Person with disability found dead in Manipur; Arambai Tengol members held
Residents took to the streets demanding action against Chesam Abdul Kadir's killers. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, who retaliated by throwing stones and using slingshots.
Police said Kadir went missing on June 10. Nine people, including six Arambai Tengol members, were arrested in the case and remanded in police custody until June 28. Police also seized five vehicles.
A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the arrested accused admitted that Kadir died while they 'questioned him' over an alleged theft attempt. 'They also confessed to burying his body near a riverbank.'
Yunus Khan of the Disabled Development Association of Manipur said Kadir was assaulted and killed mercilessly. 'He had a Unique Disability ID issued by the government and had a 65% disability. Disabled individuals are often discriminated against and falsely accused, which must be stopped.'
The murder came to light amid a series of arrests of Arambai Tenggol members as part of an ongoing crackdown in Manipur. On June 12 and 13, two Arambai Tenggol members were arrested for their alleged involvement in a June 9 mob attack that left additional police superintendent Wangkhomba Okramcha injured.
The arrest of five Arambai Tenggol members, including Kanan Singh, this month over their involvement in the ethnic violence in the state, triggered the latest wave of unrest in Manipur. Hundreds of protesters resorted to arson and threw stones at security forces as the news of the arrest broke.
The Arambai Tenggol demanded the immediate release of the five and announced a 10-day shutdown, which was called off four days later.
Kanan Singh was dismissed from the police force this year over his alleged involvement in smuggling weapons and looting armouries.
The authorities suspended broadband and mobile data services in Imphal East and West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur, saying some 'anti-social elements might use social media' to incite the public in the aftermath of Kanan Singh's arrest. A curfew was reimposed in Bishnupur for the first time this year. The movement of people in the valley districts was restricted due to apprehension of a breach of peace.
The protracted violence between Meiteis and Kukis in Manipur was triggered in May 2023 and has left around 250 people dead and thousands displaced. Meiteis live largely in the plains of the Imphal valley, and the Kukis in the hills. They have withdrawn to their respective strongholds. The groups have since 2023 set up road blockades on highways to restrict each other's and the movement of essential items between their strongholds. Kuki leaders have blamed Arambai Tenggol for the violence.

Thadou body claims leaders detained at Imphal hotel; Manipur cops deny
IMPHAL: Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), an apex body of the Thadou community in the state, on Thursday claimed that several leaders had been detained at an Imphal hotel where they had held a peace meeting with Meitei civil society organisations the previous day. Police said the TIM delegates were not detained or placed under house arrest (HT Photo) A senior police officer rejected the allegation, insisting that security personnel had been deployed at the hostel for the safety of TIM delegates. 'There is no detention or house arrest of the TIM delegates, the police personnel and central forces are deployed for safety reasons, considering the present unrest as the government cannot take a risk,' a senior police officer said The Thadou delegation was part of a 16-member team that had travelled to Imphal for the peace dialogue. Wednesday's meeting was seen as a step toward reconciliation between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities and involved key stakeholders, including the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), and other civil society groups. TIM president James Thadou said, 'The arrest and forced confinement of peaceful delegates is a clear violation of their democratic rights and liberty. It is a blatant attempt to suppress dissent and appease extremist forces in the valley.' In a statement on Wednesday, TIM said the 'Thadou' community had been long considered part of the larger Kuki umbrella, but were in fact a 'distinct indigenous identity'. 'The term Kuki has foreign origins, and those who adopt it today often do so to push a separatist and extremist ideology. Many who currently identify as Kuki are suspected illegal immigrants, having settled in Manipur in recent decades,' Thadou said James said they came to Imphal after the May 3 incident, despite pressure from many groups, to initiate a peace process and restore peace. The TIM urged the government to take immediate action. 'We urge the Government of India to lift all restrictions, release the detained leaders without delay, and demonstrate its sincerity in supporting indigenous peace-building,' the group said. 'Any undermining of this historic covenant must be avoided. It could have serious consequences for peace, stability, and trust among communities in Manipur,' the statement warned.

Two militants among four held in Manipur
Security forces arrested two arms smugglers and two militants belonging to proscribed outfits from Manipur's Imphal West and East districts, police said on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). A 41-year-old active cadre of the banned Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup was apprehended from his residence at Phumlou Keiroi Maning in Imphal West district on Tuesday (August 5), a senior officer said. The militant was involved in recruiting cadres for the outlawed organisation, he said. A 33-year-old member of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL) was also arrested from a rented house at Lamphel in Imphal West district on Tuesday for allegedly being involved in extortion activities, the officer said. Security forces apprehended two persons on Monday (August 4) from different locations in Imphal East district for their alleged involvement in the smuggling and sales of arms, he said. One 9 mm pistol and ammunition were recovered from their possession, the officer added. Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic strife between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The State Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. Parliament on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) approved a statutory resolution to extend the President's rule in Manipur for another six months beyond August 13. The resolution, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last week, was approved by the Rajya Sabha.
