Ford, America's biggest carmaker, recalls 274,000 SUVs over faulty brakes

Daily Mail15-05-2025

America's largest car manufacturer has recalled 273,789 SUVs due to an issue that may cause a loss of brake function while driving which in turn increases the risk of a crash.
Ford issued the alert for 223,315 Expeditions and 50,474 Navigators that were produced between 2022 and 2024.
The recall comes after it was found that the front brake lines in the now-recalled cars 'may be in contact' with their engine air cleaner outlet pipe due to a potential installation defect, according to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The fault can result in a brake fluid leak and/or a loss of brake function.
Impacted drivers may experience an increase in pedal travel, NHSTA documents warned, meaning that the pedal would need to be pressed harder in order to sufficiently apply the brakes.
If there's a leaking brake line, the fluid level will decrease over time - potentially causing the red brake warning indicator to light up.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall and expects just one per cent of the recalled vehicles to have the defect.
However, at least 45 owners have reported front brake line leaks since April 17.
Impacted owners are expected to be notified of the recall via letter starting from May 26, which will include instructions on how they should proceed.
Dealers at Ford or Lincoln facilities will inspect the front brake line for proper clearances, proper routing and retention.
The recall reads: 'The dealer will replace the brake line or air cleaner outlet pipe as required. There will be no charge for this service.'
Between March and April 2025, Ford looked into operations at their Kentucky Truck Plant and found that on November 20, 2024, the plant had changed the way they stored the radiator hose during engine installation.
The change was made to stop the brake line from getting bent and to ensure everything fit properly.
The team discovered that before the change, some Expedition and Navigator vehicles might have had a problem.
During engine installation, the radiator hose could accidentally catch and bend the right front brake line.
If that happened, the brake line might not be routed correctly and could rub against another engine part - the air cleaner outlet pipe - which could cause damage over time.
NHSTA stated: 'As of April 17, 2025, Ford is aware of 45 warranty reports of a front brake line leak received between November 4, 2022 and April 8, 2024.
'Additionally, Ford is aware of two field reports received on August 4, 2022 and April 10, 2025, and two Customer Service Reports received on June 26, 2024 and August 28, 2024.'
Ford issued a similar recall in April over fears that vehicles could burst into flames on the road.
The recall included the 2020-2022 Ford Escape and 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport.
NHTSA officials noted that the 33,576 vehicles were actually part of two previous recalls, which failed to correctly fix the damage.
The fuel injector is a key piece of any gas-powered automobile, acting as a tiny sprinkler that sprays gasoline into the car's engine.
When this part of the vehicle is cracked, gas can start dripping into other parts of the engine, which can get extremely hot when the car is running.
If the engine parts exposed to gas are too hot or if there is even a tiny spark from the car's electrical systems, the gasoline could ignite triggering a blaze.
Drivers affected by this recall should have received a notice in the mail around April 24.
Ford will be fixing the cracks, plus updating each car's powertrain control module software free of charge.

Top 10 fastest-selling used cars last month with bargain hatchback topping the list… and a shock runner-up

THE top 10 fastest-selling motors last month have been revealed - and the car ranked in second place is somewhat surprising. Data from Motors shared this week showed that used examples of the evergreen Vauxhall Corsa were the quickest out of the door of dealerships across the country in May. 2 On average, a Corsa that's roughly six months to a year old stood on a forecourt for just 8.6 days before it was snapped up. The much-loved hatchback, which, on average costs between £11,000 and £14,000 second-hand, was followed, perhaps surprisingly, by the Ford Explorer in second place. Nearly-new examples of the pure-electric family SUV sold after 11.6 days on average - which the experts at Motors believing the Explorer's popularity was down to its 'keen pricing'. Still, the Explorer's place on the list is by far the most eye-catching, compared to others. The full top-10 list can be found below. Fastest selling used cars in the UK in May 1 - Vauxhall Corsa Age: 6 Months to 1 Year Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: Less than 5k Miles Average Days to Sell: 8.6 2 - Ford Explorer Age: Less than 6 Months Fuel Type: Electric Mileage: Less than 5k Miles Average Days to Sell: 11.6 3 - MG HS Age: 1 Year to 2 Years Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: 10k Miles to 20k Miles Average Days to Sell: 11.7 4 - Seat Ateca Age: Less than 6 Months Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: Less than 5k Miles Average Days to Sell: 13.1 5 - Peugeot 2008 Age: Less than 6 Months Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: Less than 5k Miles Average Days to Sell: 13.2 6 - Toyota Yaris Age: 2 Years to 3 Years Fuel Type: Hybrid Mileage: 10k Miles to 20k Miles Average Days to Sell: 14.7 7 - MG HS Age: 1 Year to 2 Years Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: 5k Miles to 10k Miles Average Days to Sell: 14.8 8 - Vauxhall Corsa Age: 3 Years to 4 Years Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: 20k Miles to 30k Miles Average Days to Sell: 16.0 9 - Peugeot 208 Age: Less than 6 Months Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: Less than 5k Miles Average Days to Sell: 16.2 10 - Nissan Qashqai Age: 3 Years to 4 Years Fuel Type: Petrol Mileage: 10k Miles to 20k Miles Average Days to Sell: 17.9 Motors also revealed that dealer inventories averaged 52 units during May with the average price of a used car on their platform at £17,197. Overall, dealers were forced to trim their prices to get stock off of their forecourts. Commenting on the data for May, Motors marketing director Lucy Tugby told Car Dealer Mag: 'Other nearly new cars in our Top 10 include the Seat Ateca, Peugeot 2008 and Peugeot 208, suggesting competitive pricing as dealers moved to clear their stocks to avoid competing with promotions on new cars. 'The fast sales were achieved despite our May Market View analysis tracking a monthly increase in days to sell from 29.3 to 30.3.' Toyota RAV4 Generations: Full Evolution From 1996 To 2025

