Nationals' bat-retrieving dog Bruce laps up pregame attention, makes MLB debut

Independent13 hours ago

The dog days of summer arrived Saturday at Nationals Park.
Bruce, a 21-month-old Golden Retriever, fetched a bat during a ceremony before the Washington Nationals' game against the Miami Marlins as part of a Pups in the Park promotion. He retrieved bats the last two seasons with the Rochester Red Wings, Washington's Triple-A affiliate.
Bruce, wearing a bandana with an ' MLB debut' patch he received when he arrived at the stadium, was presented a commemorative bat. He then took a circuitous route from the dugout toward first base after Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped the bat in foul territory before the bat dog collected his quarry to the delight of a crowd wowed by his work and enthusiasm.
'Look at this dog and try not to smile,' said Josh Snyder, Bruce's owner. 'He's great. He's goofy. I think he's the perfect candidate for Rochester, the Red Wings and now the Nationals.'
Snyder, who wore a No. 25 Nationals jersey with 'Bruce' on the nameplate, said he drove through the night with Bruce and arrived in Washington around 3 a.m. Saturday. But it was anything but a rough morning and early afternoon for Bruce, who casually lapped up attention as he walked through the tunnel in the stadium.
Bruce spent about 50 minutes on the field before the ceremony, where he was hounded by well-wishers. He also did a couple practice bat retrievals with Snyder's assistance before Nationals catcher Riley Adams stopped to pet him on his way out for pregame work.
He won't work during the actual game, however, and will return to Triple-A duties afterward.
Bruce is Snyder's second dog work to with the Red Wings, following the late Milo, and both participated in campaigns to raise money for Rochester's Veterans Outreach Center and Honor Flight of Rochester.
This week — which included an announcement from the Nationals on Tuesday that Bruce had worked his tail off to earn a promotion — generated plenty of buzz even before Saturday's debut.
'Social media, everything like that seems like it's seriously blown up, and we love it,' Snyder said. 'Really good publicity with our goal and our mission of bringing people together. It shows it's just doing that.'

MLB roundup: Down 4 in 9th, D-backs walk off Padres

June 15 - Josh Naylor drove in Geraldo Perdomo from third base with a chopping ground ball to first to cap a five-run ninth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for an 8-7 victory over the San Diego Padres in Phoenix on Saturday. Pavin Smith, Gabriel Moreno and Alek Thomas singled to open the ninth off Padres closer Robert Suarez (1-2), who entered in a non-save situation. After Corbin Carroll struck out, Ketel Marte beat out an infield single to shortstop on a play that was changed on a video review to make it 7-4. Perdomo, who had two hits, tripled into the right field corner to drive in three, bringing up Naylor. Eugenio Suarez had a three-run homer for the D-backs, who have won five in a row. Arizona starter Zac Gallen gave up six hits and was charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four. He leads the NL with 40 walks. Gavin Sheets had three hits including a homer, and Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each had two-run hits in a four-run San Diego seventh for a 5-3 lead, and the Padres tacked on two runs in their ninth for what appeared to be a safe cushion. Dodgers 11, Giants 5 Clayton Kershaw went seven scoreless innings and Shohei Ohtani hit a pair of home runs as Los Angeles rolled to a victory over visiting San Francisco. In his 61st career appearance against the Giants, and 59th start, Kershaw (2-0) allowed three hits with one walk. His five strikeouts moved him 12 away from becoming the 20th pitcher and fourth left-hander with 3,000. Giants right-hander Landen Roupp (4-5) was roughed up for six runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings, with a career-high five walks. Casey Schmitt hit a grand slam against position player Enrique Hernandez in the ninth inning as San Francisco lost for just the second time in its past 10 games. Reds 11, Tigers 1 Tyler Stephenson blasted a grand slam, Brady Singer tossed six strong innings, and visiting Cincinnati powered past Detroit. Matt McLain hit a three-run homer, while Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer also homered for the Reds. Singer (7-4) allowed one run and four hits while recording four strikeouts. