"Double-engine government was negligent": Rahul Gandhi slams NDA over Dalit girl's death at PMCH
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday lashed out at the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, led by Nitish Kumar, over the death of a minor Dalit girl, alleging negligence in her treatment at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).
In a post on social media website X, LoP Gandhi alleged that the 'double-engine' government's negligence led to the dalit girl's death.
'The brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment is extremely shameful. If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. But the double-engine government was negligent not only in providing security but also in saving his life,' he said.
The Congress leader further in his post assured that justice would be served to the victim's family.
'We will not sit quietly until the victim's family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers,' the post read.
Earlier on Sunday, several Congress workers held a protest demanding justice in the case.
Speaking at the protest, Bihar Congress Chief Rajesh Ram said, 'There are two aspects to this case. First, that she was raped. After the rape, there was a brutal attempt to murder her. And second, the government left no stone unturned in its negligence. Due to the delay in treatment, that girl is no longer alive. For this, the government is directly responsible for the failure of the healthcare system. Go see for yourself.'
This comes after a minor girl from Muzaffarpur's Kundli, who was brought to the PMCH four days after she was denied treatment by AIIMS, PATNA. The minor girl was a victim of rape, as per officials.
However, PMCH Incharge Superintendent Abhijit Singh denied the claims made by the victim's family on the delay of treatment and stated that the girl who was brought to PMCH in a severely injured condition had been given proper medical care.
'When she was admitted here, we provided complete medical care from our side. The claims made by the family that there was a delay in treatment are baseless. We did everything we could. We consulted all the departments that needed to be involved and ensured she received treatment in the ICU as well,' he told ANI. (ANI)

Crime Branch team records statement of woman who was illegally detained by Peroorkada police
The Crime Branch on Tuesday commenced its probe in a case involving the illegal detention and alleged custodial harassment of a Dalit woman by the Peroorkada police following a false charge of stealing a gold necklace. A team led by Pathanamthitta District Crime Branch DySP K.A. Vidyadharan recorded the statement of the complainant, Bindu R., at her house in Nedumangad. Expressing hope that the truth would emerge through the ongoing investigation, she demanded the probe be extended to the house owner, Kowdiar native Omana Daniel, who had filed the theft complaint against her. Reiterated accusations In her statement, Ms. Bindu is learnt to have reiterated her accusations against suspended sub-inspector Prasad S.G. and grade assistant sub-inspector Prasannakumar of subjecting her to unlawful custody and mental harassment. She added that she was held in custody at the Peroorkada police station for over 20 hours. The Crime Branch will also collect statements from the house owner as well as the police officers who had investigated the case in its initial stages. CCTV footage from the Peroorkada police station will be thoroughly examined as part of the inquiry. Besides the suspension of the two officers, the Station House Officer was suspended after the issue had come to light. Mr. Vidyadharan has been entrusted with the probe based on a directive issued by the Kerala State Human Rights Commission. The panel had instructed the Kerala Police to hand over the investigation to a police officer of the rank of DySP or above from outside the Thiruvananthapuram district for an impartial probe. The team has been instructed to submit its report by July 7.

Coimbatore man gets double life term, 16 years of RI for raping elderly Dalit woman in 2022
The Special Court for the trial of cases registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Coimbatore on Tuesday awarded 16 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and double life imprisonment to a 42-year-old man from Kinathukadavu in the district for raping an elderly Dalit woman in 2022. Judge K. Vivekananthan awarded the punishment to M. Velusamy, a daily wage labourer from a village near Kinathukadavu. Velusamy, who belongs to a dominant caste, was arrested for raping a 65-year-old Dalit woman from the village on June 26, 2022. He committed the crime when the woman went out in search of fodder for goats. As per the First Information Report (FIR), Velusamy also assaulted the woman when she resisted the rape attempt. While Velusamy escaped after the crime, the woman managed to walk to the nearest bus stop, where she fainted. After identifying the woman in unconscious state, a villager informed her grandson, who rushed her to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) at Kinathukadavu. Sensing the gravity of the crime and the health condition of the woman, the PHC authorities referred her to the District Headquarters Hospital in Pollachi. S. Amutha, the then inspector of the All Women Police Station (AWPS), Perur, reached the hospital after being alerted about the crime and recorded the woman's statement. The court found Velusamy guilty and awarded him seven years of rigorous imprisonment for offence under Section 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code. He was awarded another seven years of RI for offences under Section 325 IPC read with 3 (2) (Va) of SC/ST) of SC/ST Act. He was sentenced to undergo two years of RI for 506 (i) (criminal intimidation). The court awarded life imprisonment to the accused for offence under Section 376 (1) of IPC and another life term for offence under Section 376 (1) read with 3(2) (v) of SC/ST Act. The convict was ordered to undergo the two life terms concurrently, after undergoing the 16 years of rigorous imprisonment for other offences consecutively. He was slapped with a total fine of ₹32,000.

Dalit minor rape case: Bihar government takes action against two medical officials
Acting on mounting pressure from the Opposition, the Bihar government on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) swung into action over the death of an 11-year old Dalit girl who was raped and brutally assaulted with a knife, and then succumbed to her injuries on Sunday at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The PMCH did not allot a bed to the girl, who had been transferred from Muzaffarpur, and she had to wait for five hours in the ambulance before she was admitted. In response to the outrage, the Health Department took action against PMCH Deputy Superintendent-in-Charge Abhijeet Singh, who has been relieved from his post. Kumari Bibha, the Superintendent of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur has also been suspended. 'Extreme insensitivity' The official notification from the Health Department said that the death of a minor rape victim has come to its notice, adding that detailed investigation is being conducted into the matter. It said that, prima facie, it had been found that the Deputy Superintendent-in-Charge of Patna Medical College and Hospital did not discharge his duties properly, indicating administrative failure. 'Superintendent, SKMCH, Muzaffarpur did not follow the referral policy and did not discharge [her] duties properly. Also, extreme insensitivity was shown in the treatment of the victim. Ms. Bibha is suspended with immediate effect till further orders,' the Health Department order said. She has been suspended under the relevant provisions of Rule 9 of the Bihar Government Servant (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules-2005. A separate charge sheet will be prepared once the investigation is complete. During her suspension period, Dr. Bibha's headquarters will be set as the State Health Department in Patna, and she will only be paid a subsistence allowance, in the light of Rule 10 of the Bihar Government Servant (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules-2005. Brutal assault, deadly negligence The 11-year old Dalit child was raped and found in a pit at a brick kiln in Muzaffarpur on May 26, according to the police. She had nearly 20 knife wounds on and around her neck. A first information report (FIR) was lodged against a 30-year-old man on the complaint of the girl's uncle, and the accused was arrested the same evening. The child was initially taken to the SKMCH and then transferred to Patna on May 31, for better medical treatment. However, she was allegedly left in pain inside the ambulance outside the Patna hospital for about five hours, and was admitted only after intervention by Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar. She died at the PMCH on June 1. 'No one will be spared' The Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly Tejashwi Yadav visited the child's house in Muzaffarpur on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), and slammed the State government for the death by negligence and the alleged failure of law and order in the State. Attacking Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Mr. Yadav said that beds at government hospitals are sold at premium prices. BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary accepted that the death of the rape victim was due to medical negligence, adding that the State government has taken strict action against the top medical officials of two medical college hospitals. 'No one will be spared and the culprits of rape will be punished by conducting a speedy trial. Nitish Kumar's government works on the policy of zero tolerance towards all kinds of crimes. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty in the Muzaffarpur incident. The Opposition should not do politics on this incident,' Mr. Choudhary told journalists in Patna.
