IIT-Kgp gets full-time director after 6 months

Kolkata: Suman Chakraborty, institute chair professor in mechanical engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, was appointed the institute's full-time director on Thursday.
A winner of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty is currently a J C Bose National fellow.
He was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by Unesco for his work in micro- and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihood and healthcare access.
Chakraborty confirmed he had received the appointment letter for the IIT-Kgp director's post. "The institute needs a cultural transformation. A healthy environment with positive thinking and free flow of ideas should prevail and the environment of intimidation should be eliminated.
Young students lost their lives. Despite the institute's efforts, we have not been able to address the matter. If we can collectively work, things will change for the better," he said.
"My biggest happiness will be to work for IIT-Kgp's academic progress."
After V K Tewari's retirement in Dec 2024, the campus was being run by IIT-Varanasi director Amit Patra.
Chakraborty graduated from JU in mechanical engineering in 1996 and did his ME at IISc. He joined JU as a lecturer. He received his PhD from IISc in 2002. He joined IIT-Kgp in 2002 as an assistant professor.

Our semiconductor mission has a component - Design Linked Incentives (DLI) - to encourage startups who innovate and design chips. Founded in 2021, Mindgrove designs innovative SoCs and hardware in India for the global market. The chips are designed for devices such as CCTV cameras, industrial applications under Industry 4.0, and other Internet of Things (IoT) products. Live Events Mindgrove Technologies, a fabless semiconductor start-up, recently confirmed that it has placed its first mass manufacturing order for secure IoT chips with its foundry partner, as per the media report cited by the minister. In September last year, Mindgrove received approval under the DLI scheme, amounting to Rs 15 crore, to develop its second product line - the Vision SoC, the same media report said.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he interacted with undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students, as well as innovators and researchers, officials said. He also announced that he would revisit the institute to review innovations being developed by students. Encouraging students to bring forward innovative ideas, Pradhan assured them that the government 'stands shoulder to shoulder with India's innovators and researchers for shaping a brighter future and for establishing India as a global hub of solutions.' He also underlined the crucial role of IITs as 'the bedrock of a self-reliant India.' 'After meeting these students, I can confidently say that by 2047, India will be a developed nation, in line with the dreams of the Prime Minister. I can see a golden future being created on the shoulders of our youth in the coming 20–25 years,' Pradhan said. Speaking on the occasion, Vineet Joshi, secretary, department of higher education, reiterated the Prime Minister's Independence Day message on the role of youth in making the country self-reliant. He added that the department is extending full support to higher education institutions in advancing innovation, strengthening research capacities and addressing national challenges.

New Delhi: Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday called upon students of IIT-Delhi to lead India's innovation journey towards ' Atmanirbhar Bharat ', echoing PM Narendra Modi's Independence Day emphasis on self-reliance. Interacting with undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctoral researchers at the institute, Pradhan said the coming decades offer a "unique opportunity" to drive national priorities and achieve the vision of a Samridhh Bharat by 2047. He urged students to "keep hustling until we achieve self-reliance in every sphere" and assured them of govt support in translating their ideas into solutions of global relevance. "The talent, tenacity and resolve of our youth, coupled with the pursuit of self-reliance, will strengthen Bharat's capabilities and enhance her technological and economic sovereignty," the minister said, adding that IITs form the "bedrock" of this vision.
