March 16 - Jordan Poole swished a 35-foot, 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left to give the Washington Wizards a stunning 126-123 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night.
Poole had time to move closer but stopped well behind the 3-point line and hoisted the successful shot that gave the Eastern Conference-worst Wizards (15-51) a two-game season sweep of the Nuggets.
Alex Sarr scored a career-high 34 points for Washington, which is 6-4 over its last 10 games.
Poole and Kyshawn George scored 19 points apiece and Justin Champagnie had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Wizards.
It was a wild ending as George drilled a wide-open 3-pointer to give Washington a 123-121 lead with 10 seconds remaining. Denver's Jamal Murray hit a tying 15-footer with 5.3 seconds left before the final sequence.
Nikola Jokic had 40 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists for Denver (43-25). Jokic scored a career-high 56 points on Dec. 7 in the first meeting with Washington.
Murray added 24 points, seven assists and four steals and Russell Westbrook had 22 points and 11 assists for the Nuggets. Westbrook became the 21st player in NBA history to top 26,000 points. He finished the night with 26,013.
Michael Porter Jr. had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Denver.
Sarr hit a tying 3-pointer with 2:13 remaining and added two free throws 22 seconds later to give Washington a 118-116 lead.
Porter knocked down a corner trey to give Denver a one-point edge with 1:31 to play.
Poole hit a 12-footer to give Washington a 120-119 lead with 44.4 seconds to play.
Westbrook scored on an inbounds play to put Denver back ahead by one with 30.1 seconds left.
The Nuggets shot 50.5 percent from the field, including 12 of 34 from 3-point range.
The Wizards made 48.4 percent of their attempts and hit 19 of 45 from behind the arc.
Murray scored five straight points in the third quarter as the Nuggets took a 92-81 lead with 3:12 left. But Washington roared back with a 14-3 quarter-ending push. George drained a tying 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to tie it at 95.
Champagnie opened the fourth quarter with a trey to give the Wizards their first lead since 2-0.
Jokic scored 27 points in the first half to help the Nuggets hold a 72-63 lead at the break. Sarr had 24 in the half for the Wizards.

Nationals' bat-retrieving dog Bruce laps up pregame attention, makes MLB debut

The dog days of summer arrived Saturday at Nationals Park. Bruce, a 21-month-old Golden Retriever, fetched a bat during a ceremony before the Washington Nationals' game against the Miami Marlins as part of a Pups in the Park promotion. He retrieved bats the last two seasons with the Rochester Red Wings, Washington's Triple-A affiliate. Bruce, wearing a bandana with an ' MLB debut' patch he received when he arrived at the stadium, was presented a commemorative bat. He then took a circuitous route from the dugout toward first base after Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped the bat in foul territory before the bat dog collected his quarry to the delight of a crowd wowed by his work and enthusiasm. 'Look at this dog and try not to smile,' said Josh Snyder, Bruce's owner. 'He's great. He's goofy. I think he's the perfect candidate for Rochester, the Red Wings and now the Nationals.' Snyder, who wore a No. 25 Nationals jersey with 'Bruce' on the nameplate, said he drove through the night with Bruce and arrived in Washington around 3 a.m. Saturday. But it was anything but a rough morning and early afternoon for Bruce, who casually lapped up attention as he walked through the tunnel in the stadium. Bruce spent about 50 minutes on the field before the ceremony, where he was hounded by well-wishers. He also did a couple practice bat retrievals with Snyder's assistance before Nationals catcher Riley Adams stopped to pet him on his way out for pregame work. He won't work during the actual game, however, and will return to Triple-A duties afterward. Bruce is Snyder's second dog work to with the Red Wings, following the late Milo, and both participated in campaigns to raise money for Rochester's Veterans Outreach Center and Honor Flight of Rochester. This week — which included an announcement from the Nationals on Tuesday that Bruce had worked his tail off to earn a promotion — generated plenty of buzz even before Saturday's debut. 'Social media, everything like that seems like it's seriously blown up, and we love it,' Snyder said. 'Really good publicity with our goal and our mission of bringing people together. It shows it's just doing that.' ___

On long night in D.C., Marlins hand Nats 6th straight loss

June 14 - Rookie Agustin Ramirez had three hits, including two solo home runs, and the Miami Marlins held on to beat the host Washington Nationals 11-9 on Friday in a game delayed more than two hours by rain in the fourth inning. For Miami, Dane Myers had three hits and two RBIs and Eric Wagaman had two hits and drove in three. James Wood had three hits, including a two-run home run, scored three runs and drove in four for Washington, which has lost six straight. CJ Abrams (three runs) and Keibert Ruiz each had three hits. The teams combined for 33 hits. Miami starter Edward Cabrera pitched three innings and left after colliding with Wagaman and Abrams on a play at first in the bottom of the third. Cabrera allowed two runs on two hits and struck out five. Tyler Phillips (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win and Calvin Faucher tossed a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Washington starter Mitchell Parker (4-7) allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. The Marlins took a 1-0 lead two batters into the game on Ramirez's first homer of the night. In the second, Miami loaded the bases with one out, but settled for one run on Nick Fortes' sacrifice fly. Ramirez led off a four-run third with another homer to left, his 10th of the season, and Miami's lead was 3-0. Otto Lopez singled and scored on Wagaman's double. After Connor Norby walked, Myers doubled home Wagaman and Norby to make it 6-0. In the bottom half, Abrams reached on an infield single after first baseman Wagaman collided with Cabrera at the bag. Abrams also made contact with Cabrera on the play. Wood followed with his 17th home run and the Nationals were within 6-2. Cabrera finished the inning but did not come out for the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth by Fortes and Xavier Edwards (three hits) made it 8-2. Robert Hassell III and Abrams singled leading off the seventh and Wood doubled them home. Nathaniel Lowe singled home Wood, then Luis Garcia Jr. reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Alex Call's single. Ruiz's single scored Josh Bell to bring Washington within a run at 8-7. Miami answered in the eighth, getting a two-run single from Wagaman to make it 10-7 and added a run on a fielder's choice. In the Washington eighth, Abrams scored on Lowe's groundout and Wood crossed the plate to make it 11-9 when Bell hit into a fielder's choice. --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS Knicks set to interview two head-coach candidates in major boost amid tough search for Tom Thibodeau replacement

The first formal interviews for the New York Knicks head-coaching vacancy have been revealed in former NBA head coaches Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown. Both men started last season as head coaches, with Brown being fired by the Sacramento Kings in December for having a losing record. Jenkins was given the pink slip by the Memphis Grizzlies with nine games left in the regular season in March. Jenkins and Brown will throw their name in the hat for the Knicks job less than two weeks after Tom Thibodeau was fired as the team's head coach following New York's Eastern Conference Finals defeat to the Indiana Pacers. Brown has been on an NBA sideline since 1997, spending time with several teams as a top assistant or as a head coach. Brown's most successful season as a head coach was in 2007, when he led a LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers team to the NBA Finals. Jenkins was the Grizzlies head coach from 2019 until a few months ago, leading the team to three playoff appearances but never past the second round.
