How Alessia Russo has turned Arsenal's fortunes around and can lead them past Lyon and on to European glory, writes TARA ANSON-WALSH

Daily Mail26-04-2025

It took Alessia Russo just 14 minutes to show the rest of the world why she is one of the most in-demand strikers in women's football.
Arsenal were trailing by two goals against Real Madrid going into the second leg of their quarter-final tie at the Emirates, and their hopes of lifting a first Champions League trophy in 18 years were gradually fading into the distance.
Forty-five seconds after the second-half whistle blew, Russo came out swinging. First, she raised a hand when she saw Chloe Kelly with the ball on the edge of the area. Kelly didn't need asking twice, firing the ball into the box with a perfectly weighted pass for Russo to run onto and tap home first time.
Moments later, Russo paced it into the box and blocked off a Madrid defender, freeing up the space behind her for Mariona Caldentey to run into, and the Spanish World Cup winner converted.
Finally, Russo saved the best until last. Katie McCabe curled a free-kick into the box, and a ricochet off a Madrid player's head diverted Russo's way. Half-falling, half-stretching, Russo reached out, her boot connecting cleanly as she blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Finally, the 26-year-old allowed herself to celebrate.
Russo burst into the spotlight with the Lionesses during the 2022 Euros-winning campaign, coming on as an impact sub alongside her Manchester United team-mate Ella Toone, the two having a telepathic relationship both on and off the pitch. Russo has previously described how she felt firmly within her comfort zone at United – and the Arsenal move disrupted this.
Despite a slow start to life in north London, there was always an underlying sense that the goals would come as she and the team took time to settle in and develop their connections on the pitch. She ended up delivering 12 goals in the top flight by the end of her first season with the Gunners, second behind only Manchester City's prolific Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw.
Since Renee Slegers took over from Jonas Eidevall in the early stages of this season, Russo's rise has been nothing short of meteoric, as her all-round game improved, too. Her ability to hold up the ball enables her team to build their attacks quickly around her, and Arsenal have netted more goals than any other side in the WSL this season with Russo as their top scorer – a considerable feat given their early woes under Eidevall.
And a neat little partnership has begun to emerge with Chloe Kelly – who herself has come on leaps and bounds since making the swap from Manchester for London in January this year.
Those connected with the club say that Kelly's friendships with Arsenal's strong Lionesses contingent have helped her settle in and hit the ground running, and she has begun to bring out the best in her teammates around her, too – including with Russo.
When Russo withdrew from the England camp at the beginning of this month with an ankle injury, there was an immediate sense that Arsenal's Champions League hopes had been severely damaged.
But it's understood that Russo left club doctors impressed with how quickly she worked to get back in time for the first leg of their semi-final clash with Lyon – which they trail 1-0.
Away from the pitch, the word that follows Russo around is respect. Respect for her teammates, respect for the coaching staff. 'Work hard' is her mantra, and she shows this both on and off the pitch, with her tireless running and out-of-possession work rate contributing to Arsenal's success under Slegers.
Regardless of what happens next, Arsenal can still be proud of the season they have had after their opening games, when they sat sixth in the WSL and had faced a heavy beating by Bayern Munich in the group stage – which was the final straw that broke the camel's back in leading Eidevall to the door.
Since then, they have clambered above both Manchester sides into second place and into a Champions League qualification spot and have put on a respectable run in Europe's elite competition, making it to the semi-final with memorable wins in the reverse fixture against Bayern Munich, as well as that Real Madrid triumphant comeback.
Next, they set their sights on Lyon, who have successfully made it past their last 11 consecutive semi-finals. The Premiere League leaders did not look infallible in the first leg, though, with the emphasis being more on Arsenal's wastefulness rather than their own dominance.
In terms of the stats, Arsenal did everything correct in the first half of their semi-final tie. They dominated possession, had more shots than Lyon with just as many on target, and almost twice the amount of touches inside their box.
And if Russo's bar-clanging effort before the break had dipped a couple of inches, then the story could have looked very different going into Sunday's match.
And with their largest-ever travelling contingent for a European away game – and Russo leading the line – the Gunners still have every reason to believe this could be their moment.

