Woman whose legs ripped off in horror boat accident had second family heartbreak

Daily Mirror24-05-2025

A tourist who was on her dream holiday had her legs ripped off by a boat propeller when she fell into the water - but it's not the first tragedy her family have faced
The family of a young woman whose legs were ripped off in a freak boat accident are facing their second life-altering tragedy, nine years after their son was left paraplegic.
Hannah Smith, 22, made headlines around the world last week when the holiday she was on with her best friend took a horrific turn. Hannah, who was celebrating graduating with top honours for her arts degree at Miles College, Alabama, fell into the water while her pontoon boat was docking, and was dragged under the propellors.

After being hauled out of a "pool of blood" by two fellow passengers, Hannah was rushed to a local hospital in the Bahamas then later airlifted to the US, where she's undergone eight surgeries at a hospital in Miami. Her worried family, parents Tracy and Marvin, sisters Abigail and Rachel, and brother Joseph are now praying for her to pull through after losing her legs.

And with mounting medical bills that the family will have to pay, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Smiths meet the costs - likely to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But it's not the first time the family have had to face tragedy. Nine years ago, their son Joseph was left quadriplegic when he came off his motorcycle in a horror crash.
"Tracy and I have a good idea of where things are headed. His medical bills were enormous," dad Marvin recalled.
Joseph, now 30, was just 21 when the accident happened, and was devastated to hear his baby sister had gone through a similar near-death experience.

"It was hard for him to hear. When he heard about it, it really bothered him," says mum Tracy. "Because every big brother wants to protect his sister."
But a silver lining to the pain they're facing is that Joseph has a new role to play as Hannah slowly recovers from her injuries. "None of us can physically [relate to what Hannah has gone through], but he's able to encourage her and just remind us of some of the things that he has been through," Tracy added.

"And so he is going to have a much better insight into some of things that she is going to experience than we will."
While Hannah has a "long journey" of recovery ahead of her, her parents can't believe she survived the horror accident. "I feel like we really witnessed a miracle because we could have very well been planning a funeral," says Marvin starkly. "Thank God that we're still able to talk to our daughter.
"That's what we talk to her about every day when she has the negative moments. We all band around her. We had a moment yesterday, we banded around her and we told her, 'this is a miracle, and you are a miracle.'
"People look at miracles like it's something mystical or majestical, but... I felt like God was giving us the answer to our prayers, through Hannah talking to us."

Huge Nate discovery is made in Emmerdale that turns everything on its head

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) body has finally been found after months at the bottom of an Emmerdale lake, but his killer is no closer to being found. We all know that John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) killed Nate, but he's managed to keep his guilt buried for now. With the police scrabbling around for a suspect, both Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) are in the frame. Between Cain beating up Nate on the day he 'disappeared' and Tracy's shady behaviour recently, both parties are left looking guilty… while John attempts to manipulate the situation from the sidelines. As Cain and Tracy continue to point fingers at each other, another shocking discovery emerges, once again turning the investigation upside down. But what does this fresh news mean for Cain and Tracy? As the investigation continues, the police question John over the day Nate disappeared. When the interview finishes, John hopes that he's done enough to protect Cain. Meanwhile, spotting Tracy in the village, an angry Sam Dingle (James Hooten) berates her for accusing Cain of murdering his son. Rattled by the accusations, Cain suggests that it might have been Tracy who was actually responsible for Nate's death. Aghast, Tracy hits back and, as John tries to comfort Cain, he reassures him that the police will clear his name soon. The next day, the police arrive at Tug Ghyll with a search warrant. Tracy is shocked when the police find Nate's phone in Frankie's playhouse. Questioned at the station, she's left shocked when the police tell her that there's no record of the removal man who supposedly took Nate's belongings to Shetland. Will Tracy be left holding the bag for Nate's murder? Speaking on Tracy's suspicions of Cain, actress Amy Walsh said: 'She knows what Cain's capable of. She's seen him see red.' She continued: 'She knows he's not gone off to murder Nate but she fully believes that a fight would have gone too far. He'd have chased him down and he'd have done whatever he could to just get rid of him and get that threat away from his marriage.' Of the moment she's accused of Nate's murder; Amy continued: 'Until she's told otherwise she's only really interested in proving herself innocent, because that's massive. 'The fact that it's then turned on to her is massive. It's like already going through the worst part of your life and having that dropped on you as well.' And the evidence isn't on Tracy's side either – especially given that she's been using his credit card recently, while he was six feet under(water). More Trending 'Just little bits like Tracy using Nate's credit card and stuff like that, because that plants her further in the frame of having a motive to get rid of him,' Amy said. As next week's story continues, Tracy tells the police that she was with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) on the day Nate supposedly died. Vanessa is shocked when Tracy asks her to corroborate her false alibi – and is thrown off-kilter when DS Walsh asks her to corroborate Tracy's whereabouts with an official statement. The police corner Vanessa in huge Emmerdale murder story

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) finds herself implicated in Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) murder when Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) drops her in it in Emmerdale. Things are getting nasty in the Dales after the discovery of Nate's body and accusations are levelled at two likely suspects. John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) – the actual perpetrator – is questioned by police, but not over his own possible guilt, Cain is the one in the frame. After arguing with Nate before he died, he is prime suspect. John does some quick thinking and talking to get Cain Dingle's (Jeff Hordley) name off the suspect list, and after Cain's own grilling by the police, he airs his suspicions that Tracy's dodgy behaviour makes her look guilty. So those are the two suspects, Cain and Tracy. John then does the unthinkable to secure Cain's freedom – he plants Nate's phone in the playhouse at Tracy's. When the police show up with a warrant, Tracy thinks she's done for when they find the mobile tucked away. Worse still, the police discover that the removal man who came to collect Nate's things doesn't exist. Things are looking bad for the single mum. More Trending The police reveal to her that they believe Nate died the day he was meant to leave, and thinking on her toes, Tracy blurts out an alibi – she was with Vanessa all day. The young mother, who calls herself Bonnie and lives in a council property, shared a short clip on social media and wrote: 'I've ran out of Universal Credit, donate to my GoFundMe.' Clapping back to taxpayers, Bonnie filmed herself cleaning her filthy kitchen sink and said: 'I might be a single mum on Universal Credit, but at least I'm not dumb. 'You lot literally have to work 40 hours a week to get half of what I get - I literally get given £4,000 a month from the government.' While Bonnie asked trolls to 'stop putting hate' in her comments, she showed off her messy home and slammed: 'If it wasn't for you lot working full time and paying taxes, I would not even have these grey Tommy Hilfiger leggings.' But moments later, in response to a comment that accused her of lying about her Universal Credit payments, which are given to UK residents with a low income or those who need help with their living costs, Bonnie shared a screenshot of what she claimed to be her most recent payment - a hefty £4,320.98. In response to the hater, who blamed her for spreading 'rage bait' content online, Bonnie said: 'Why would I lie? That's what I got paid like two weeks ago. 'Don't be jealous because I get given double what you earn in a month - I practically get your monthly wages in a week.' On Bonnie's profile, she has since shared a link to her GoFundMe page, whereby she is asking the public to donate to her boob job fund. She has an ambitious target of £2,200 and at the time of writing, had raised just £10 thanks to two donations. Debunking Myths: Life on Universal Credit While she can't afford to pay for the surgery herself, the mother claimed that she 'deserves to feel good' but stressed that getting the cosmetic work done 'isn't about vanity'.
