Rochester Red Wings celebrates Stroke Awareness Night with RRH
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A stroke survivor will throw the first pitch in honor of the Rochester Red Wings' collaboration with Rochester Regional Health for Stroke Awareness Night. Joe Crestuk was told by doctors he would likely never walk or have use of the right side of his body after suffering a stroke in the spring of 2024. After treatment with Rochester Regional Health providers, a year later, he is doing much better. Crestuk's family, friends, and members of his care team, including his surgeon, will also be in attendance at Saturday's game to celebrate the progress he has made. Their presence and support bring attention to the difference that early intervention, rehabilitation, and a strong support system can have for stroke survivors during recovery. Organizers said Crestuk's journey is 'an inspiration to many, demonstrating that recovery is possible even after a severe stroke.' The themed night is an evening of awareness and advocacy to conclude May as Stroke Awareness Month, providing the community with resources on risks and prevention for better health outcomes. Mets Make Major Pitching Announcement Before Impressive Win Over Red Sox
Barring a setback, former All-Star pitcher Paul Blackburn should rejoin the New York Mets within the next two weeks. The problem: it's not if Blackburn will face big-league hitters again, but when. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters this week that Blackburn would make at least one more rehab start before the club decided on a return date. Blackburn has spent the last month in the minors while recovering from a spring knee injury. Advertisement Blackburn seems ready to trade long bus rides for chartered flights. The 2022 AL All-Star threw seven scoreless innings against the Rochester Red Wings (the Minnesota Twins' Triple-A affiliate) on Wednesday night. Making his sixth rehab start and third with Syracuse, Blackburn allowed a single hit and struck out six over 87 pitches. Mendoza previously said he wanted Blackburn to throw at least 80 pitches. New York Mets starting pitcher Paul BlackburnDenis Poroy-Imagn Images Blackburn almost certainly met Mendoza's expectations, giving the second-year manager another reason to smile. The Mets ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. Advertisement Blackburn owns a 3.91 ERA and a 27-11 K-BB ratio in 23 rehab innings. Assuming the Mets use Blackburn as a starter, he'll have an early opportunity to put a frustrating 2024 campaign behind him. Blackburn went 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA across five starts and 24.1 innings following a July 30 trade with the Athletics. Foot and back problems limited Blackburn to only 75.1 innings last year, his fewest in three seasons. A 2012 first-round pick by the Chicago Cubs, Blackburn is 22-28 with a 4.85 ERA and 3.1 bWAR in 86 games. Mets' Ronny Mauricio homers in second straight Triple-A game, Paul Blackburn tosses seven scoreless innings
Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio continued his hot start in Triple-A, hitting a home run for the second straight game during Syracuse's 5-2 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday. The 24-year-old had two hits in his first game with Syracuse on Sunday and followed that up with a three-hit game on Tuesday, including his first home run of the season. Advertisement DH-ing on Wednesday, Mauricio hit the two-run homer on a 2-1 breaking ball with one out in the seventh inning, crushing it to right field. Mauricio finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks (one intentional). He also picked up a stolen base after being walked in the fifth inning -- it's his second stolen base in Triple-A. The infielder is now hitting .636 (7-for-11) over three Triple-A games, a big improvement from his rehab assignment with St. Lucie and Binghamton where he had just four hits over 10 games. Prior to being reinstated from the 10-day IL and sent to Triple-A on May 17, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Mauricio will stay in the minors "until we have a need." Advertisement Meanwhile, starter Paul Blackburn (knee) tossed seven scoreless innings in his sixth rehab start (third with Syracuse) as he works his way back to the majors. Blackburn allowed just one hit over 87 pitches, striking out six and walking two. It was by far his best rehab appearance this month, having let up nine earned runs over his previous four starts in May. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that the goal was for Blackburn to throw 80 pitches and if all goes well, the team will have to make a decision on what's next for him.