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty (5-7) surrendered seven runs on five hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Wenceel Perez drove in the only run of the game for the Tigers. Cubs 2, Pirates 1 Matthew Boyd threw six quality innings and Dansby Swanson hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning to propel Chicago to a victory over visiting Pittsburgh. Boyd (6-3) allowed just one run on one hit -- Andrew McCutchen's solo homer in the first -- across six innings for the Cubs, who have taken two of three from the Pirates before the series finale on Sunday. Daniel Palencia notched his sixth save in seven tries this season. Pittsburgh rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed one run on five hits in his 5 1/3-inning stint, before Ryan Borucki (1-3) allowed Swanson's solo homer in the sixth. In just the fifth start of his career, Burrows struck out eight and walked none. Marlins 4, Nationals 3 Jesus Sanchez had two hits including a home run, Calvin Faucher retired James Wood with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, and Miami beat Washington. Liam Hicks and Dane Myers had two hits each for Miami, which has won three of its last four. Janson Junk (1-0) worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in a bullpen game, allowing two hits and striking out four. Faucher earned his seventh save. Abrams and Call had two hits each for Washington, which has lost seven straight. Trevor Williams (3-8) gave up two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Orioles 6, Angels 5 Cedric Mullins and Gary Sanchez, both fresh off the injured list, hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run sixth inning as host Baltimore defeated Los Angeles. Jordan Westburg drove in two runs and Adley Rutschman, Coby Mayo and Mullins all racked up two hits as eight Orioles had at least one hit. Keegan Akin was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Felix Bautista notched his 14th save by pitching the ninth. Luis Rengifo drilled two home runs and Mike Trout also homered for the Angels, while Taylor Ward picked up three hits and an RBI. Starter Tyler Anderson (2-4) was charged with six runs on nine hits in five-plus innings. Phillies 3, Blue Jays 2 Max Kepler hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Philadelphia went on to beat visiting Toronto. Kepler hit a 2-0 fastball by reliever Chad Green into the right field bleachers. Orion Kerkering picked up the win with a hitless inning in relief and Matt Strahm pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to garner his third save. Brandon Marsh had two hits for the Phillies, who won its third straight game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Ernie Clement added a double, a single and scored a run for the Blue Jays, who lost their second straight game. Rays 8, Mets 4 Junior Caminero homered to ignite a five-run fourth inning, while Taylor Walls doubled twice and knocked in two runs as visiting Tampa Bay stopped New York. Drew Rasmussen (6-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings, fanning three, as Tampa Bay won for the 17th time in 23 games. The Rays handed New York just its second series loss in 13 series this season at Citi Field and tied Toronto for the American League's top wild-card spot. Tylor Megill (5-5) surrendered seven hits and six runs, three earned, over 3 2/3 innings and 82 pitches. He walked two and struck out five, succumbing to Tampa Bay's second big inning in as many games. Astros 3, Twins 2 Rookie Cam Smith bounced a first-pitch, walk-off single into center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Houston topped Minnesota to secure the three-game series. Smith completed the rally started against Twins closer Jhoan Duran (4-2) by Christian Walker, who walked with one out, and extended by Jake Meyers' two-out single. Smith's hit made a winner out of closer Josh Hader (3-0), who struck out two in the top of the ninth. Yainer Diaz homered for Houston, while Brooks Lee went deep for Minnesota. Astros right-hander Hunter Brown, who struck out a career-high 12, and his counterpart with the Twins, right-hander Joe Ryan, engaged in a riveting pitchers' duel. Brown allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in seven innings, while Ryan allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Red Sox 4, Yankees 3 Hunter Dobbins threw six shutout innings to lead host Boston to a win over the New York Yankees. Dobbins (4-1) was dominant, allowing just two hits and walking one. He struck out five in 82 pitches. Greg Weissert gave up a run in the ninth but earned his second save. Rodon (8-5) gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and walked two in five-plus innings. He struck out four on 92 pitches. The left-hander had not lost in two months before losing 11-7 to the Red Sox in his previous start. Athletics 4, Royals 0 Jacob Lopez allowed three hits and struck out nine across six scoreless innings and Max Muncy clubbed a two-run homer as the visiting Athletics blanked Kansas City. Lawrence Butler also went deep, and