REVIEW: Lego's Speed Champions F1, an adrenaline build
With Formula One fever revving up in South Africa, with a grand prix expected possibly in 2027, the country is lapping up racing merchandise, including Lego's Speed Champions F1 cars.
As a massive F1 fan, I was excited to hear of the partnership between F1 and Lego when it was unveiled in November 2024.

If you love to build, the Lego Speed Champions F1 cars will heighten your F1 fever and tenacity to be a kid again as excitement builds in South Africa for lineup of Red Bulls Max Verstappen, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Lando Norris on the starting grid.

The Lego Speed Champions feature F1 cars currently racing on the Formula One circuit and with a F1 Grand Prix possibly being held in South Africa in 2027, these racers are getting a lot of attention.,
Speed Champions basically puts racing car lovers in the driver's seat with realistic vehicle models from familiar racing competitors.

Build
I found the cars easy to build and not particularly challenging. If you work really fast, you can build the F1 car of your choice in 30 to 60 minutes.
Each set consists of six bags in total, with the build completed in three separate sections.
In addition, each set comes with a plethora of stickers which replicate the true F1 car as they are all covered in sponsors to help promote the team.
Small
While speed is the essence of F1 cars, no pun is intended when I say that the sets were a quick build and somewhat slightly faded the brain teaser of where the next part goes.
All 10 current F1 team constructors are represented. Individually, each car is not a big build. The Ferrari, for example, is just 275 pieces, while the Mercedes is 267. The cars themselves are also quite small, coming in at 20cm in length and only 8cm wide.
When you compare these measures to their Lego Technic counterparts, such as the McLaren Technic set, they are considerably smaller, which is a bit disappointing. However, this is particularly beneficial for storage reasons, as they take up less space on the shelf, allowing for more room for Lego.
Availability and pricing
Although I have only experienced three of the 10 builds, these sets are a must for every F1 fan, albeit some very minor issues including under-detailed racing suit and the price is a bit high, but the high level of detail goes some way to justify the asking price.
Lego's Speed Champions F1 cars include Ferrari, Mercedes, Alpine, Williams, Haas, McLaren, Aston Martin, Red Bull, Sauber and Visa Cash RB. They retail for R499 each.

Aston Martin F1 Realme smartphone lands in SA

The smartphone can reach 50% charge in 14 minutes and a full charge in 40 minutes. 'The GT series has consistently positioned itself as an AI performance flagship, delivering groundbreaking advancements with each iteration,' said Jace Chen, Country Manager at Realme. 'Motorsport fans, gamers, and tech enthusiasts will especially appreciate the luxury design, speed, multitasking ability, and camera intelligence we have integrated into a flagship smartphone'. Graphene The smartphone features IceSense Graphene technology, also in Huawei foldable phones, to offer higher thermal conductivity, 360° heat dissipation, The GT 7 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400e chipset, built on the 4nm process from TSMC. The display is a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen with a peak brightness of 6000 nits and IP69-rated dust and water resistance. Price As the successor to the Realme GT6, the company claims the Realme GT 7 series is a 'flagship killer that offers a unique blend of power, functionality and value for money.' Priced at a recommended retail price of R18,999 the Realme GT 7 has tough competition from the like of Samsung with its recently launched Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE retailing at about R18 499 and the Huawei Pura 80 baes starting at R20 000. Bernie Ecclestone's controversial advice: Time for Lewis Hamilton to step back from F1?
Former F1 owner and British business mogul Bernie Ecclestone has made unsavoury comments about seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, recently suggesting he should walk away from the sport. Ecclestone was speaking to the media about rumours swirling around the paddock regarding a possible partnership with Christian Horner to buy Alpine – which he refuted. He claimed Hamilton had a better chance of winning an eighth world title than he did of buying Alpine with Horner. Ecclestone owned the F1 brand from the 1970s until 2017, when American company Liberty Media acquired the rights. During his tenure, he oversaw the rise of former champions such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. He claimed Hamilton was doing himself a disservice by continuing to race. The 94-year-old's negative stance has been fuelled by Hamilton's recent struggles with Ferrari, notably the widening performance gap between him and team-mate Charles Leclerc during qualifying. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton started in 12th place while Leclerc began from pole, prompting an unusually harsh self-assessment from the Brit, who described himself as 'useless'. He went on to finish the race in P12. Ecclestone went as far as to suggest Hamilton should 'throw in the towel' before something 'nasty' happened to him.
