Liverpool transfer 'alternative' left Olivier Giroud stunned with his attitude

Daily Mirror4 days ago
Liverpool are expected to still have a busy final few weeks of the summer transfer window as Alexander Isak's saga drags on, with alternatives being named while Newcastle hold firm
Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud hailed the attitude of Bradley Barcola, the PSG star linked with a move to Liverpool. The Reds are all in on Alexander Isak, despite seeing a £110million bid rejected already, but Kop chiefs are big fans of the 22-year-old too.

Barcola joined PSG in 2023 and took on the intimidating task of replacing his compatriot Kylian Mbappe, when he left for Real Madrid last summer - a responsibility he certainly hasn't shirked. While Barcola was involved in a permanent battle for a starting place under Luis Enrique, he scored 21 goals and bagged 19 assists in all competitions as PSG won Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season.

French outlet L'Equipe has claimed that Liverpool are keen on Barcola, but Mirror Football understands that while there's admiration at Anfield, there'll be no move at this time.

Liverpool are pushing for Isak, while Paris Saint-Germain aren't willing to let him leave this summer regardless - while Barcola himself isn't pushing to move.
Suggestions he could be an alternative to Isak - allowing Hugo Ekitike to exclusively be used as the starting No.9 - aren't right, with Liverpool showing in the past that they won't pivot to secondary targets if they don't secure their first choice. There is also the matter of giving Rio Ngumoha, the 16-year-old sensation, room into which to grow.
That's not to say that Barcola won't be of interest down the line however. And French icon Giroud has given the youngster a glowing recommendation, praising his confidence after Barcola made a £43.5m move to the French Champions.
"He's a shy guy in the dressing room," Giroud said in his column for L'Equipe in April 2024. "But he's very intelligent. You have some people who talk a lot. But the guy who is shy… they see everything and, afterwards, if you give advice to that guy, he knows what he has to do.
"He has always been discreet off the field. He is someone who speaks little… What surprised me about him, and about today's young players, is how confident they are during their early training sessions. Especially him.

"From the start, he showed what he's capable of. You can see the potential. He still has room to grow, but he's already very skilled in dribbling and penetration."
Former Lyon assistant manager Franck Passi echoed Giroud's comments that Barcola cuts a reserved nature, yet his talent is boundless, as is his adaptability.
'He's a shy guy in the dressing room. But he's very intelligent," Passi said to The Athletic. "You have some people who talk a lot. But the guy who is shy… they see everything and, afterwards, if you give advice to that guy, he knows what he has to do.

'Today, because he's full of confidence, he is able to do other things and showing all his skills when cutting inside. We see his ability in front of the near post; he can score goals, can cross, can play a key pass. He can do anything."
With Darwin Nunez on the brink of a move to Al-Hilal, Luis Diaz already departing for Bayern Munich and the untimely tragic death of Diogo Jota, there has been a need for attacking reinforcements at Anfield.
The futures of Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa are also in doubt.

'Do we have a trophy cabinet big enough?' - fans on Wembley joy

We asked for your views on Crystal Palace beating Liverpool in the Community Shield on penalties. Here are some of your comments:Paul: This, for me, is the best Palace side I have seen since supporting them from 1977. What makes it special is that we now have three players who look like they will score regularly. On our day, we can beat anybody!Andy: Palace deserved it based on the second half. Now the Palace hierarchy needs to go all in on Glasner. He is one of the best managers in football and Palace need to keep Crystal Palace are a force now. Get some more players and watch In my opinion, Mateta is a better striker than Harry Kane; he has won two trophies with a mid-table team, while Harry can barely scrape onto the list of players with a competitive trophy, never mind that he was at Spurs and Bayern. So, when a man who is worth £15-20m is said to be 'not a quality player,' just think of this. Mike: What a manager Oliver Glasner is. I only hope Parish supports him with the additional players he Forget the Uefa ruling, forget the future of Eze, Guehi, and the lack of transfer activity. The real issue is, do we have a trophy cabinet big enough?Nick: Palace deserved to win after the second-half performance. Hopefully, an even bigger win on Monday with the Europa decision. Keep the main guys, and who knows what they can achieve this season.

Wirtz 'exceptional' but Liverpool 'toil'

Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison believes the "exceptional" performance of Florian Wirtz wasn't enough to stop Liverpool "toiling", as they lost the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on have already seen five incomings so far this transfer window, and it was the club's record signing that caught the eye at on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Hutchinson said: "Florian Wirtz was the player who got me off the edge of my seat today. I thought some of his one touches and his awareness was brilliant."He always plays checking his shoulders and wants to play a forward pass and I thought he was exceptional for 40 minutes".The Reds had twice been in front but saw Crystal Palace get back in to the game to pick up a second trophy in three Mohamed Salah missing an opportunity to win the match in normal time, Hutchison believes the game shows there is plenty of work still to do as the season begins."I think what the game told you about Liverpool is that they are slightly behind in terms of bedding players in to a team and a system," he added."Once Hugo Ekitike came off, they tried to gamble with Wirtz as a false nine and you will see that this season - and I'm sure he'll do well in that position - but today I thought it was a bit too much for him."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds here.

Steve Parish admits Crystal Palace may have to sell Marc Guehi this summer

The Eagles came back to beat Liverpool in a penalty shoot-out and lift the Community Shield at Wembley. Palace's second piece of silverware in 86 days – after winning the FA Cup in May – was a welcome reprieve from their ongoing legal battle, with the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) expected to rule on Monday whether they will play in the Europa League or Conference League this season. Marc Guehi lifts the Community Shield trophy (Adam Davy/PA) Guehi's contract expires at the end of this campaign and Sunday's opponents Liverpool are thought to be frontrunners to secure the signature of the 25-year-old England defender. 'Yes. I mean, we'd have to, of course,' said Parish, who is also co-owner, when asked if he would seriously entertain tempting bids for his skipper over the next three weeks. 'For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem. No doubt about it, unfortunately. 'We had one bid (last summer) but Joachim (Andersen) went (to Fulham) and we couldn't afford to lose both of them. We then had another bid in January but that was a difficult situation as well, and the player had a point of view on that one. 'So we just have to see what happens but it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.' Guehi, suffering from cramp, came off late in second-half stoppage time at Wembley. It was his replacement, 21-year-old Northern Ireland international Justin Devenny, who ultimately fired home the winning penalty in the 3-2 shoot-out after the sides remained locked in a 2-2 stalemate at the end of normal time. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish congratulates his players (Adam Davy/PA) Palace boss Oliver Glasner is adamant the Eagles need at least two more quality additions – even before any potential departures – while other top talent including Eberechi Eze, who has been linked to Arsenal, might also be lured away. 'I think in the end, people trade players. That's what football clubs do,' said Parish. 'If you just don't care about reinvigorating the team, you don't care about tomorrow, ever, you just put it all off. 'Then, we're a fantastic team, you know and if we had four more players, I don't know what we could achieve but unfortunately it's not always as simple as that.' Parish pointed to the 'crazy' and 'just nuts' fees for players and the club's outgoings this year. 'We'll have to see,' added the chairman. 'We'll do whatever we can. We won't stop working and we will do whatever we can. 'But as far as people being here or not being here, it depends. If it's the right decision for the football club and for them, nobody can make anyone go, then there will be some changes, but you've got to make smart ones.'