Jacob Wilson recorded two hits to raise his average to .369. The A's took the first two of this set after losing 14 straight on the road. Lopez (1-4), making his seventh career start over three seasons, yielded two hits to Maikel Garcia, a Salvador Perez single and walked one for his second career quality start. The Royals' Michael Lorenzen (4-7) also recorded a quality start while lasting six innings, but gave up three runs, three walks and four hits. Kansas City has dropped five consecutive games and six consecutive series at home, recording only three wins in 16 outings. Braves 4, Rockies 1 Spencer Strider struck out a season-high 13 over six scoreless innings and Atlanta defeated Colorado for their third straight win. Strider (1-5) allowed three hits and walked one to earn his first victory since missing nearly all of the 2024 season with Tommy John surgery. Ronald Acuna Jr. went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs and to pace the offense. Chase Dollander (2-7) hurled six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Brenton Doyle's two-out RBI single in the ninth scored Hunter Goodman. Cardinals 8, Brewers 5 Nolan Gorman hit a three-run homer and Willson Contreras added a solo shot as visiting St. Louis snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over Milwaukee. Kyle Leahy (2-1) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Alec Burleson connected on two of the Cards' 10 hits and drove in the game's first run. Jose Quintana (4-2) yielded seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Sal Frelick was one of three Brewers to produce a pair of hits and he drove in a pair. Rangers 5, White Sox 4 (11 innings) Adolis Garcia ripped a two-out single to score pinch runner Evan Carter with the winning run, lifting host Texas to an extra-inning victory over reeling Chicago. The Rangers captured their third straight win and their sixth in their last seven outings. The White Sox, conversely, have dropped four straight. Jacob deGrom started for Texas and surrendered two runs over six innings. The Rangers then squandered one-run leads in both the eighth and ninth innings. Garcia's hit off Tyler Alexander (3-7) came after Texas wasted a bases-loaded opportunity with one out in the 10th and made a winner out of Jacob Latz (1-0), its sixth pitcher of the game. Chicago sent seven pitchers to the mound in a bullpen game. Mike Vasil started and went four scoreless innings. Mariners 4, Guardians 3 Jorge Polanco grounded a bases-loaded single into center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Seattle rallied to defeat visiting Cleveland. Dylan Moore raced home on a one-out wild pitch to tie the score. Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase struck out Julio Rodriguez before an intentional walk to Cal Raleigh re-loaded the bases. Polanco grounded a 1-1 cutter up the middle as the Mariners won for just the third time in their past 11 games. Jose Ramirez homered for the Guardians, who lost for the seventh time in their past nine. Clase blew his third save opportunity of the season. --Field Level Media

Empty seats, exhausted players, excess heat – the tournament that could embarrass Fifa

Judging by the stadium availability maps that present themselves on Fifa's official ticketing website for its Club World Cup, there may be many stadiums over the next few weeks in the United States where the crowds are massed in the stand that faces the cameras. Glance at the ticketing arrangements for some of the more problematic games for ticket sales, a pattern emerges. For Tuesday's collision of South Korea's Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, only tickets on two sides of the Inter&Co stadium in Orlando are available. Of the two greyed-out stands only the area immediately behind one of the goals is available for sale and the cheapest tickets are just $11 (£8). It may well be the same for Mexico's Liga-MX Pachuca against Red Bull Salzburg in Cincinnati on Wednesday, although the pattern is harder to read in that respect. There seem to be large parts of the vast MetLife Stadium in New Jersey that have also been retired for Thursday's game between Palmeiras of Brazil and the Egyptian club Al-Ahly, although time will tell. There were still tickets available for the opening game between Al-Ahly and Inter Miami at the latter's Hard Rock Stadium in the hours before kick-off. Just a few hours left until the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, and less than half the tickets are sold for the opening match. FIFA partnered with Miami Dade College after poor ticket sales. Every student who buys 1 ticket for $1 gets 4 extra tickets to help pack the stadium. — Cricket Business HQ (@cric_businessHQ) June 14, 2025 Of course, closing parts of a stadium to save on stewarding