Pentagon keeps a lid on Golden Dome

Politico7 hours ago
The Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville this week typically showcases the Pentagon's missile defense priorities. Organizers expect it will draw 7,300 attendees and 300 exhibitors this year, with Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen. Heath Collins among the headliners.
But Hegseth's public affairs office told organizers to keep Golden Dome off the agenda and muzzled government speakers — at least until a separate event on Thursday, according to event spokesperson Bob English.
'A lot of [attendees] are coming this year because of Golden Dome,' English said. 'Unfortunately, last week, [the Defense secretary's office] came out and said they don't want us talking about Golden Dome during the symposium.'
The Pentagon, when asked for comment, pointed to a July announcement about the creation of an office to oversee the missile shield's development. Officials provided no additional information.
Organizers described frantic days assessing the new rules' implications. 'There was confusion for about 48 hours about exactly what the policy was or what they intended us to do or not to do,' English said.
Officials will still have some conversations about Golden Dome, but in a more structured setting. The Missile Defense Agency posted a notice this week that it will brief industry in an unclassified session Thursday, laying out what threats the shield is meant to stop, what mix of defenses it may use and how the Pentagon wants to buy and build it.
But experts contend the conversation belongs in public.
'When it comes to Golden Dome, start talking,' said Tom Karako, a missile defense expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. 'There are good answers to these questions because the threat is profound. But there needs to be a lot more communication and persuasion.'
The fledgling initiative, launched by Trump soon after he returned to office, received $25 billion in the recently signed GOP megabill. Proponents envision a $175 billion program.
The Senate confirmed Gen. Mike Guetlein in July to lead the new Golden Dome office, which aims to unveil the system's architecture by mid-September and conduct the first integrated flight test in late 2028.

Several states consider redrawing congressional maps after Texas kicks off fight

Texas Republicans' push to redraw congressional maps to secure five more GOP seats in the U.S. House has kicked off a no-holds-barred battle between blue and red states, each threatening to redraw their own House seats. The process of changing congressional maps to ensure one party's victory over another — called gerrymandering — has typically been done more furtively, with parties fearing a backlash from voters wary of a rigged system. But President Donald Trump's call for Texas to blatantly redraw the maps to better ensure that Republicans retain control of the House in the 2026 elections has blown the lid off of the practice. Texas kicked it off, but Democrats fled the state Dozens of Democrats left Texas in a Hail Mary to halt a vote on redistricting, leaving the legislature without enough lawmakers present — called a quorum — to proceed. Democrats, who didn't show up for a second day Tuesday, wouldn't have the votes to stop the bill otherwise. In response, Gov. Gregg Abbott and fellow Republicans are threatening the Democrats who left with arrests, fines and removal from office. The state Attorney General Ken Paxton warned he could ask the courts to vacate their seats if they don't show up when the House convenes on Friday. Trump and Texas Sen. John Cornyn have also asked the FBI to get involved. Still, past efforts by Democrats to abscond and deny Republicans a quorum only delayed the passage of bills, but didn't quash them. Through it all, Abbott has been adamant that redrawing districts with political bias is legal. California Democrats propose retaliation In response to events in Texas, Democrats in California are considering a draft proposal to reshape their own district maps and cut away five Republican seats while securing more precarious seats already held by Democrats. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has been outspoken about wanting partisan redistricting if Texas moves ahead with its plans. Unlike Texas, however, California has an independent commission that handles redistricting after the census every decade, which is typically when districts are reshaped to account for population shifts. Any changes would first need the approval of state lawmakers and voters. Newsom said he'd call a special election in November for California residents to do just that. Missouri's governor under pressure from Trump The Trump administration wants Gov. Mike Kehoe to call a special legislative session for congressional redistricting in favor of Republicans. Kehoe has expressed interest in doing so, discussing it with Republican legislative leaders, but has not made a decision. Republicans now hold six of the state's eight U.S. House seats, and the GOP could pick up another by reshaping a Kansas City area district held by a Democrat. New York Democrats try to change state law New York, similar to California, has an independent commission that redistricts only after the census. Last week, state Democrats introduced legislation to allow mid-decade redistricting. Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said if Texas proceeds, 'we must do the same.' The proposal, however, would require an amendment to the state constitution, a change that would have to pass the legislature twice and be approved by voters. That means the soonest new maps could be in place would be for the 2028 elections. Wisconsin Democrats try a different tact While Republicans control the legislature in the battleground state, Democrats turned to the courts to try to force a redrawing of congressional district boundary lines before the 2026 midterms. A pair of lawsuits were filed in July after the liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court previously declined to hear challenges directly, without saying why. Maryland Democrats promise a response to Texas The House Majority leader, David Moon, a Democrat, says he will sponsor legislation to trigger redistricting in Maryland if Texas or any other state holds redistricting ahead of the census. Florida's governor hints at support for redistricting Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he was considering early redistricting and 'working through what that would look like.' Ohio must redraw its maps before the 2026 midterms That's because a law in the Republican-led state requires it before the 2026 midterm elections. The GOP holds 10 of its 15 House seats already, and could try to expand that edge. Indiana's governor will speak with the Vice President J.D. Vance Republican Gov. Mike Braun told reporters Tuesday that Vance will visit Indiana to discuss several matters, including redistricting in the solidly GOP state. Braun, who would have to call a special session to draw new maps, said he expects a 'broad conversation' with legislative leaders on the constitutionality of such a move and said no commitments have yet been made. 'It looks like it's going to happen across many Republican states,' Braun said in a video by WRTV in Indianapolis. ____

