‘Ash' Review: Deep-Space Horrors
The high-concept sci-fi horror film 'Ash,' a hazy story about an amnesiac deep-space explorer who awakens to discover her entire crew was killed, is light on answers but heavy on style.
The movie begins with a staggered Riya (Eiza González) surveying the mutilated bodies on the cold minimalist floors and walls of her interstellar outpost. There is an unexplainable gash on her forehead and a robotic system alerting her to abnormal activity happening around her. She and her crew members arrived on this distant planet — a craggy world curtained by cobalt-blue shadows and white embers — in search of a potential new home for mankind, but found something far more sinister. If only she could remember what happened.
Though not as adventurous, 'Ash,' from the musician-turned-director Steven Ellison, known as Flying Lotus, conjures comparisons to 'Alien' and 'Mission to Mars.' Its futuristic science: a terraforming planet, celestial alignment, parasitic beings — is equally wonky. Because the fractal script doesn't aim to provide explanations, this film can be confusing. But that incomprehensibility is part of its aesthetically alluring package.
By applying psychedelic medical patches to her neck, Riya is able to channel gruesome memories in loud drips and booming drops, releasing a wave of scratchy, blurred frames recalling melted faces and stomach-churning scenes set to Flying Lotus's brooding score. When another voyager (Aaron Paul) arrives, this incites further questions whose revelations inspire a grisly third act freak-out; the mesmerizing barrage of gore makes for a memorable display.

Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg police agent, hunts down a hacker known only as the Puppet Master. But the hunt itself leaves her questioning her own place within the world, pondering identity and the makeup of life itself in a technologically fueled world. With Michael Mann's "Heat 2" in the works and a novelization just waiting for you dive into, now's the perfect time to put your body armor on and get the popcorn heated for this legendary heist flick. How could you pass up seeing its unforgettable shootout scene in UHD on your big screen? Plus, "Heat" is the perfect way to gear up the debut of GTA 6 next year. You can rattle off a multitude of war movies that might stick in your mind for months, but few match the brevity and horror that underpins "Black Hawk Down." I couldn't help myself after the mention of Polanski's "Chinatown" without dropping "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" in the mix. Rick Dalton, a Hollywood western legend, and Cliff Booth, his long-time on-screen body double, spend a lazy evening in the Hollywood hills when the fates of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate are forever altered at the hands of the Manson family. You don't often see shows in the mix when on the hunt for new DVDs, but I couldn't resist tossing in this incredible series written and directed by Craig Mazin. As someone who cancelled my Max subscription, I can attest to the need for a consistent re-watch of "Chernobyl," which showcases in great detail the events surrounding the explosion of Reactor 4 of the Ukrainian power plant. It's a harrowing tale of survivor, bravery, and conviction, one that saw the loss of so much life, but averted so much more disaster thanks to the folks who would save the entire planet from devastating radioactive consequences.

Terror Touches Down on 'Alien: Earth' Official Trailer
Summary Get ready for a new chapter of terror, as the Xenomorph finally comes to released the highly anticipated official trailer forAlien: Earth, the new sci-fi horror series that marks the first time the iconic franchise brings its terrifying creatures to our home planet. The series, created by Emmy winner Noah Hawley and executive produced byRidley Scott, is a prequel set in the year 2120, two years before the events of the original Alien film. The plot kicks off when the mysterious deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth. Its arrival unleashes mysterious, predatory life forms – including the infamous Xenomorph – onto a planet already grappling with a 'Corporate Era' dominated by five mega-corporations and the rise of advanced synthetics and 'hybrids.' The trailer introduces Sydney Chandler as Wendy, a 'hybrid' (a humanoid robot infused with human consciousness) and the first prototype from Prodigy Corporation, who finds herself face-to-face with humanity's greatest threat. The footage is packed with chilling visuals, hinting at claustrophobic ship hallways, intense encounters with various alien life forms (with one character ominously stating the ship 'collected five different life forms from the darkest corners of the universe,' and one being 'predatory,' suggesting even a Predator could appear), and the terrifying realization that the 'perfect organism' has arrived on Earth.