Here's how the RAV4 has changed across six generations. The Crossover That Started It All The Toyota RAV4 has been a key proponent of the crossover craze since its arrival three decades ago. It offered all the benefits of a sedan, but with the extra ride height and superior dirt-road performance usually associated with true body-on-frame SUVs. With the sixth-generation RAV4 now revealed, we expect the RAV4 to retain its best-seller status for years to come. Here's a look at all generations of the RAV4, from the first one to the modern hybrid-only model. First-Generation (XA10) Toyota RAV4 Source: Toyota The first-gen Toyota RAV4 set the standard for future rivals like the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. This RAV4's model years ran from 1996 to 2000 in the USA. The styling was cute and tough at the same time, and this early RAV4 was also available in sporty three-door form, or with a soft-top. Toyota kept things simple under the hood, relying on a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine sending power to the front or all four wheels, with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. A facelift for the 1998 model year introduced a few styling revisions, and Toyota even experimented with a fully electric version for the 2000 model year, but this only had an 88-mile range. Well over 50,000 first-gen RAV4s were sold in the United States in every year of production, confirming that this was the sort of car buyers were drawn to. Second-Generation (XA20) Toyota RAV4 Source: Toyota So, when did the the RAV4 change its available body styles? It started here with a simplified lineup. Produced for the 2001 to 2005 model years, the XA20 RAV4 was once again available in three- and five-door form, but only the five-door body style made it to America. The styling was modernized, but retained a sporty look with well-executed rugged touches. Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. Initially, Toyota stuck with the 2.0-liter four-pot, but a larger 2.4-liter engine with 161 horsepower debuted for the 2004 model year, somewhat addressing criticisms of the underpowered standard engine. That same model year, the RAV4 received a host of safety upgrades, including standard stability and traction control. A RAV4 EV was also available over this period, with a maximum range of 95 miles, but availability was extremely limited. Third-Generation (XA30) Toyota RAV4 Source: Toyota A significant bump up in power coincided with the launch of the third-gen RAV4; this RAV4 generation's model years ran from 2006 to 2012. The big increase in power came despite fact that the design was softened to an extent that made this model appear a bit anonymous. The headlining engine was a 3.5-liter V6 producing 269 hp, far more than any previous RAV4. A more efficient 2.4L four-cylinder was standard. A manual gearbox was no longer available, but the V6 received a new five-speed automatic. The 2.4L model stuck with a four-speed auto. For the first time, the RAV4 EV cracked 100 miles on a full charge. This RAV4 was the first to lead all Toyota SUVs in terms of sales in the USA; over 170,000 units were sold in America for the first time in 2007, as the RAV4 continued to surge in popularity. Fourth-Generation (XA40) Toyota RAV4 On sale for the 2013 to 2018 model years, the XA40 featured a few noticeable styling changes not seen in previous generations of the RAV4: It had a rear liftgate instead of a rear door that opened to the side, while the spare wheel was no longer mounted at the back. A major change was the introduction of a hybrid model, which could return 34 mpg in city driving – a vast improvement over the standard, non-hybrid model. The unpopular V6 was dropped, but a new six-speed automatic was implemented for the standard four-cylinder engine. Inside, a more modern design was introduced, but Toyota got rid of the small, optional third seating row. The overall impact of these changes was tremendous, with the fourth-gen RAV4 topping 350,000 annual sales for the first time in 2016. Fifth-Generation (XA50) Toyota RAV4 As of this writing, the fifth-gen RAV4 is still on sale, but will be replaced after the 2025 model year. Introduced in 2018, this generation of the RAV4 was given a far more appealing look, with sharp, aggressive angles and beefy body cladding, all aimed at evoking the adventurous spirit of the original model. The unibody chassis improved in rigidity by 57 percent, creating a RAV4 that steered and drove with more sophistication than previous models. A new torque-vectoring four-wheel-drive system also debuted, with the ability to individually direct torque to each rear wheel, based on the driving scenario. Engine choices include a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, along with a hybrid version of the same engine. Non-hybrid models have an eight-speed automatic. The big news, however, was the arrival of the 2021 RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid version with 302 hp and over 40 miles of all-electric range. It became the quickest RAV4 ever. In 2024, the RAV4 dethroned the Ford F-150 for the first time in decades, becoming the country's top-selling vehicle. That says all you need to know about the success of this RAV4 generation. Sixth-Generation (XA60) Toyota RAV4 Finally, we arrive at the all-new RAV4, revealed in the first half of 2025. Inside and out, it has a completely fresh look, with cleaner lines than the outgoing model. However, it remains similar in size. For this generation, Toyota has switched over to hybrid power exclusively, a smart move given the popularity of hybrid powertrains presently. The standard hybrid develops 226 hp (FWD) or 236 hp (AWD), while the plug-in hybrid produces a stout 320 hp. These are all improvements over the previous RAV4. Buyers looking for something with a sporting edge can opt for the new GR Sport trim, which is more than just a visual upgrade. It also features special tuning for improved handling and is exclusively offered with the 320-hp powertrain. This all-hybrid RAV4 is a far cry from the first-gen model, but it remains an irresistible mix of practicality, compact size, and some rugged capability. FAQs What is the most reliable year of the RAV4? Based on our research, the 2018 Toyota RAV4 has an impeccable reliability record, and is the most highly recommended RAV4 model year. What year did the RAV4's body change? The second-generation of the RAV4 to be sold in America did not have a three-door option. Other than that, the fifth-gen RAV4 marked a significant stylistic departure from conservative previous models. Will the RAV4 be redesigned in 2025? The sixth-gen, 2026 Toyota RAV4 has an all-new design and has already been revealed in 2025. The 2025 RAV4 forms part of the outgoing fifth generation. Is the Toyota RAV4 changing in 2026? The Latest Ford Maverick Just Got Recalled Over The Smallest Issue

