Thomas Clarkson the latest Irish player called up by Lions
The Lions have confirmed that the tighthead prop is to join the squad as cover ahead of the first Test against the Wallabies on Saturday.
Clarkson, who made his eighth Ireland appearance in last night's 106-7 win against Portugal, is now the eighteenth Irish player to be called up by head coach Andy Farrell, and fourteenth from Leinster.
The 25-year-old caps off a breakthrough season with a dream Lions call, having played 26 games for club and country, scoring three tries.
The Lions have not confirmed whether or not Clarkson's call-up is injury-related. Tadhg Furlong is favourite to start in Saturday's first Test, and was rested for yesterday's 48-0 win against the AUNZ XV, while Will Stuart and Finlay Bealham both appeared to come through that game unscathed.
With one more mid-week game to come against a First Nations and Pasifika XV on Tuesday 22 July, it's possible that Farrell wants to keep both of his Test tightheads on ice that week.
It's been a busy week of call-ups, with Clarkson the third player to be drafted in recent days.
England's Jamie George is currently in transit from Argentina after he was called up as cover for Luke Cowan-Dickie, who suffered a concussion in Saturday's win in Adelaide.
And Clarkson's Leinster team-mate Jamie Osborne has just arrived in Brisbane, having been called in as cover for both Blair Kinghorn and Garry Ringrose.

The Olympic Federation of Ireland last week named thirty-five athletes who will compete across eight sports in the the EYOF. The EYOF is the largest European multi-sport event for young athletes aged 14-17, typically held every two years. This year it takes place in Skopje, North Macedonia, and will run from July 20–27. This year's event will see forty-eight countries across Europe participate in the event, with over 4,000 athletes competing. Announcing the team, Olympic Federation of Ireland Chef de Mission for the EYOF, Gavin Noble said: 'The EYOF is a key milestone on the Olympic pathway, a chance for athletes to gain invaluable experience in a high-performance, multi-sport environment. This is a competitive and ambitious Team Ireland group, and while many are making their debut, they're ready to step up. We are delighted to include a few new sports to this year's programme, like Basketball 3×3, Table Tennis and Taekwondo, and look forward to supporting the whole team.' The Irish team departs for Skopje on July 18 with competition starting on July 20. GAA PALESTINE are 'outraged' after The Department of Justice failed to process visa applications for Palestinian kids that were due to travel to Ireland on Friday. A two-week tour of Ireland for 33 children aged between nine and 16, along with 14 adults has now been dashed because the West Bank group do not have the necessary documentation to travel. The group have lost a whopping €38,000 on flight tickets due to the fiasco, and GAA Palestine tonight voiced their immense frustration for all concerned. A statement said: 'GAA Palestine is profoundly disappointed and outraged by the Department of Justice's refusal to facilitate our upcoming team trip to Ireland scheduled for 18th July. 'Despite our numerous appeals and attempts to engage, the department has dismissed our concerns and provided an appeals process that guarantees the trip cannot proceed within the timeframe required. Harrington to start The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush
Two-time Champion Golfer of the Year Pádraig Harrington will hit the first tee shot at The 153rd Open to start the race for the Claret Jug. Harrington will follow in the footsteps of Darren Clarke, who hit the first shot at Royal Portrush six years ago, and the likes of Paul Lawrie, Matthew Jordan and Justin Leonard in recent years. The Irishman will be on the 1st tee at 6:35am on Thursday alongside two playing partners, with the rest of the draw to be announced at 2pm on Tuesday. Harrington is one of five Irish players in the field, with fellow Champion Golfers Clarke, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, and Tom McKibbin. He is also the last player to win the Claret Jug in successive years, after beating Sergio Garcia in a play-off to win The 136th Open at Carnoustie in 2007 and then overhauling Greg Norman to defend his title at Royal Birkdale a year later. A three-time major champion, Harrington also won the US PGA Championship in 2008 and was a member of six consecutive Ryder Cup teams between 1999 and 2010.