and concessions – and then pointing the cameras away – is an old trick that many sports deploy when ticket sales fail to meet expectations. Fifa's dynamic pricing model – a euphemism for wringing the most out of the paying fan – means that the price in some cases is starting to shift. There have been suggestions that Fifa has been obliged to refund part of the cost paid by some supporters who bought their tickets early, only for the price to fall dramatically. As of Saturday one could watch Bayern Munich play the amateur side Auckland City, from New Zealand, on Sunday for as little as $52 (£38) in Cincinnati. But if Bayern reach the final at the MetLife on July 13, the cheapest available ticket is currently $657.71 (£484.86) as a resale on the official site. The size of the crowds has the potential to be an embarrassment for Fifa in the early rounds of the competition at least. There are many ways, when it comes to the television coverage, that a skilful match director can conceal the swathes of empty seats but nothing that anyone can do to stop those attending the game posting pictures of empty seats on social media. The Fifa president Gianni Infantino insisted that his Club World Cup project was played in the bigger stadiums rather than those smaller stadiums in the next tier, many of which were MLS only. Fifa is not saying much when it comes to ticketing other than that its biggest ticket sales have been in the US, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Canada. The sales of tickets in Britain is only 11th on the list behind France, Japan, Germany, Portugal and Saudi Arabia. At a Fifa event last week, Infantino said he expected 'a full stadium' for the opening game between Miami and Al-Ahly, and doubtless efforts were made with discounts and other offers. It is a reminder that this is a tournament that has not been driven in any way by match-going fan demand. Instead the match-going fans have been retro-fitted around it. The tournament itself, as has been well trailed, is a political play by Infantino to make an incursion into the lucrative broadcast rights for the elite club game – by which one means Uefa and the Champions League primarily. The location and the suitability or otherwise for a global, international tournament has been largely incidental. It ended up in the US because of the proximity of next summer's Fifa men's World Cup but it was originally intended in 2021 for China. There may well be big attendances at some of the games, and perhaps the latter stages might even attract the kind of sell-out crowds of big venues like the MetLife of which Infantino has dreamed. But that is not why the tournament was conceived. There was no groundswell of opinion that the fans wanted a 32-team summer tournament that would settle the argument once and for all as to whether Mamelodi Sundowns were a better side than Ulsan HD, or indeed that there must be a world champion. At least not a world champion that took four weeks and 63 games to decide. There was none of the fascination that existed, for example, in the post-war years with the relative merits of one style of European club football over another, which led to the establishment of the European Cup. This was entirely confected to demonstrate that Fifa and its president could create a tournament that might rival the Champions League. One so totally out of kilter with the rhythm of club football that it needed someone to tell Fifa that players' contracts could conceivably expire midway through it unless they changed the rules. It has been an extraordinary demonstration of the power of a Fifa president – who has pushed it through regardless of legal challenge and widespread opposition. Ideally for Infantino most of the big European teams stay in it to the end as well as a selection of the South Americans. It may suit the streamer DAZN and all its sub-licensees if the European teams dominate but, for Infantino, it will look like an unnecessary re-run of the Champions League. The best chance that challengers from South America and elsewhere might have is the indifference of some of those European-based players after a long, hard season and the punishing temperatures of the eastern US in summer. Bad for the players, but good for business. That said, the shortest-priced non-European with the bookmakers is Brazilian club Flamengo at around 33-1, placed behind nine European clubs in terms of the favourites. Either way, come July 13, one would get very long odds on Infantino declaring it anything other than a huge triumph. It does not matter how many seats are empty, how tired some of the players look or whether the wealthiest European clubs dominate the final stages – or whether some flop in the US heat. Infantino has got his tournament and all else will be secondary to that.