Arsenal star subject of Barcelona talks as goalkeeper agrees switch

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal to a third successive runner-up finish in the Premier League this season and the Gunners are expected to invest during the summer transfer window Arsenal's main priority this summer appears to be a new striker, but that isn't the only area where they're looking to strengthen. Mikel Arteta's side finished a distant second behind Liverpool in the Premier League, and are likely to need to make additions just to keep pace with their title rivals next term. Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are the two strikers most heavily linked, with talks over a Sesko move underway. The RB Leipzig striker won't come cheap, but those at the club seem to believe he has the quality to lead the line both now and long into the future. ‌ A move for a new striker ought to leave the team better stocked in midfield, with Mikel Merino no longer needed to deputise in attack and Kai Havertz potentially dropping deeper for certain games. A deeper-lying midfielder is still a priority, though, with Martin Zubimendi expected to fill that role. ‌ Mikel Arteta is preparing to lose the likes of Kieran Tierney and Jorginho, while Raheem Sterling and Neto are set to return to their parent clubs. The manager has indicated he'll have the backing of the board this summer, though, and excitement has been building over new arrivals. There's a long way to go before the start of the new season, but we've already seen plenty of movement elsewhere and Arsenal could well be next. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from around the Emirates Stadium. Barcelona in Partey talks Barcelona are in talks over a summer move for Thomas Partey, according to The Sun. The Ghana international is out of contract at Arsenal this summer, so could move for nothing. Partey had been in conversation with Arsenal over an extension. However, with no agreement in place, the Catalan club are said to be exploring a swoop. The former Atletico Madrid man, who turns 32 in June, was one of Mikel Arteta's first signings when he joined in the summer of 2020. Arteta has publicly expressed his desire to keep the player around. ‌ Garcia staying in La Liga Staying with Barcelona, Joan Garcia is set to join Hansi Flick's club from local rivals Espanyol. Goalkeeper Garcia had been a target for Arsenal in previous windows, with Newcastle also linked. According to Sport, though, the 24-year-old has reached an agreement with Barca ahead of a £21million switch. The Catalan publication reports that he will become Barcelona's new keeper next week, once the player returns from a planned holiday. ‌ Wojciech Szczesny and Marc-Andre ter-Stegen have shared goalkeeping duties under Flick next term. Both could yet remain at the club next term and battle it out with Garcia for a starting spot, but the new man is expected to target first-team football from the get-go. Brighton set Joao Pedro asking price Brighton won't accept anything less than £70million for Joao Pedro, The Sun reports. The Brazilian frontman had been mentioned in connection with an Arsenal switch, though Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres still appear to be at the top of the queue. ‌ The 23-year-old joined the Seagulls in a club record deal in the summer of 2023. He has scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the club, who are said to be under no pressure to sell. Two of his 10 league goals last term came against Arsenal. He earned Fabian Hurzeler's side a point against a 10-man Gunners side in August, and also levelled things up in the reverse fixture on the south coast in January. Saudi Pro League eye Andre Onana transfer as Barcelona make Marcus Rashford call

Manchester United are hoping to bounce back from a poor season and they are already making moves in the transfer market, having signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves Manchester United are set for a busy summer as they look to revamp their squad after enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign. United finished 15th in the league and also missed out on Champions League qualification after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The Red Devils have already finalised a £62.5million deal for Matheus Cunha and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are set to complete permanent exits, while captain Bruno Fernandes could also leave. ‌ Al-Hilal are hoping to tempt him to Saudi Arabia with a hugely lucrative £100m contract offer and it remains to be seen whether Fernandes will accept. With all that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news and rumours around Old Trafford... ‌ Onana exit Reports have claimed that Andre Onana is a target for newly-promoted Saudi Pro League side Neom SC. It is claimed that United would be opene to selling the goalkeeper, who made several high-profile errors this season. However, it has previously been reported that Onana wants to fight for his place at Old Trafford. "Andre's plan is to stay in Manchester and he wants to knuckle down and get United back to where they should be," a source was quoted as saying last month. "His sole focus is on United and nothing else. He's a confident person and wants to prove the doubters wrong. He knows he has made mistakes but he sees proving people wrong as a challenge." Barcelona's Rashford call Barcelona have been linked with a move for Marcus Rashford and the club's sporting director, Deco, has delivered an update on their transfer plans. "We have been focusing on renewing contracts, after that, we'll discuss players to come," Deco told BBC Sport. "Of course, these two players, like you mentioned, they are good but have contracts in their clubs, so we won't speak because it's not fair. But when you decide to go to the market, for sure, we find some names. In my opinion, we don't need to bring many players. ‌ "When I speak with the agents of the players, everyone wants to come or stay. So this is important. The image of the club is still good. We are proud because Barcelona is still such a big club, and the way we are playing football makes players want to come." Man Utd eye Udinese star According to Italian outlet Messaggero Veneto, United are interested in Udinese defender Oumar Solet. Solet has impressed since joining Udinese from Salzburg in January and the likes of Napoli and Bournemouth have also been linked with the 25-year-old. The report states that Udinese are planning to cash in on Solet this summer, having set a price tag of around £30m.

Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin issues 'more steps being taken' summer transfer window vow

Boss Jimmy Thelin insists plans are in place to ensure Aberdeen deliver a bright future by building on the Scottish Cup glory. The Dons ended a 35-year Scottish Cup drought when lifting the trophy at Hampden by overcoming Celtic in the final. Thelin has wasted no time in strengthening his Scottish Cup-winning squad – with two signings already confirmed. Australians Nicolas Milanovic and Nick Suman will both join the Dons in the summer, having agreed pre-contracts. Recently-crowned A-League player of the year Milanovic was snapped up for a fee of around £400,000 from Western Sydney Wanderers. Winger Milanovic, 23, will move to Pittodrie on a three-year deal, with the Dons holding the option to extend that to a fourth year. Milanovic was recently on international duty with the Australia squad at a training camp in Abu Dhabi, having received a debut senior call-up. Keeper Suman, 25, will join the Dons upon the expiry of his current deal with Cove Rangers later this month. Aberdeen beat off interest from Hibs, Dundee United and Motherwell to land the former Australia under-23 international. Thelin will use the summer transfer window to build a squad capable of balancing European league action and domestic commitments. Aberdeen will enter the Europa League play-off stage next season. Even if the Reds lose the play-off, they have the safety net of dropping down into the Conference League. Chairman Dave Cormack has vowed to back Thelin during the summer window. Talks with multiple transfer targets are at an advanced stage. Thelin said: 'There's a lot happening now which is good for the future. 'There are a lot of good foundations here which make it possible for Aberdeen to be the big club in Scottish football that we are. 'There are more steps being taken.' As Thelin and his recruitment team work on landing new signings, there have also been departures from Pittodrie. Aberdeen recently confirmed the exit of 12 players. Leaving the club were, Jack MacKenzie, who has joined Plymouth Argyle, and Celtic-bound keeper Ross Doohan. Republic of Ireland international midfielder Jamie McGrath has signed a pre-contract with Hibernian. Loan players Kevin Nisbet (Millwall), Oday Dabbagh (Charleroi), Jeppe Okkels (Preston NE) and Alfie Dorrington (Tottenham Hotspur) all return to their parent clubs. Third-choice keeper Tom Ritchie has also left, as have youth team players Fraser Mackie, Blair McKenzie, Victor Enem and Evan Towler. Thelin is now enjoying a well-earned break after securing Aberdeen's first silverware since 2014. He is delighted with the way the squad embraced his footballing philosophy during a memorable first season. Thelin said: 'The players adapted more and more to what we want to achieve and how we work. That was shown in their intensity and how they pushed themselves more and more. 'Always, when you have a new staff, things change, and it takes time, but you could see the players have their team goals. 'There are those progressions.' Thelin is set to enter his third transfer window as Aberdeen manager. His bid to sign players will be boosted by the lure of European league football. The draw for the Europa League play-off will be made on August 4 with the ties played on August 21 and 28. Thelin was initially confirmed as Aberdeen manager on April 16 last year having agreed to sign on at the Dons from Elfsborg. However, he remained at the Allsvenskan side until the Swedish mid-season break, officially starting at Pittodrie in early June. Thelin said: 'It has been a long season, but I have to say it has gone very quickly. 'I started in Elfsborg and I did the pre-season there, then six months before coming to Aberdeen. 'So for a year-and-a-half I have been working through a lot of windows, but it has all happened so quickly it feels like yesterday. 'I have to say I am in a really good position with the opportunity I've had coming here.'