MAGA's next leader? Trump says Vance is 'most likely' to lead in 2028

"He's doing a great job, and he would probably be favored at this point," President Donald Trump said of Vice President JD Vance's chances in 2028. Is Vice President JD Vance the heir to President Donald Trump's MAGA movement? "Most likely," Trump said Aug. 5 while taking questions from reporters. Trump has been hesitant to delve too deeply into 2028 speculation, saying in the past that it's too soon to discuss who will lead the GOP after him. Asked by Fox News shortly after his election if Vance was his chosen successor, Trump said: "No, but he's very capable." "It's too early," he added. Trump again said Aug. 5 that it's "too early" to discuss Vance as his successor, but he acknowledged he has an edge as vice president. "He's doing a great job, and he would probably be favored at this point," Trump said. Trump has toyed with the idea of running for president again himself, despite the U.S. Constitution prohibiting him from seeking a third term. But the president said that while he'd like to run again, he is unlikely to. When asked in a CNBC interview whether he would "run again," Trump said, "No. Probably not." "Probably not," he said a second time with a laugh. Contributing: Francesca Chambers, USA TODAY

Fact Check: Unpacking rumor about Alabama Young Republican arrested on murder, sexual torture charges

Claim: An Alabama man who was a member of a Young Republicans group and a campaign chairman for a state senator was arrested on charges of sexual torture and murder. Rating: Context: Though social media posts about the case spread widely in summer 2025, the arrest occurred in March 2024. In early August 2025, rumors circulated online that an Alabama man who worked as campaign chairman for Republican state Sen. Tom Butler and was a member of the Madison County Young Republicans was arrested on charges of sexual torture and murder. The claim made the rounds across social media platforms such as Facebook (archived, archived) and X (archived, archived), with some users pointing to the rumor as apparent evidence of hypocrisy within the Republican Party. Snopes readers reached out as far back as February 2025 with questions about the alleged crime and the suspect's connection to the Alabama GOP. The rumor was true, although the arrest occurred more than a year before the social media posts spread in summer 2025. Local news media and other outlets such as People magazine covered the arrest of Kyle Haden Lewter in March 2024. Lewter's mug shot and arrest record are available to view on the Madison County Sheriff's Office website, at the time of this writing. According to multiple local news reports, authorities initially arrested Lewter on suspicion of murder in the death of 54-year-old Derek Franklin Walls, with the charges later updated to include sexual torture and sexual abuse using an inanimate object. Although there were some reports Walls was fatally shot, the Madison County Sheriff's Office posted a statement to Facebook (archived) on March 8, 2024, that said "the victim and offender knew each other and got into a physical altercation that resulted in the victim being injured. It appears he died as a result of those injuries." According to a court document and reporting by Huntsville, Alabama, TV news station WZDX, Lewter was admitted to an inpatient mental health facility in April 2024 for evaluation but was ultimately determined "'psychiatrically stable' to participate in court proceedings" in October 2024 and returned to jail to await trial. (District Court of Madison County, Alabama) As for Lewter's political affiliation, local news outlet WAFF reported, "Lewter is listed as a member of the Madison County Young Republicans according to its website. Lewter was also listed as a point of contact. He also was a campaign chairman for State Sen. Tom Butler." In a statement to the TV station, Butler said he was "speechless" and "saddened for all families involved." In addition, WZDX reported that Lewter "was elected chairman of the Madison County Young Republicans in February 2022 according to a cross-post between his personal and the organization's Facebook pages." Lewter's Facebook profile and the alleged posts have since been deleted and are unavailable on web archiving websites. An archived page on the Madison County Republican Party website captured in December 2023, months before Lewter's arrest, listed his name, phone number and email as the point of contact for the Madison County Young Republicans. It appears the Madison County Young Republicans rebranded following Lewter's arrest. As of this writing, the same webpage listed the group as the Rocket City Young Republicans, and the group's Facebook page shows it was created in May 2024. (Huntsville is known as "Rocket City" because of its "progressive industries in aerospace, defense and biotech," according to the city's website.) According to Alabama news website Madison County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brent Patterson said the criminal case was not tied to Lewter's political activity. "The factual circumstances of this death investigation are not related to any political activities that Mr. Lewter was engaged in," he told the site. Snopes reached out to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Madison County district attorney's office and Madison County Republican Party for comment on Lewter's case and his membership in the county's Young Republicans.
