Drama as extra end decides Greenhills second-place play-off

The overall winners of the Tommy McGuinness Perpetual Trophy had already been decided beforehand, with captain Claire Woods and her teammates Tony Whinters and Gabriel Mullen taking the honours.
However, the runners-up prizes were up for grabs as two teams had finished tied on the same number of points at the conclusion of the league stage, and spectators gathered on Thursday for a seven-end play-off between John Hurley's team of Michelle Devin Dykstra and Gertie Griffin and Paddy Griffin's team of Josephine Moran and Noel Kennedy.
However, with Noel not available on the night Paddy's team incurred two penalty points and Josephine played with four bowls.
As it turned out, there was no quarter asked or given in this tough encounter, which was played in a very sporting manner.
The pressure was on from the start with both teams leaving bowls short and not getting them up to jack high in the first couple of ends.
It was John Hurley's team who settled the better of the two teams, and with Gertie playing a superb backhand draw shot and John unleashing a direct hit into the middle of the head, their team moved two up after three ends.
Paddy's team responded very well, applied considerable pressure on their opponents in the next end and were rewarded for playing decent bowls to jack high as they went one ahead.
That good fortune continued as Josephine played two delightful forehand draw shots into the head, splitting it wide open, to extend their lead to two in the fifth end, with just two remaining.
John's team could see the game slipping away from them, but they gradually regained control. In particular, John and Michelle stepped it up another gear, showing their superb drawing ability as they halved the deficit back to a single shot despite heavy pressure from their opponents.
It was proving to be nip and tuck throughout this match and it was no different in the last end as the two teams went at it hammer and tongs, throwing caution to the wind and playing great bowls when it really mattered.
Ultimately, John's team of Michelle and Gertie managed to gain control with the help of some superb forehand and backhand draw shots from Gertie and Michelle, levelling the match.
With nothing between the teams, the play-off progressed to an extra end, and after winning the toss John's team decided to go first. Gertie duly played a superb forehand draw shot to jack high, but what followed was some superb bowls into a tight head by all the players.
With John's team of Michelle and Gertie holding shot, Paddy put weight on his bowls, but it was to no avail as John played a superb shot into the head on the backhand to secure the game by two shots and clinch the runner-up spot in the tournament.
Club chairperson John Hurley presented the Tommy McGuinness Perpetual Trophy to the winning captain Claire Woods and her team of Tony Whinters and Gabriel Mullen and congratulating them on winning the trips tournament.
Vice-chairman Paddy Smith presented the runners-up prizes to John Hurley's team of Michelle Devin Dykstra and Gertie Griffin.
John said in his address that he'd like to thank all the members who took part over the eight weeks, the umpires who officiated in the matches and those who took care of the refreshments throughout the tournament.
The next tournament will be over the round robin rinks format and it will commence on July 31. Players are asked to please put their name forward on the noticeboard if they wish to take part.
Standout performers on Thursday were John Hurley, Josephine Moran, Michelle Devin Dykstra, Paddy Griffin and Gertie Griffin.
Times of play this Thursday are from 7 to 9pm.

Jm Jungle surprises King George rivals in Goodwood feature race

JM JUNGLE CAUSED a minor upset in the King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood. A field of 12 sprinters went to post for the five-furlong dash, with John and Sean Quinn's high-class handicapper Jm Jungle a 14-1 shot for what was his first appearance at Group-race level. Smartly away in the hands of Jason Hart, the five-year-old was towards the main group that raced on the far side of the track from the start and showed a willing attitude when the challengers attempted to reel him late on to prevail by a neck. She's Quality filled the runner-up spot for her fourth race in succession, with Commonwealth Cup victor Time For Sandals half a length further behind in third. Pacemaker Qirat stuns Sussex Stakes big guns at Goodwood to win at 150-1

