Will provide aid to families of temple stampede victims: Goa CM

Hindustan Times03-05-2025

Panaji: The state government will provide financial assistance to the families of those who died or were injured, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Saturday after visiting the Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, north Goa, where at least six people were killed and 70 others injured in a stampede during the annual Jatra pilgrimage festival on Friday night.
Cancelling all state functions as a mark of respect to the killed, Sawant said, 'I have ordered an inquiry into the entire incident. We will publish the inquiry report once it is out. The state government will offer financial assistance to the families of those dead and injured. The local MLAs will personally visit the families of those who have died in this tragedy.'
Jatra, held in honour of Sri Lairai Devi, is attended by thousands of devotees known as Dhonds, who circle a fire pit (homkhund) and walk over the burning hot coals. The event also draws lakhs of devotees and onlookers who gather to witness the spectators.
'We will be taking precautions to ensure that such an incident does not happen again. This is the first such instance in Goa in recent memory and should not repeat again. Once the report is out and its recommendations will be pursued in all seriousness. What shouldn't have happened, has happened,' Sawant said.
Police said the injured devotees were taken to Asilo district hospital in Mapusa, north Goa, by ambulances, police vehicles, and private cars. Critically injured patients were later referred to Goa Medical College and Hospital.

In an update, health minister Vishwajit Rane said a total of 74 people were admitted to various government facilities, of whom only 22 remain hospitalised.
'As per the latest reports, a total of 75 patients have been attended to across government health care facilities, including Asilo Hospital (Mapusa), CHC (community health centre) Bicholim, CHC Sankhali, and Goa Medical College (GMC). Currently, 22 patients are undergoing treatment: Asilo Hospital is treating 18 patients, CHC Bicholim has 3 patients under observation, and CHC Sankhali is monitoring 1 patient. Sadly, 6 individuals were brought in dead — 4 at Asilo Hospital (2 males and 2 females), and 2 at CHC Bicholim,' Rane said, adding, 'Of these, 8 critical patients, including 2 intubated cases, have been referred to GMC for super speciality care; 8 are admitted at Asilo,' Rane said.
The police have identified Aditya Kavthankar (17), Tanuja Kauthankar (52), Yashwant Kerkar (40), Pratibha Kalangutkar, Surya Mayekar and Sagar Nandarge.
'Additional doctors have been deployed, and a dedicated intensive care unit has been set up to provide focused care. All necessary arrangements have been made, and we are closely monitoring the condition of each patient,' Rane added.
According to eyewitnesses the chaos began after a scuffle broke out between the devotees.
The temple is reportedly accessible only by a narrow road used for both entry and exit, a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
'The road is lined on both sides by shops including temporary stalls that were installed on account of the Jatra. We had separated the Dhonds, who were lining up for darshan and the public who were moving to and from the temple. But, a scuffle broke out among the Dhonds along the narrow stretch of road that is incline, after which people fell over each other and were crushed,' he said.
President of the temple committee Dinanath Gaonkar said, 'There was pushing and shoving among the Dhonds. One of the Dhond's staff touched a loose electric cable, causing a bulb to break. There were sparks, and in the melee, innocent people lost their lives.'
'It is the responsibility of the dhonds and of the public to maintain a sense of duty. It is not right to criticize the government. The government has given us full support. This happened among the dhonds and on account of their fault,' Gaonkar added.
CM Sawant said, 'Whatever precautions need to be taken in consultation with the PWD, the local panchayat and the temple committee will be taken before the next Jatra. I request people to cooperate and assist the government.'

