Keith Cronin on why a win this weekend is vital to retaining his Irish Tarmac Championship title

Cronin starts the third round in Killarney tied on points with Claudy's Callum Devine, who was triumphant on his return to the cross-border series at last month's Circuit of Ireland.
Late brake issues for Cronin — and a puncture on the penultimate test of the Easter event — handed Devine and his co-driving team-mate, Noel O'Sullivan, an unexpected victory. Afterwards, Cronin confirmed that he was using the Circuit as one of his dropped scores.
'From our side, we will have to give it our best to stay in the mix for the Irish Tarmac title,' said No.2 seed Cronin. 'The next two rallies, Killarney this weekend and June's three-day Donegal International, are set to be crucial to how the year unfolds for all of us.
'We have seen how fickle rallying can be, especially over the past couple of years. This year we have seen both sides again; we got the win in West Cork after Jon Armstrong had his engine problem after the final stage, then on the Circuit a couple of weeks ago we had the brake issues when we were leading with two stages to go — and we ended up eighth.'
Not only does Devine arrive in 'The Kingdom' fresh from his Circuit success, he is also the winner of the Rally of the Lakes for the past three seasons. If he can make it four, he would move to within one of equalling the record held by the late, great Bertie Fisher who dominated from 1990 until 1994.
Other notable entries include Josh Moffett in his Citroen C3 Rally2, Wales' Meirion Evans in a Toyota Gazoo Racing Yaris Rally2, and the triple British Rally Champion Matt Edwards who has decided to compete in honour of his grandmother following her recent passing.
'Callum and Noel started the year late, but they already have a maximum score from the Circuit of Ireland Rally, and they always seem to go well in Killarney —they have won there on each of the last three occasions,' continued Cronin.
'They have also won in Donegal for the past two years and if they were to repeat those results again this season, I think it would be very difficult for us to hold them back from going on and winning the Irish Tarmac Championship for a second time, if I am honest.
'Matt and David (Moynihan, co-driver) have had two non-finishes so far this year at West Cork and the Circuit of Ireland — they have nothing to lose by going all-out from now on.'
Saturday's leg of the International Rally of the Lakes incorporates three loops of three stages – 'Headford', 'Lisbabe' and 'Red Bog' – with the main field tackling classic closed road speed tests such as 'Molls Gap', 'Beallaghbeama' and 'Shanara' on Sunday.

