Old images mislead about taxi violence in South Africa
'Taxis set alight in Sisa North West. Members of the community became angry after Taxi drivers stopped vehicles with more than three occupants on their way to work forcing them to use their Taxis,' reads a Facebook post published on July 24, 2025.
The post, shared more than 3,400 times, includes two pictures of burning minibuses — vehicles commonly used in South Africa's informal public transport sector.
Similar posts circulated on X, garnering over 13,000 likes, and on TikTok and Instagram.
However, the claims are misleading.
2022 violence
A reverse image search revealed that the pictures have been online for more than three years and first featured in local articles and community newspapers that described two taxis set alight at Thembelani Mine in Rustenberg in the North West province (archived here and here).
'The incident occurred after some taxi operators had allegedly beaten up three mineworkers for taking away their business by ferrying passengers using their vehicles,' Platinum Weekly, a local community paper, reported on May 20, 2022.
The photos were also published on X, with the same caption as the claims circulating in 2025 (archived here).
The same claim was debunked in 2024 after another X user posted the misleading pictures (archived here).
Provincial police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone told AFP Fact Check on August 1, 2025, that they are 'not aware of recent incidents of taxi violence'.
Not so in other provinces, however.
In neighbouring Gauteng, officials announced the formation of a specialised task team in July to combat ongoing taxi violence after at least 59 people linked to the industry were killed in the first three months of this year (archived here and here).
Another task team is operating in the Western Cape, in partnership with the local taxi industry, to quell a similar spate of deadly disputes over lucrative routes (archived here).

2 dead, 8 hurt in Chicago weekend shootings, police say
At least two people are dead and eight others were hurt in weekend shootings across Chicago as of Saturday. The ages of the victims range from 16 to 39. In the first shooting of the weekend, a 26-year-old man was in the parking lot in the 0-100 block of West 79th Street, just before 7 p.m., when he was approached by two unknown gunmen who fired shots. The victim was shot in the head and shoulder and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Later in the evening, a 35-year-old man was shot multiple times about the body just before 8:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of West Adams Street. The victim self-transported to Loretto Hospital in critical condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident. A weapon was recovered on the scene. Police said detectives are speaking with a person of interest. Two other men, 33 and 35, were also shot around 9:46 p.m. in the 4600 block of Lake Street. Police said they were inside a vehicle when a dark sedan pulled up and someone from inside shot at them. Both were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The 35-year-old was in critical condition, and the 33-year-old was in serious condition. In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday: Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in either incident. CBS News Chicago will continue to update throughout the weekend.

Two people shot outside Towne East Square, witnesses react
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Two teenagers were critically injured and three others were arrested after a shooting Friday afternoon in the Towne East Square parking lot. Wichita police say a fight between five males turned violent around 3:36 p.m. Shots were fired, hitting one teen in the upper body and another in the leg. Officers applied a tourniquet before paramedics took them to the hospital. Both are in critical but stable condition. An off-duty Great Bend police officer, in plain clothes, detained one suspect armed with what appeared to be a rifle-caliber pistol. Wichita officers arrested two more suspects soon after. The 17-year-old suspect faces two counts of attempted murder. The other two, both 16, are charged with disorderly conduct. Rose Hill mom pleads no contest in murder of adopted daughter; sentencing set 'This is another example of teens, with a high-powered weapon, making very poor choices and as tragic as this is, we have two young people in the hospital. It could have been so much worse,' Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said. 'So, we're grateful for the off-duty officer and the very quick response of the Wichita Police Department, so this did not result in further tragedy.' Witness Sarah Meier said she was separated from her two young children when a store locked down. She says her years of dealing with children and active shooter training paid off. 'Well, I'm not thinking about myself, I'm just thinking about my babies,' Meier said. '[It] took me back to being a teacher and having to stay calm and make sure the kids are taken care of first and foremost, no matter what else happens,' Meier said. In March 2022, Trenjvious Hutton, 14, was shot and killed outside the same business following a disturbance between a group of teens. 3 wounded in Times Square shooting; suspected gunman, 17, in custody
NEW YORK — Three people, including an innocent 65-year-old man, were hospitalized early Saturday after a teen triggerman blasted away at a rival in Times Square, officials said. NYPD officers monitoring the Crossroads of the World who heard the shots raced over and apprehended the suspected shooter, a 17-year-old boy, following the 1:20 a.m. shooting at the corner of West 44th Street and Eighth Avenue. Charges against the suspect were pending Saturday. Before the bloodshed began, the teen got into an argument with a 19-year-old man he was walking through Times Square with, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case said. The two and several others had tried to get inside a restaurant near the corner, a police source with knowledge of the case said. The argument continued outside the eatery, where the 17-year-old pulled a gun and started firing, hitting the older teen in the foot, police said. Bullets also hit an 18-year-old woman, grazing her neck, and a 65-year-old man standing nearby, who was hit in the left flank, cops said. The two other victims weren't involved in the fight and are considered innocent bystanders, the police source said. It was not immediately clear if any of the victims were together when the shooting started. EMS took all three to Bellevue Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. The shooter's firearm was recovered at the scene, cops said. Videos on X show panicked people running past the Hard Rock Café after the shooting occurred. Dozens of cops responded to the scene and zeroed in on a gray SUV with commercial license plates. Officers were recorded escorting two women from the back of the vehicle. One of the women looks upset, while the other holds a small cardboard tray with drinks from Starbucks. The vehicle remained at the scene, its doors opened, for several hours as cops cordoned off the area. The 19-year-old victim, wearing a du-rag, was recorded being taken to an awaiting ambulance. His left foot and ankle was bandaged. As the street was cleared, cops flagged evidence with red cones by the famed Times Square restaurant Carmine's. Saturday's bloodshed comes as the NYPD celebrates a 23% drop in shootings this year from 649 to 500 as of last Sunday, cops said. Homicides were also down by 25%, from 241 this time last year to 179, according to NYPD statistics.
