Giants starter Robbie Ray retired the last 15 batters he faced in seven innings. Ray (7-1), trying to become the first eight-game winner this season, scattered two hits, walked three and struck out nine.

Scrutiny increased over Pete Rose's Baseball Hall of Fame eligibility once the former Cincinnati Reds star died last year, as President Donald Trump weighed in with his own thoughts on the issue. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred removed Rose, and several other players, from the ineligible list in May, allowing the possibility of those athletes being voted into the Hall of Fame. He admitted at a news conference owners meeting on Wednesday that Trump's support for Rose was one of the many factors that went into the decision. "The president was one of a number of voices that was supportive of the idea that this was the right decision," Manfred said. "Obviously, I have respect for the office and the advice that he gave I paid attention to, but I had a lot of other people that were weighing in on the topic, as well." Trump wrote on Truth Social in March that he planned to pardon Rose. He and Manfred met in April about Rose's Hall of Fame candidacy. "Major League Baseball didn't have the courage or decency to put the late, great, Pete Rose, also known as 'Charlie Hustle,' into the Baseball Hall of fame. Now he is dead, will never experience the thrill of being selected, even though he was a FAR BETTER PLAYER than most of those who made it, and can only be named posthumously. WHAT A SHAME!" the president wrote. "Anyway, over the next few weeks I will be signing a complete PARDON of Pete Rose, who shouldn't have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING. He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history, and won more games than anyone in sports history. Baseball, which is dying all over the place, should get off its fat, lazy a--, and elect Pete Rose, even though far too late, into the Baseball Hall of Fame!" Rose died last September at the age of 83 from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The effort to get Rose a plaque in Cooperstown took a step forward on May 13. "This issue has never been formally addressed by Major League Baseball, but an application filed by the family of Pete Rose has made it incumbent upon the Office of the Commissioner to reach a policy decision on this unprecedented issue in the modern era as Mr. Rose is the first person banned after the tenure of Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to die while still on the ineligible list. Commissioner Manfred has concluded that MLB's policy shall be that permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual," the MLB said. Rose admitted to gambling in 2004 after years of claiming his innocence. He died in September and predicted 10 days before his death he would not make the Hall of Fame until after he died, if at all. It was found that Rose gambled on the Reds, only to win, while he was both a manager and a player. Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle delves into OTAs vibe amid team's trade rumors Despite trade rumors swirling around two of Miami's best players, Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle sounded unfazed by all of it on Tuesday. "Pretty regular, everybody that's here is working," Waddle said of the vibe in Miami Gardens during OTAs. "We do know that it's a business and people be having different business things going on. We've been solid, keeping the main thing, the main thing, and just working, man." Along with seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith has been linked to trade talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers. As star receiver Tyreek Hill is still recovering from a surgical repair to his wrist, that injury recovery and Smith's potential trade situation has removed two key offensive weapons during OTAs. Waddle discussed how he approaches practices minus that duo. "I approach it as any other day. I don't think it really matters so much of who's on the field, who's not on the field. Just go out there and work man. Approach it, I'm trying to get better each and every day, trying to make the other side better each and every day. It's not really a different approach. I think our just overall offensive approach this offseason has been pretty good," Waddle said. Waddle is coming off a 2024 season where he finished with career-lows in catches (58), yards (744) and touchdowns (2). The 2021 first-round NFL draft pick out of Alabama signed a three-year, $84.75 million contract extension ahead of last season. But, given how last season played out for both the Dolphins as a team and for Waddle individually, it's not surprising to see him locked in regardless of what contract and trade situations might be unfolding around him.

Wildfire smoke continues into the Pittsburgh region along with multiple storm chances
Thursday begins on a very warm and smoky note across most of Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia. Wildfire smoke and haze have mixed down to this surface, resulting in code yellow to code orange air quality, meaning that the condition of the air is unhealthy for those with any underlying health conditions. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos This wildfire smoke and haze will continue to be in place across our area through 2-3 p.m. this afternoon before thunderstorms develop. The outflow winds from these thunderstorms should finally help to stir up the atmosphere a bit and mix out the smoke. Severe weather chances over the next three days KDKA Weather Center Ahead of the storms, high temperatures will easily reach the low to mid-80s, which is a few degrees above normal for this time of year. Speaking of storms, the SPC has most of our area in a level 1 out of 5 severe risk for today and tomorrow. Storms should form in the increasingly moist air ahead of a cold front and a weak disturbance moving in from the northwest. We should see development around 3 p.m. Thursday, with the highest coverage generally in our northwest zones, although some models suggest there could be simultaneous development in the Laurel Highlands and Ridges as well. Initially, coverage will be isolated, but as storm tops collapse and weaken, this may spawn new development in different areas. Low temperatures and rain chances on Thursday evening KDKA Weather Center Storm coverage should diminish after 8-9 p.m. with only scattered showers overnight, but another disturbance moving in during the mid-morning hours of Friday will likely re-ignite storms during the midday and afternoon hours. There will not be a ton of wind shear today and tomorrow, so these will be more pulse-like, disorganized storms with a localized "microburst" wind threat along with hail. Winds could gust upwards of 60-70mph in isolated spots along with pea to quarter-sized hail. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center The cold front will eventually sag south into the region by early Saturday with a chance of early morning showers. Most of Saturday into Saturday night is trending drier as we will be in between systems. On Sunday, moisture will return north ahead of a strong low system and cold front poised to arrive on Monday. We could see storm chances increase as early as Sunday afternoon, with the higher chances moving in on Monday. This system will have much stronger winds aloft accompanied by sufficient moisture and some instability, so we will need to keep an eye on the severe weather threat with next Monday's system.
