORK — I was hoodwinked, bamboozled and led astray by the New York Yankees' marketing team.
Have you ever watched a food commercial and immediately thought, 'Wow. I need to go to this restaurant as soon as possible and order this?' That's exactly what happened when Yankees catcher Austin Wells reviewed three different breakfast burritos on X — with the highest-rated one to be sold at Yankee Stadium day games. The winner featured a flour tortilla, scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, maple city fries, cheddar jack cheese and a side of chipotle aioli.

This season, on his Instagram page, Wells has been reviewing the breakfast burritos of all the MLB ballparks the Yankees visit, so the team smartly leaned into a clever marketing opportunity with one of their young, homegrown players.
I'm not a food expert, but I may have the most stories on The Athletic related to food. I've reviewed everything from an iconic Atlanta strip club's chicken wings to Yankee Stadium's newest concession items. The burritos Wells reviewed looked spectacular and filling. The burrito that the Yankees are calling 'The Wells Favvurito,' which I ordered before the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Rays on Saturday, was the opposite.
I reached out to the owner of Electric Burrito, Alex Thaboua, who grew up in San Diego and now runs the East Village spot that specializes in Southern California-style burritos, to ask what makes a good breakfast burrito.
'It is the crispy fries, the mushy beans, fried eggs — not fluffy eggs,' Thaboua said. 'You need a little acid in there from salsa or maybe a little lime juice. It's basic cooking rules. You add different textures. You need a good tortilla. That's a big part of it. That tortilla can't be too doughy. That's usually the biggest component, that and scrambled eggs is where people screw up breakfast burritos. It's too much fluff. It's like a McDonald's breakfast that cost like 50 cents back in the day.'

The Wells Favvurito is $12.28, which would not be exorbitant for stadium food, except it's tiny and not remotely close to being filling. Cut into the burrito, and you'll be searching for all of the breakfast sausage that was visible in Wells' camera-ready version. In the burrito I ordered, there may have been a total of five cut-up pieces of sausage that entirely lacked seasoning. The eggs mirrored those powdered ones you'd find at a Fairfield Inn continental breakfast. The potatoes were interesting in that they clearly had a maple syrup taste to them, but they were not crispy. The tortilla was the biggest crime of the burrito. It tasted as if it came straight out of the plastic wrapper.

Perhaps the sausage, eggs and potatoes could have been masked better by a better tortilla, but alas. What made up for the blandness of the burrito was the side of chipotle aioli. The burrito could be saved if the stadium lathers the chipotle sauce inside the burrito, but a good burrito should not require a dipping sauce that turns into the highlight of the meal.
The burrito is not worth the price, considering you'll be hungry about 10 minutes later, and I'm only speaking from experience here. Yankee Stadium has several good concession options, but this was a miss. YES Network's Jeff Nelson also tried the burrito and gave it a less-than-inspiring review.
'I'm glad it wasn't a 'flavvurito,' because it didn't have a whole lot of it,' Nelson said during Saturday's game broadcast.
I showed Wells, who homered in the defeat, the picture of my burrito after the game and he agreed that it, 'looks nothing like my burrito.' He said he'll have to put a word in with the higher-ups. Let's hope, because for now, his name is attached to a mediocre burrito.
* Baseball loves its 'plus' stats, so in my past rankings, we've used the Yankee Stadium Concessions+ metric, or YSC+, where the average rating is 100 just as it is for wRC+ or OPS+. For example, a 125 YSC+ is 25 percent better than your average concession stand item.

MSNBC Host Cracks Up Over Trump Email About Parade: 'Sorry, That's A Funny Sentence'

MSNBC host Chris Hayes couldn't contain his laughter on air Friday while reading a fundraising email from President Donald Trump. The email asked for donations for his Saturday military parade, which, as it turns out, most Americans aren't that eager to fund. 'Donald Trump is holding a North Korean-style military parade, Soviet-style military parade through the nation's capital, something that we just don't do as a country,' said Hayes. 'The last one we did was after the first Persian Gulf War, which was celebrating the end of a war.' He continued, 'We don't have that here. It just so happens to fall on his 79th birthday. He's even fundraising from it, if you could believe it — well, you can, of course — sending out this email with the subject line, quote, 'Please help me before my military parade!'' Hayes broke into laughter reading that last line aloud, as a screenshot of the email was displayed onscreen. He quickly composed himself and continued his coverage on the impending Washington, D.C., event. 'I'm sorry, that's a funny sentence,' said Hayes. ''My military parade.'' Trump has never served in the armed forces and reportedly avoided the Vietnam War draft with a diagnosis of bone spurs in his feet. The daughter of the doctor who provided the diagnosis later said he had done so as a favor to his landlord — Trump's father, Fred Trump. The parade and surrounding festivities are meant to celebrate the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary, though the event notably also falls on Trump's 79th birthday. It is set to feature nearly 7,000 troops, various ground vehicles and fighter jet flyovers in a display that could cost up to $45 million. It will coincide with expected protests across the country, which retired military officials believe could be a dangerous combination. 'Donald Trump has already promised, quote, 'very heavy force' against anyone who would choose to protest his special day,' Hayes said Friday. 'He didn't direct this at rioters or looters or people that broke the law, you know. He said protesters would be met with very heavy force.' The president issued that warning Tuesday from the Oval Office. Red Sox ace Crochet says he was happy to ‘live and die with my best pitch' vs Judge

The Red Sox have had a chance in games whenever Garrett Crochet has been on the mound this season. And with the exception of one pitch in Friday's 2-1, extra-inning win over the Yankees, he again proved to be the antidote to Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. Advertisement Crochet held New York scoreless over a career-high 8 1/3 innings, striking out the Yankees slugger three times while holding the rest of New York's lineup to four hits with seven total Ks. But with Boston clinging to a 1-0 lead and Crochet back on the hill to try to finish the game in the ninth, his fourth time facing Judge proved costly. Crochet took him to a full count, but let his 99 mph fastball dip down in the strike zone — Judge's sweet spot. He jumped on it, blasting it 443 feet over the Green Monster and out of Fenway Park to tie the game. 'I'm going to live and die with my best pitch,' Crochet said afterward. 'Whether it be pitch selection or execution, tough way to end it. But overall, I felt really good tonight.' It helped that Crochet's partner throughout the night — catcher and former Yankee Carlos Narváez — helped put a happy face on the night, when he ended the game with a walk-off single in the 10th. Crochet didn't get the victory, but Narváez said it didn't diminish his masterful night on the mound. Advertisement For the season, Judge is just 1 for 7 with six strikeouts against Crochet. 'Crochet was awesome,' Narváez said. 'He made a mistake a little bit. But that was a 100 mph fastball. That was impressive. ... Probably the best pitcher now against the best hitter in baseball.' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he has no regrets leaving Crochet in the game. 'That wasn't fun. But our guy was throwing great,' Cora said. 'He was efficient toward the end. We gave him a shot. It didn't work out. That's why (Judge) is who he is. One of the best in world, and he got one pitch down and he hit it out of the ballpark. You tip your hat.' Advertisement Though he acknowledged he'd probably lose sleep over Judge's last at-bat, Crochet was proud of his overall outing. 'It was a special feeling jogging back out there. Standing (ovation). I could tell the fans wanted me out there,' Crochet said. 'I already wanted to be out there pretty bad. But it made it mean a little bit more. It made me grab a little bit more in that inning. I wish I could have finished it out. ... If my night had to end there from a home run I'm at least glad that it was on a fastball.' This is a developing story.
