Maria Chin Case: Syariah Court Acts In Line With Malaysia's Legal Framework - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The Federal Court's decision to dismiss former Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah's appeal affirmed the legitimacy of the Syariah High Court's show-cause order for contempt, in line with Malaysia's legal framework.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the filing of a judicial review against the Syariah High Court proceedings constituted an attempt to interfere with the lawful functioning of the judiciary, which the Federal Court had now firmly rejected.
He said that Article 121(1A) of the Federal Constitution clearly establishes the separation of jurisdiction between civil and Syariah courts, meaning Syariah court decisions cannot be retried or challenged in civil courts.
'This is because Syariah courts have their own jurisdiction conferred legally.
'Any attempt to allow civil court intervention in Syariah court decisions goes against the spirit of the Constitution and threatens the stability of Malaysia's dual legal system, which is a unique feature of our legal framework,' he said.
Mohd Na'im also urged all parties to respect the authority of both the Federal Court and the Syariah High Court as sovereign judicial institutions.
'The civil and Syariah courts should be seen as complementary rather than competing institutions, both with the shared goal of upholding justice and truth within the country's legal framework,' he remarked.
The minister also called on the public and political actors to avoid politicising the decision, and instead to reinforce a collective commitment to the rule of law and the harmony of the dual legal system.
'As the minister responsible for Islamic affairs, I remain committed to upholding the stature and integrity of the Syariah courts so they continue to be respected, trusted, and credible, preserving the integrity of a just and constitutional Islamic judicial system,' he added.

Japan Reiterates That Higher US Auto Tariffs Are Unacceptable
FILE PHOTO: Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa speaks to the press upon his arrival at Haneda Airport, a day after ministerial talks on tariffs, with U.S. President Donald Trump joining the negotiators, in Tokyo, Japan, April 18, 2025. REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo TOKYO, June 26 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Japan's chief negotiator on Thursday set off for another round of tariff negotiations with the United States (US), reiterating before his departure that the 25 per cent additional auto tariffs imposed by Washington remain unacceptable, Kyodo News Agency reported. Minister in charge of economic and fiscal policy Ryosei Akazawa said he still hopes to convince the United States to review the duty, especially as the 90-day pause on part of the so-called reciprocal tariffs imposed on Japan and other countries expires on July 9. The auto tariffs are "not something we can accept," Akazawa told reporters at Tokyo's Haneda Airport before leaving for Washington, referring to import taxes that have weighed heavily on Japan's large automotive industry. bootstrap slideshow The seventh round of ministerial-level tariff negotiations this week are likely to involve US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, as previous rounds have. The auto tariffs have been the key sticking point in the bilateral negotiations that began in April. The latest visit is Akazawa's first since Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was unable to strike an agreement with US President Donald Trump over the tariffs at their summit on June 16 in Canada. The leaders agreed to have talks continue at the ministerial level. In addition to increasing the tariff rate for passenger cars to 27.5 per cent from 2.5 per cent, the Trump administration raised other sector-based and country-specific duties, in a bid to reduce the trade deficit with Japan, which Trump says primarily results from "unfair" trade practices. Under the reciprocal tariff regime, combined with a baseline rate of 10 per cent covering nearly all goods imported by the United States, Japan faces an additional country-specific tariff of 14 per cent, for a total rate of 24 per cent. To facilitate negotiations, Trump paused tariffs set above 10 per cent for 60 trading partners, including Japan, for 90 days. -- BERNAMA-KYODO

Efforts To Strengthen Religious Institutions Must Remain A Priority
SEREMBAN, June 26 (Bernama) -- The Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, has ordered that efforts to strengthen religious institutions and enhance the efficiency of Islamic administrative law enforcement in the state must continue to be prioritised. His Royal Highness stated that religious issues must be referred to religious authorities and should not be interpreted by individuals or groups, as doing so could lead to confusion, tension, and conflict within society. 'I fully support all initiatives aimed at upholding the sovereignty of Islam. 'I believe the Menteri Besar and the state administrative machinery will carry out their responsibilities with determination and dedication to ensure that the agenda of unity among the people of this state is effectively implemented,' His Royal Highness said in the royal address in conjunction with the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447 celebrations at Masjid Negeri here today. Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, and their sons, Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin and Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin were also in attendance. Tuanku Muhriz also stressed that while Islam holds a special position in the country, its sanctity must be upheld without compromising the rights and fairness of the practice of other religions. The Negeri Sembilan Ruler stated that just as the Hijrah (migration) marked the exaltation of Islam's dignity and civilisation, the society too must embark on its form of migration by striving to improve moral character, sincerity, and diligence in daily life, following Islamic teachings. 'In essence, Hijrah begins within each individual. A renewal of attitude grounded in noble and virtuous values is the foundation for building a more dignified society and a more excellent nation. This emphasis must also begin at home, through religious upbringing, love, and the exemplary conduct of parents,' His Royal Highness said. Tuanku Muhriz said the transformation process becomes more meaningful when guided by knowledge, as it allows individuals to understand the wisdom behind religious commandments, discern right from wrong, and make wise decisions when choosing the correct path in life.

Strengthen your faith and remain united, Sultan Sharafuddin tells Muslims
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is urging all Muslims to strengthen their faith and unity as they usher in the Islamic new year. In a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, Sultan Sharafuddin called on Muslims, especially in Selangor, to instil self-improvement and a deeper connection with God, highlighting Maal Hijrah as a symbol of faith, sacrifice and unity. "The new year is a time for reflection. We must ask ourselves if we have been just, sincere and honest in our roles as God's servants," said the Sultan, encouraging Muslims to renew their commitment to compassion and brotherhood. Addressing global unrest, Sultan Sharafuddin urged an end to division over opposing views. "Islam teaches us that strength comes from unity, not division," the Sultan said, cautioning against hatred and revenge that threaten harmony. His Royal Highness also expressed concern about the rise in defamatory statements and insults, which contradict Islamic teachings. "Guard your tongue – it can be sharper than a sword," he said. The Sultan also cautioned against arrogance, emphasising humility as true strength before God. "Do not let arrogance mar sincerity in our struggles," said Sultan Sharafuddin.
