The new Match of the Day host and didn't hold back after her half-time faux pas
Unflinching Gabby Logan got her Russells mixed up and then added to the Rangers manager's woes with a killer one-liner.

The new Match of the Day host was on duty in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophic first half which had Brugge three goals clear in a crunch Champions League qualifier.

And she wrongly confused the under-fire Ibrox boss with Russell Watson - before admitting the opera legend might have been more use in the dugout during a farcical 45 minutes.

Speaking on Prime Video, "I think Russell Watson probably, maybe, could have done a slightly better job (than) Russell Martin, of course, (who) was managing the first half."
Martin and his players were booed out of the building for their efforts with former stars Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield left stunned over Rangers' meek resistance.

But for one of their ex-targets who didn't end up moving to Ibrox, it's looking like it'll be a long season on the sidelines. 3 Russell Martin has been busy in the transfer market at Rangers Credit: Getty 3 One of the signings he's missed out on has suffered a serious injury at his new club 3 Gers were beaten to his signing out of Belgium by a Serie A club Credit: AFP Rangers were linked with then-Westerlo striker Matija Frigan earlier in this window. Gers were even preparing to table a bid of £6million to the Belgian side for the forward. He even went on to reveal later that month that the move would interest him due to the nature of Scottish football. Frigan said: "That style of league would suit me, I think I'm a player for that type of football." Gers were eventually beaten to the signing when Serie A side Parma stumped up close to €10million for his services. He made his debut for the Italians at the weekend, coming off the bench in a 2-0 victory over Pescara in the Coppa Italia. But now, Frigan looks set for a lengthy spell on the sideline, as his new club announced in a statement that the striker has suffered a dreaded ACL injury. They said: "Parma Calcio's medical staff announces that this morning, during a training session at the Mutti Training Center in Collecchio, Matija Frigan was interrupted due to a sprain to his left knee. "Following tests performed this afternoon, the striker has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. "The team, the coaching staff, and everyone at Parma Calcio wish Matija a strong return to the field! Nobel Mendy timeline and what he brings revealed, and Dessers' injury impact "Come on, Matija, we're with you!" Meanwhile, another missed transfer target for Gers has signed for a new club - just days after his Ibrox move collapsed. Nobel Mendy had been set to swap Real Betis for Rangers, with a medical arranged for the defender after a £2.5million deal had been agreed. But a reported issue with the medical saw the deal fall through, and Mendy has now signed for Rayo Vallecano on loan. 'I said I wouldn't force move from Newcastle – when Liverpool came in my mind was made up'

Alexander Isak finds himself in a different situation to Georginio Wijnaldum despite the midfielder once successfully sealing his own move from Newcastle United to Liverpool One player who might sympathise with Alexander Isak 's efforts to secure a move from Newcastle to Liverpool is Anfield icon Georginio Wijnaldum. Isak has been at the centre of relentless transfer speculation this summer, with the Reds thought to be leading the chase for his services should he depart the Tyneside outfit. ‌ But his potential move is proving difficult to pull off despite the striker making Newcastle aware of his wish to leave, with a £110million offer from Liverpool earlier this month being turned down. The transfer saga has become increasingly messy, with relations between club and player souring as Eddie Howe excluded Isak from the team's pre-season matches and the Swede trains by himself. ‌ Isak did not feature in Newcastle's Premier League curtain-raiser against Aston Villa, where chants from his own fans branded him as "greedy". On Tuesday, the 25-year-old issued a stunning statement in which he suggested he might not play for Newcastle again, claiming "promises have been broken" and "trust has been lost". ‌ Among the various players to have moved from St James' Park to Anfield previously is Wijnaldum, who the Magpies supporters once also implored to stay. The Dutch midfielder, currently at Al-Ettifaq, was snapped up by the Reds for £25m after Newcastle's relegation in 2016. He became instrumental in Liverpool's triumphs in the following seasons as Liverpool lifted the Premier League and Champions League - trophies Isak undoubtedly hopes to win too. Unsurprisingly, Wijnaldum had no regrets over joining Jurgen Klopp 's side, but remained grateful for the role Newcastle played in his development and insisted he did not force a move away. Speaking to the Liverpool Echo before his 2017 return to face his former club, Wijnaldum said: 'I remember my last game for Newcastle in the pre-season when their fans were singing that they wanted me to stay. "But when the opportunity came to play for a great club like Liverpool with such a great history I had to take it. I hope they understand why I made that choice to go to Liverpool. 'When the previous season at Newcastle ended, I said publicly that I wouldn't force a move. When Liverpool came in for me I made up my mind that I wanted to come here, but I wasn't going to force it because I appreciated what Newcastle and their fans did for me.' ‌ He continued: 'It's always a special game when you play against your previous club. It was only one year at Newcastle but that time there meant a lot to me. I met some great people who helped me to play good games in the Premier League and it was because of them I got the move to Liverpool.' Despite his positive comments about his year-long spell on Tyneside and claiming he had not agitated for a transfer, unlike Isak who is deemed to have done so, the 34-year-old was accused of lacking fight and commitment before jumping ship by the Newcastle fans. ‌ Isak, in comparison, has made a significant impact in his three-year stint with Newcastle, emerging as one of the Premier League's top players and scoring a goal in the Carabao Cup final to break their long-standing trophy drought. In his first match back on Tyneside, Wijnaldum hit the post but failed to make an impact in front of a raucous home crowd, who booed him whenever the two clubs clashed in later matches. Wijnaldum made 237 appearances for Liverpool, netting 22 goals, including a memorable brace against Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final second leg, which inspired Liverpool to a 4–3 aggregate victory. It's not fair the manager gets all the blame... the Rangers players need to accept the flak from fans, too, says John Souttar

