Talking Bird Obsessed With Quoting Scripture Wins Pet of the Week

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This week's pet stories included incredible rescues of baby foxes and dogs, as well as unexpected animals befriending each other at an aquarium. But these viral stories aren't the only ones that captured our attention. Thanks to our readers' emails with videos and pictures of their pets, we have another roundup for our Newsweek Pet of the Week lineup. Don't forget; follow the instructions at the end of this story to submit your furbabies for our Pet of the Week. Winner A photo of Sonny, a 2-year-old parakeet, who loves quoting scripture the owners taught him. A photo of Sonny, a 2-year-old parakeet, who loves quoting scripture the owners taught him. Cindy Drake A nonstop talking bird touched our hearts, earning himself the title of Newsweek's Pet of the Week. Cindy Drake and her family taught this nearly 2-year-old Indian ringneck parakeet named Sonny scripture passages, she told Newsweek via email. Unexpectedly, he's been taking it upon himself to continue quoting verses, stepping into the role of a preacher. "He talks every day and especially loves to say 'Hallelujah, praise the Lord, Amen,'" Drake said. But Sonny doesn't stop at just quoting the Bible. Drake said he also loves saying "Good morning, Sunshine," and "What's up, Buttercup?" Finalists A photo of an owner's cats, Pepper and Rocky, who remind her of her dad who passed in October. A photo of an owner's cats, Pepper and Rocky, who remind her of her dad who passed in October. Brenda Tucker Leonard Brenda Tucker Leonard's father has always been an animal lover. He would befriend the stray cats in the neighborhood and owned a few himself. And at 90, he wanted to own one more kitten, she told Newsweek via email. He first owned Pepper, but the cat "chose" Tucker Leonard instead, which led to a friend whom he helped mentor in making jewelry with quahog shells, surprising him with a kitten of his own. He loved the kitten up until the end. After his passing in October, his daughter took in the kitten, Rocky. Now, the two cats are together, enjoying their best life with her and the dogs. These curious cats are energetic, curious and know their names. She loves them, especially as they're a daily reminder to her of her dad and his lifelong love of animals. Photos of a Gus, a 3-year-old chocolate cocker spaniel who snuck his way into his owner's lap. Photos of a Gus, a 3-year-old chocolate cocker spaniel who snuck his way into his owner's lap. Cindy Bigelow Next up, we have Gus, a 3-year-old chocolate cocker spaniel, who is "needy" for attention. He's always been curious and joyful. Cindy Bigelow shared a photo progression of Gus sneaking his way into her lap, which happens often. He can't get enough of being with his humans. It doesn't matter if they're sitting in the recliner, in the kitchen or bathroom, he'll cozy himself right up next to them. "In this photo, I was sitting with my legs crossed, and he felt he needed to see what I was doing," she told Newsweek via email. "So, he slowly pressed his face through the opening between my knee and leg." Photo of a dog named Stella watching over the turtle, Waffles, who was enjoying a soak in the pool. Monica Blons Last, but not least, we have a dog taking safety into her own paws after becoming concerned while a turtle enjoyed a soak in the pool. Monica Blons shared a photo of her dog, Stella, standing at the edge of the pop-up pool. The dog peered down with her nose right up against the turtle's back. The turtle, Waffles, was sitting calmly in the water, but Stella didn't want to put anything to chance as the "lifeguard" of the pool. If you think your pet could be next week's Newsweek "Pet of the Week," send us your funny and heartwarming videos and pictures of your pet, along with a bit about them to life@ and they could appear in our "Pet of the Week" lineup.