Project Parivartan to reduce hospital acquired infections: Health min

Panaji: A four-year project named Project Parivartan, aiming to reduce hospital-acquired infections and curb antimicrobial resistance, is being implemented in all 41 public health facilities, health minister Vishwajit Rane said on Wednesday. He held a detailed review meeting with representatives of Pfizer India, Americares India Foundation, the GMC dean, the director of DHS, and other senior representatives to assess the progress of the project. The strategically designed intervention to address the growing threat of AMR and hospital-acquired infections is being implemented by GMC and the directorate of health services in partnership with Americares India Foundation and supported by Pfizer's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. 'Project Parivartan will help drive safer healthcare practices, improving patient outcomes and public health,' Rane said. The project was launched on Nov 27 last year, and a team of 19 professionals were trained. Stakeholder engagement meetings were held with officials from GMC, DHS, and the hospital infection prevention and control committee at GMC. Project Parivartan is constructing a robust statewide framework for antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention control, with its core mission to reduce hospital-acquired infections and ensure the responsible and judicious use of antibiotics within Goa's healthcare system. It is also conducting baseline assessments to understand the current AMR situation in Goa and establishing surveillance tools to monitor trends in antibiotic resistance. Under the project, specialised training programmes are being delivered for healthcare professionals on AMS and IPC. The project is also looking at enhancing the capacity of medical teams to create a safer healthcare environment and promote rational antibiotic prescribing. The WHO recognised AMR as one of the top global public health and development threats. The Union govt implemented measures to curb AMR, establishing a national task force in 2010 and developing a national policy on AMR containment in 2011, followed by a national action plan on AMR (2017-2021). State govt has aligned both with India's national action plan and WHO's global AMR containment strategy through Project Parivartan, Rane said.

15 Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi workers arrested for vandalising private hospital & threatening staff in Sangli

Kolhapur: A group of roughly 15 people associated with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi forcibly entered a private hospital in Sangli, and vandalised the property and assaulted staff members on Monday. The Sangli police have filed charges against the vandals and have arrested them. Aaditya Hospital, the medical facility that was targeted, is run by surgeon Sharad Sawant. The VBA workers claimed the hospital was charging fees from economically weak patients while simultaneously receiving govt compensation through the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana. They also accused the hospital of providing substandard treatment to patients under the govt scheme. Sawant, however, rejected these accusations, claiming that certain local elements were attempting to force the hospital's closure. "We never charge a penny from the poor patients. There is a rule to initiate treatment or surgery only after approval from the govt machinery. There have been times when we did not wait for the approvals, given the condition of the patients. We challenge those accusing us to present the facts with documents, and we will also present the facts if they have any doubts. Vandalism, attacking the staff, and threatening us is not the way," said Sawant. Sawant alerted police when the vandalism commenced. Police intervened and detained the vandals. "We have arrested 15 people associated with a political party. We have invoked sections 3 and 4 of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010," said inspector Sudhir Bhalerao, of the Vishrambaug police station.

Panchayats must identify TB patients, counsel them on regular treatment: CM

Panaji: A day after chief minister Pramod Sawant announced his govt's target of a tuberculosis-free Goa, he said on Saturday that panchayats should identify TB patients within their jurisdictions and ensure that they take regular medical treatment. He urged panchayat members and swayampurna mitras to start telephonic counselling with TB patients to make sure they take their regular medicines. 'Get their names from health centres and provide them with counselling,' he said. Sawant said that it's not difficult to make Goa TB-free. 'We have to make sure that they maintain a proper diet. TB patients who are alcoholic should stop drinking and smoking. Patients who follow this can fully be cured within six to nine months,' he said. As the monsoon hit the state early this year, Sawant said that panchayats should barricade and put up signboards to stop people from visiting waterfalls during the rains, to avoid any untoward incidents. He also urged public representatives to take precautions and visit construction sites to avoid the spread of vector-borne diseases. During an interaction with swayampurna mitras on disaster management, Sawant said that panchas and sarpanches should ensure that, in coordination with the panchayat, 'they clean the roadside to avoid water logging on roads'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo 'This will not damage the roads, and will reduce accidents,' he said. Sawant said that authorities should be active in flood-prone areas, and that everyone should work to provide quick service to the public in emergency situations. 'We have to take all precautions to avoid any disaster during the monsoon,' he said. He mentioned that in Goa, there are 150 amrit sarovars (ponds). 'We have to check whether those these are rejuvenated or not. We have to clean them well before the monsoon,' said Sawant. The chief minister also said that a mock drill was conducted to check preparedness in disaster situations. Sawant said that Goa was declared a fully literate state, and it could not have happened without the work of panchayats and swayampurna mitras.
