GPS components must stay vigilant ahead of state election, says PBB veep
Dr Annuar speaks during the Pre-Gawai Programme.
SIBU (May 17): Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa'ee has cautioned all Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties against becoming complacent, despite the coalition's current position of strength.
He stressed the importance of staying vigilant and proactive, especially with the next state election expected as early as next year.
'Some may not realise it, but based on the current term, the state election is due next year and that's not far off. Thus, we must be fully prepared and remain on guard.
'Never assume we are too strong to fail. As the saying goes, 'Still waters run deep', the greatest threats may come not from the outside, but from within. We cannot afford to let our guard down,' he said at the 2025 Pre-Gawai Programme for N.53 Bawang Assan here on Friday.
Also present wasTourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing as the event's guest of honour.
Other attendees included Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh; Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian; Meluan assemblyman Roland Duat Jubin; Krian assemblyman Friday Belik; Senator Pele Peter Tinggom; political secretaries to the Sarawak Premier Joshua Ting and Brian Fong; PDP Bawang Assan chairman Councillor Wong Hua; and the programme's organising chairman Tuai Rumah Bujang Ujeh.
Dr Annuar expressed hope that no opposition party would contest the Bawang Assan seat, saying that GPS must remain united and focused on retaining the constituency.
'There is no other formula for success than through strong cooperation. The spirit of unity among GPS component parties must not only be maintained, it must be strengthened,' he said.
He also assured that PBB would give its full backing to any candidate fielded by GPS in Bawang Assan.
'PBB is fully committed to the GPS cause. We will support any candidate, as long as they are from one of our component parties. Once the leadership has made its decision, we will rally behind that candidate to ensure victory,' said the Nangka assemblyman.
Adding on, he reiterated GPS' resolve to pursue the full return of Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), with particular focus on education autonomy.
'As State Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, I will work to ensure that the education autonomy promised under Paragraph 17 of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report is restored to Sarawak.
'This is not a struggle we can fight alone. The people must stand united behind us so we can reclaim what rightfully belongs to Sarawak,' he said.
On the upcoming Gawai celebration, he said the festival holds a special place in his calendar, and should be celebrated by all Sarawakians regardless of background in the same spirit as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.
'Our harmony and unity in Sarawak, built across more than 27 ethnic groups, is a source of pride and a model for the nation. Political stability is our foundation.
'With this unity and harmony as our strength, I am confident and I promise that PBB, PDP and the other GPS component parties will continue working to reclaim Sarawak's rights from Putrajaya in the near future,' he said. dr annuar rapaee gps PBB state election

Call to reflect MA63 equal status: Petronas, Mara scholarships
Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Elias said in the case of Mara, a recent viral video indicated bumiputra students offered to study abroad for courses costing up to RM1 million or more reportedly comprising mainly peninsula students, although Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan natives are also bumiputras. LABUAN: There is concern that the cutback on expenditure by Petronas which will see up to 5,000 or 10 per cent of its workforce being laid off may also impact its commitment towards education, particularly the awarding of scholarships. Bumiputra rights activist George Elias said even before this new development, Petronas had never been transparent to the people of Labuan, Sarawak and Sabah on whether the Borneo territories were getting their fair share of scholarships. Advertisement 'There was no breakdown on how much went towards scholarships. 'We do not know whether the scholarships even reflected the one-third equal composition under amendments to the Federal Constitution in 2022 that restored the status of Sabah and Sarawak to that of equal partnership in the federation as per the Malaysia Agreement (MA63). Tiong orders pullout from Sibu association over ‘interference' by politician
PDP president Tiong King Sing accused the political party involved of being arrogant and stubborn, and its leaders of being obsessed with power and position. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Progressive Democratic Party president Tiong King Sing has ordered party members to withdraw from a Chinese association in Sibu, Sarawak, over an unnamed politician's interference in the association's elections. Tiong claimed to have received numerous complaints about the political party leader's actions in the election of the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association's committee members. He did not name the party nor the leader, but gave a hint that it might be a party associated with PDP by questioning whether the party in question would be able to win future elections on its own 'without the support of allied parties'. Tiong said the politician was trying to manipulate the association's elections using his political influence. Tiong claimed he had evidence that the political party had issued instructions about the association's elections. Tiong, who is vice-chairman of the state's ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), warned against treating community leadership positions as political assets. 'This is my final warning. The political party in question has utterly failed to uphold the ideals of power-sharing and inclusiveness,' he said in a Facebook post. 'We do not need their so-called 'mercy' nor are we interested in being part of a body that has become another political stage for a party.' Tiong said the role of community leaders was to serve the public, and such leadership posts should never be the subject of a power struggle among political parties. He accused the other party's leaders of being obsessed with power and position. 'They bicker endlessly over trivial matters and seek to monopolise social resources and political capital,' he said. 'Their behaviour is nothing short of disgraceful.' PDP is a component of GPS, along with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP). PDP and SUPP leaders have clashed multiple times in recent years, particularly after the former accepted Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) leaders and members en bloc last year. PSB, led by Wong Soon Koh until its dissolution, is a splinter of SUPP.