'Love Island USA' Season 7: The biggest news the cast missed while in the villa

While the contestants on "Love Island USA" form romantic connections in the Fijian villa, they are not aware of the happenings in the outside world. The first episode of Season 7 of Peacock's popular reality dating series premiered on June 3 and since then, the remaining cast members have not had access to their personal phones, a proper clock, social media, or television. They will exit the villa following the finale slated for Sunday, July 13. Here is a round-up of news and pop culture moments that have occurred since the islanders entered the villa. 'Love Island USA' Season 7 cast: See every islander so far 'Cowboy Carter' tour viral moments Beyoncé may have kicked off her nine-city "Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour" in late April, but some of the most viral moments from the show occurred while they were in the villa. During Bey's shows in Paris, she surprised fans with an epic duet with Miley Cyrus, performing their hit, "II Most Wanted." She also stunned the crowd when she brought out Jay Z during night 3. The duo performed "Crazy in Love," "Drunk in Love," and the hip hop giant hyped the audience with "N***as in Paris." At her first date in Houston, Beyoncé powered through a major technical difficulty when her red car started tilting mid-air while she was singing "16 Carriages." The "American Requiem" singer ultimately told her crew to stop before they lowered her down. She later joked with the crowd, 'if I ever fall, I know y'all will catch me,' and poked more fun at the incident in an Instagram post by sharing a video montage with the song "Sittin' Sidewayz." A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) The final season of Netflix's 'Squid Game' On June 27, Netflix released the third and final season of "Squid Game," the most-watched series on the streaming platform. The viral dystopic show, which centers around main character Seong Gi-hun or Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), has delighted fans since its 2021 premiere, combining classic thriller elements with a deeper exploration of the human capacity for evil and the perils of an unequal society. In Season 3, according to Netflix, "Gi-hun is at his lowest point yet, the Squid Game stops for no one. So Gi-hun will be forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone's resolve." Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial outcome All eyes were on the jury's decision in the bombshell Sean "Diddy" Combs two-month long sex crimes trial, which included witness testimony from former assistants, ex-girlfriend singer Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine, and rapper Kid Cudi. Earlier this month, on July 2, the 55-year-old music mogul was convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of two counts of sex trafficking as well as the top charge, racketeering. Combs' sentencing date is scheduled for October 3. He faces a maximum of 10 years each for both transportation to engage in prostitution charges. NBA finals, NBA championship The NBA finals started on June 5 and ended on June 22 when the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers 103 to 91 to clinch the 2025 NBA championship. And, following the success and virality of "Love Island USA" Season 6, the latest season attracted a boatload of new fans, including men who were not previously interested in the show. Throughout the series, fans jokingly shared on social media how their boyfriends and husbands preferred to tune into the reality show over the 2025 NBA finals. "As a man choosing between the NBA Finals and Love can watch the finals later, turn on 'Love Island'," one person said in a TikTok video. Snack Wrap makes a comeback at McDonald's The Snack Wrap is back! The popular menu item was initially phased out in 2016, but it "never left fans' hearts," McDonald's stated. Now starting July 10, fast food lovers could buy the item, which comes in two flavors: The Spicy Snack Wrap and The Ranch Snack Wrap . The Snack Wrap is available a la carte or as a combo meal, which includes two Snack Wraps, a medium fry and a drink of choice. The item costs $2.99 a la carte. Serious events the 'Love Island' cast missed Here's a list of some more serious news that made headlines while the islanders were away. Girl Confronts Parents Are Learning Secret They Were Hiding: 'How Dare You'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A married couple took a solo trip away without their kids, only for their daughter to outrageously present them with evidence weeks later. Nayeli Tirado, 33, an educator and content creator, lives in Yuma, Arizona, with her husband Orlando, 36, and their two children: Emma, six, and five-month-old Luca. Recently, Tirado and her husband embarked on an adults-only getaway, which she told Newsweek they "don't do often, but it was really special to have that one-on-one time as a couple." The couple hit Disneyland—somewhere they've been before with their children, Tirado describing it as "the Disney love runs deep" in their family. "We love going to Vegas, we love going wine tasting and little getaways like that too, but we also genuinely love Disneyland," she explained. "And we truly believe it can be enjoyed with children and without children; and both experiences, although very different, are magical in their own unique ways." Nayeli Tirado's daughter, Emma, with the 'no kids' Disney badges. Nayeli Tirado's daughter, Emma, with the 'no kids' Disney badges. Instagram @ While on their trip, they got special Disney badges which declared they were celebrating having "no kids" with them—and after their return, the badges were discovered by none other than their daughter Emma. "Her reaction was hilarious," Tirado said, clarifying their daughter knew about the solo trip and was presented with souvenirs on their return. "She found the pins a couple of weeks later in our 'Disneyland Box,' and since she recently started reading, she spotted the 'no kids'—that's when I pulled out my phone and caught her cute dramatic reaction." In a video shared to Tirado's Instagram account, @ in May, she recorded six-year-old Emma holding up the evidence to the camera, and repeatedly demanding: "How dare you?" Emma, wearing a Disney's Lilo & Stitch t-shirt, is smiling as she confronts her mother with the pins, and Tirado, too, can be heard laughing behind the camera. She wrote in the caption: "Hide the evidence better, people!" Tirado said her daughter "has such a great sense of humor, and her ability to catch on to sarcasm and joke about things like that is one of my favorite things about her." Viewers had a huge reaction, awarding the video close to half a million likes, as one commenter joked: "As a bartender that works at Disney World, I pour extra heavy when I see pins like this." Another shared that she and her husband had day passes to Disneyland, and would go on "day dates" while "the kids were in school." Some were outraged on Emma's behalf, as one wrote: "I couldn't fathom my husband and I going to Disney without our kids. That's so weird to me I wouldn't even have a good time," and another said: "I think it's weird when grown-ups go to Disney without children." Read more 3-year-oId wants to go to Disneyland for birthday, parents did one better 3-year-oId wants to go to Disneyland for birthday, parents did one better But another admitted the only thing that annoyed her about the video was "my husband and I never thought to get one of those pins on our trips with no kids." Responding to the criticism, Tirado said they believe "it's healthy for adults in general to take little breaks when possible, even if it's to a place as magical as Disney. For parents, a little recharge goes a long way for the whole family." She added that they live relatively close to the theme park, "so going often, and even occasionally without the kids, doesn't feel strange to us," but understood that it might have appeared odd to people to whom a Disney trip means flights, detailed planning, and long hotel stays. In 2023, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, was the most visited theme park in the world, with 17.72 million visitors. Anaheim, California's Disneyland, where Tirado's family regularly visits, was second—coming in at 17.25 annual visitors, according to Statista. And, Tirado revealed, she and her husband had a surprise trip to Disney planned for their daughter just weeks later. To celebrate her graduating from kindergarten, they pretended they were taking her to school, only to reveal they were on the way to the theme park instead. "It was such a heartfelt moment, and seeing her reaction was everything," proud mom Tirado said. "At the end of the day, we believe it's healthy for parents to have alone time and to occasionally do the things they enjoyed before having children without feeling guilty about it. We believe that when parents take care of themselves, they show up even better for their families. "And if you're someone who grew up going to Disney and find comfort in that place, it's okay to come back and reminisce." Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures you want to share?
