Iraqi News15-07-2025
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Joint Operations Command in Iraq revealed that the Khurmala oil field in the northern Iraqi province of Erbil was targeted on Monday with two drones.
The attack that took place at 8:30 pm caused material damage with no casualties reported, according to a statement released by Iraq's Joint Operations Command.
Following the incident, the Iraqi Kurdistan Directorate of Counter Terrorism (CTD) declared that two explosive-laden drones were shot down above the Khurmala oil field at 20:20 and 20:25 local time, respectively.
Another drone carrying explosives was intercepted and shot down near Erbil International Airport early Monday morning. No injuries or property damage have been reported in that incident too.
The Kurdistan region of Iraq has seen a significant rise in drone strikes in recent weeks, notably during and after Israel's 12-day war with Iran, which began on June 13 and ended on June 24 with a truce brokered by the United States.

Joint anti-ISIS operation in Aleppo kills Iraqi commander

Shafaq News - Damascus Syrian forces, supported by the US-led Global Coalition, targeted ISIS cells in a raid in the city of al-Bab in eastern Aleppo province, security sources reported on Friday. The joint operation involved units from the Syrian Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior, backed by military helicopters. Four suspects were killed during the raid, including a senior Iraqi commander affiliated with ISIS. Before clashes erupted, security units used loudspeakers to call on the suspects to surrender. Roads leading to the area were sealed off, while reconnaissance drones and aircraft patrolled overhead. The identities of those killed have not been released.

'A series of qualitative operations were carried out in various areas of the country, which resulted in the arrest of 10 terrorist elements belonging to ISIS terrorist gangs in the Diyala, Salahaddin, Nineveh, and Kirkuk provinces,' state media said, citing an Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS) statement. Five more ISIS suspects - three in Anbar and two in 'different areas' - were arrested by the ICTS, the statement added, with an additional suspect captured in collaboration with Kurdish forces in the Kurdistan Region's Sulaimani province. Days prior, two 'dangerous terrorists' were arrested by Iraqi and Kurdish forces in Sulaimani. Six hideouts were destroyed in the vast western deserts of Anbar, a hotspot of ISIS remnants, according to the ICTS. ISIS rose to power and seized swathes of Iraqi and Syrian land in a brazen offensive in 2014, declaring a so-called 'caliphate.' While the group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq and Syria in 2017 and 2019 respectively, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions, especially across the vast expanses of the Syrian desert and several Iraqi provinces situated in a security vacuum between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region. On Thursday, a Baghdad court handed a death sentence to an ISIS member 'who participated in armed terrorist attacks and the crime of kidnapping Yazidis in Sinjar district in 2014.' Despite the threats, Iraqi authorities stress that attacks by ISIS have largely simmered down.

Wasit governor resigns after deadly mall fire

Also in Iraq UK smuggling sanctions target 10 individuals from Iraq, Kurdistan Iraq eyeing 'sustainable' diversification away from oil: PM advisor Diyala council seeks to block Qaratapa district upgrade Iraq's ruling coalition condemns drone attacks on Kurdistan Region A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The governor of Iraq's eastern Wasit province on Wednesday announced his resignation over a deadly mall fire in the provincial capital of Kut last week that left nearly 80 dead. 'In honor of the blood of the martyrs, as they need a position that heals part of their painful wounds, and in loyalty to them and to the people of this province that I served … I announce the submission of my resignation to the Wasit Provincial Council,' Mohammed Jamil al-Mayahi said in a statement. Mayahi added that the council accepted his resignation. On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani approved the results of the investigative committee into the tragedy, which included probing Mayahi and members of the province's civil defense 'to uncover responsibility and determine the causes of negligence.' A massive fire broke out at a newly opened shopping mall in Kut last week, killing at least 77 people. Most victims died from smoke inhalation, and the incident sparked public outrage over the lack of emergency exits and lax safety standards. Authorities later arrested dozens of local officials in Kut's civil defense and municipality, including the civil defense director, citing 'negligence and violations attributed to them.' Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani vowed on Thursday to 'not show lenience with any negligent party' after ordering an investigation into the tragedy. The government agreed to provide 10 million dinars (around $7,600) in compensation for the family of each victim. The health ministry was also instructed to cover medical treatment for the injured, both inside and outside the country.