Field Of Gold's pacemaker Qirat caused an almighty shock with a 150-1 victory in the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. John and Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold was a 1-3 shot to follow in the hoofprints of his sire Kingman by adding this prestigious Group One contest to his previous top-level victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. The Ralph Beckett-trained Qirat, who was last seen finishing 27th of 30 runners in the Royal Hunt Cup, was supplemented for the race last week at a cost of £70,000 (€81,000) in a bid to ensure the red-hot favourite had a strong gallop to aim at. But the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line. READ MORE Field Of Gold, meanwhile, had to settle for a laboured fourth, with Aidan O'Brien's Henri Matisse third. Beckett said: 'Richard has always been a very good judge of the clock. The last thing I said to him was keep going with this fellow, he could run really well. 'He loves this place and I wanted to enter him because his work was really good. It's a horse race and anything can happen.' Qirat's dam, Emulous, also produced last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner for Beckett in Bluestocking. He went on: 'I thought he looked a million beforehand and that in the race he would set the pace from the front, and the longer he lasted the better for those concerned with the favourite. 'He's always threatened to be a good horse and today he showed it. 'What about the mare? To come up with Bluestocking and him. She's been like a hole in the wall, like a cash machine.' Kingscote, who recently announced he is taking up a licence in Hong Kong, said: 'I feel like a villain but when I saw it wasn't a grey nose [Field Of Gold] coming towards me I just kept going.'

'We're waiting to sit down with John': Signs point to Cleary remaining as Cork manager

Cork GAA chiefs are confident of having the Cork senior football manager's position 'sorted' by the August County Board meeting, with all indications pointing towards John Cleary remaining in the job. Cleary's three-year term concluded on the evening of Cork's All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final defeat to Dublin, but recent dispatches suggest he is keen to continue for a fourth season, albeit with a shaken-up backroom team. 'We hope to be in a position by August 5, at our next county board meeting, to have sorted the senior football. We will be speaking to John and hopefully we will have that sorted by then,' said Cork GAA chairman Pat Horgan. When pushed by the Irish Examiner if this was confirmation that Cleary was staying put, Horgan replied 'the bottom line is that we are waiting to sit down with John, and once we sit down with John we will then be in a position to finalise it, hopefully'. Ray O'Mahony's two-year term as U20 football manager concluded with their comprehensive Munster final defeat to Kerry and so an appointments committee is currently dealing with that vacancy. Similar to Cleary, Pat Ryan's three-year term as Cork senior hurling manager came to a close on Sunday evening. Horgan insisted the proximity to Sunday means that position will not be moved on for another couple of weeks. 'We are all tremendously disappointed after the weekend but now is a time for reflection and we'll leave time for reflection. We'll then sit down and talk to everybody concerned. 'In my few words at the banquet, what I said is 35 minutes should not define a team or a group. The one point I made at the banquet very forcibly was that Sunday was our seventh championship game and every single one of them was sold out. That is something the GAA and business community have benefited from considerably. And we are very grateful to our fans for getting behind the team. We are also very grateful to the people who put their hands into their pockets to support the whole thing.' Horgan said the executive both understood and supported the decision of the Cork senior hurling management and players to abandon the traditional homecoming. 'The thing about the homecoming is that we had never actually put it in place until we saw what the result was. We respected their wishes that they just didn't want to go through with it, and we said that is fine. I think that is fair and reasonable. 'We had it last year, and I think they deserved a bit of space to themselves. I just think it was going to be so, so difficult for everybody involved. We understood.' The county board chairman did not give clarity on when the review recommendations of those who were part of the Cork football 2019-24 plan would be executed and who had been charged with executing them. They included a review of Divisions' and Colleges' participation in County Championships, continued focus on the senior development squad, expansion of training hubs across the county, and reform and restructuring of the county coaching committee. 'We have a meeting tonight [Tuesday] on nothing else but football and how we can improve football, and I've no doubt we will have lots of discussions between here and the end of the year on football and how we can make progress.'