John Souttar has leapt to the defence of Rangers boss Russell Martin - insisting that it's unfair for the under-fire manager to take all the heat from furious supporters. Souttar captained Rangers during a shambolic display against Club Brugge at Ibrox on Tuesday night as they fell to a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie. Brugge led 3-0 after just 20 minutes as Rangers capitulated, with a large section of the crowd turning on Martin and calling for him to be sacked barely six weeks into the job. Souttar accepts the anger from supporters, but believes the players were also culpable and must shoulder their share of responsibility as well as the manager. 'Of course it's difficult (to hear the criticism), but when you are here at Rangers and 3-0 down, you have to expect it,' said Souttar. 'Everyone knows the demands and the demands were to win and go through in the tie. 'We still have next week obviously, but the way we started, we put pressure on ourselves. The first two goals especially were poor, so we have to look back on that and next week we need to start better. 'Look, I think it's unfair for him (Martin) to take the flak. I think we all have to take it. It's not just the manager, I think we are all due it. 'Everyone at this club who wants to play here has to understand that when things are not going well and the demands are not met then you are going to take the flak. You need to accept that.' Souttar fronted up as captain, but his performance left a lot to be desired. He showed no leadership or communication skills during that early Brugge onslaught. 'First half, I think we actually shot ourselves in the foot with how we started,' he continued. 'When you give away the goals we did that makes any game difficult. 'Especially a game like that when there is so much at stake and we are playing against a team of that quality. Second half we were a bit better and made them a bit more uncomfortable but first half I thought the damage was done. 'I think that's going to put anyone off (some fans left early). You can plan for anything, but you can't plan for losing two goals like that. 'Especially on an occasion like that and it's up to us to react. We did a bit in the second half and got the goal back and now we've got to go over there and see what happens.' The tie is as good as over ahead of next week's second leg in Belgium, but Souttar is determined that Rangers at least go and give it their best shot. 'Of course we have to cling on to that, we have to cling on to something,' he added. 'The way we played second half we were on the front foot and obviously it's easier when you have nothing to lose. 'We wanted to start like that but when you lose two goals like that it naturally derails everything. It's going to derail any game plan, so second half we were a bit better and when we go over there next week we've got to play like that. 'I thought we brought all the pressure on ourselves by conceding those two goals in the manner we did. That brings pressure on yourself and makes everything harder so we have to go over there and we have to be on the front foot. 'We can't afford to give goals away the way we did and we need to implement our game plan on them instead of giving them the start we did. 'Look, there is still the belief because we have had big results away from home in Europe in the last few years so there is that belief. But there is no point saying that, we need to go and show it.'