Ford's Quality Issues Hit The Smallest Components Not a week will go by without one of the world's major automakers suffering a recall of some sort – that's just the nature of mass production – but Ford may be, once again, having a harder time than most. The Blue Oval has just announced a new recall for the compact Maverick pickup, affecting 63,898 vehicles. The root of the problem lies in retaining clips for the airbag indicator light, which 'may be loose or dislodged,' according to the NHTSA recall documents. Fortunately (or unfortunately, if you're affected), the recall only extends to 2025 Maverick trucks; if earlier models were also affected, we'd be talking about a six-figure recall. Source: Ford The Remedy Is Simple, But Ford's Recalls Are Still Regular Ford will notify owners via mail by Monday, June 9, 2025. However, that's only to let them know about the recall. A second letter will be mailed once the remedy is available, which means Ford is still working on a fix, or at least, it doesn't have the new retaining clips in dealer inventory yet. Regardless, the fix won't cost owners anything. It should be noted that this recall shows no signs of arresting or otherwise affecting the actual airbag system, so the truck should still be safe to drive. Recall number 25C17 refers, if you want to know more. While this is certainly a minor issue, it's one of many that has affected Ford of late. Nearly 1.1 million vehicles were affected by a rearview camera issue this week, and 1.3 million F-150s with potentially faulty transmissions were recalled a little more than two months ago, with several others in between. But from a certain perspective, these big numbers are a good thing. Compared To The Competition, Ford Is Still Selling Big Let's look at other recent recalls for a bit of context. Stellantis recently recalled nearly 49,000 Alfa Romeo Tonales and Dodge Hornets over a backup camera issue. That's 49,000 units across two brands, with the former starting around $38,000 and the latter around $30,000. The Maverick is even cheaper at $28,145 before destination and handling, and that's remarkable. This isn't a jointly developed crossover; it's an all-Ford pickup, yet it's cheaper, and a small, understandable oversight in quality control for its latest 2025 model still affected roughly 15,000 more vehicles than the abovementioned Stellantis recall, despite that issue concerning 2023-2025 Tonales and Hornets. Basically, what we're saying is, Ford's big recall numbers are just proof that it still sells a ton of vehicles that Americans love in numerous segments, so from that point of view, the recalls that the manufacturing industry will always face are something of a badge of honor for Ford. In fact, Ford sales surged 16% last month as buyers try to avoid potential future price hikes from tariffs, so America still loves the Blue Oval, despite the occasional lapse in quality.