Hyundai Unveils Attractive August Lease Deal on 2025 Sonata

If you're considering short-term ownership of the fastest Corolla ever made, August might be a good time to take the plunge. General Motors could replace its aging van lineup with a rebadged Hyundai Staria under the Chevrolet badge, offering electric and hybrid options as early as 2028. A compelling family sedan Family sedans remain a vital part of the American automotive landscape, as evidenced by their solid sales figures amid a growing market of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. The mainstream mid-size family sedan segment remains contentious, with juggernauts like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. Just don't count out the 2025 Hyundai Sonata because it's got a ton of appealing standard features and a facelift that makes the Sonata look more refined and aggressive. What is the Sony Honda Mobility Afeela 1? Watch More The 2025 Hyundai Sonata in base trim is powered by a 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder powering the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the more prevalent (and less fun) continuously variable transmission found in most of its competitors. You can upgrade to all-wheel drive, as a benefit to those in harsher climates. The gas Sonata comes in four trim levels with the base SE starting at $26,900 and topping out with the N Line at $35,500. That trim level gets the more powerful 290-hp 2.5-liter turbo four with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The base engine and FWD offer an EPA-estimated 28 city, 38 highway, and 32 combined. By providing your email address, you agree that it may be used pursuant to Arena Group's Privacy Policy. We may receive compensation. The refresh across all trims last year gave the Sonata a bigger grille and a thin set of LED daytime running lights that sit atop the quad headlights. The cabin now features dual 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreens seamlessly integrated into a single curved display panel. The steering wheel sports a refreshed three-spoke design, while the gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a column-mounted rectangular knob found in other Hyundai models. The Sonata's base price undercuts both the Camry and the Accord, and Hyundai is offering a great lease deal in August that makes it even more appealing. 2025 Hyundai Sonata lease deal for August Hyundai is offering a great lease deal for August on the 2025 Hyundai Sonata SE for $259 per month for 36 months with $3,499 due at lease signing (excludes registration, tax, title, license, processing or documentation fees, insurance, and any emission charge). The offer is based on $3,499 due at lease signing (includes $259 first month's payment $3,240 capitalized cost reduction). No security deposit is required. There is a $400 disposition fee due at the end of the lease (except for CO, IN, IA, KS, ME, OK, SC, WI, WV, & WY, where the disposition fee is subject to the limitations of state laws). Mileage limit is 10,000 per year or 30,000 for the lease term. The lease offer ends September 2, 2025. Learn more here. It also comes standard with a tire pressure monitoring system. The 2025 Sonata also won the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, making it one of the safest in the industry. Source: Hyundai The Sonata's total passenger volume is 104.4 cubic feet. The front row provides a whopping 46.1 inches of legroom, and the second row has 34.8 inches of legroom. The generous trunk provides 15.6 cubic feet of space, more than the Toyota Camry and the Subaru Legacy. Final thoughts The 2025 Hyundai Sonata may not sell as well as the Camry and Accord, but it's both more affordable and offers more front-row legroom than both of them. The Sonata is worth considering because it provides a wide range of standard features, and the August lease deal makes it even more appealing. We see more than one BMW design cue, but the high-performance version of the Q7 also calls to mind American SUVs. Toyota's hot hatch is a compelling lease in August 2025 The GR Corolla is a car some never thought Toyota would actually make. August's lease prices might have more than one enthusiast jumping into the driver's seat. For August, you can lease a GR Corolla for $563 per month with $3,213 due at signing. You'll be on the hook for a 36-month lease with 12,000 miles allotted per year, and stepping down to 10,000 miles annually knocks that payment down to $554 per month. This figure doesn't include taxes and fees, so your payment might be a bit higher. 2025 Toyota GR Corolla — Source: Toyota Prefer $0 down on your GR Corolla lease? By spreading the $3,213 due at signing across the lease term, we can estimate what a GR Corolla lease looks like with $0 down. You're adding about $89.25 to your monthly payment, bringing the new total to $652.25. With 10,000 miles per year, the new payment ends up at $643.25. This isn't an official $0 estimate, and your payment will be higher after fees and taxes. For the best and most current offers, check out Toyota's website for deals and incentives for the GR Corolla. More about the GR Corolla The GR Corolla is one of the best 'entry-level enthusiast' rides you can buy today. Its perky 300-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine gets even more torque for the 2025 model year at 295 pound-feet. You can also now choose from a standard manual transmission or a new automatic transmission, the latter of which adds launch control. Further revisions include slight exterior design changes, reconfigured suspension geometry, and an available head-up display in the Premium Plus trim. However, even without the HUD (the lease price quoted is for the base car), the GR Corolla is big on excitement and far from a dull, uninspiring vehicle to sit in. The entry-level GR Corolla Core comes packed with goodies, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, an 8.0-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and grippy sport bucket seats covered in black fabric. We've reviewed the automatic Corolla both during a track drive and in day-to-day driving conditions, and it's a bundle of fun no matter where you find yourself. 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 2025 Toyota GR Corolla Final thoughts The GR Corolla offers a great balance between performance, price, and features. Starting at around $40,000 puts it well under the Civic Type R and Golf R but a bit above the Hyundai Elantra N, and that's exactly where it belongs. August's lease offer makes getting behind the wheel manageable for enthusiasts with a little bit of cash to spare. Sharing little with the standard Corolla it's based on unfortunately extends to pricing, but the GR Corolla is still one of the best bangs for your buck when it comes to sporty daily drivers. Toyota to enter South Africa's EV market with three models in 2026

GQEBERHA, South Africa, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Toyota (7203.T), opens new tab plans to introduce three fully-electric models in South Africa in 2026, a senior executive said on Thursday, entering a nascent EV market where Chinese rivals such as BYD are already competing with European carmakers. Volvo ( opens new tab currently dominates EV sales in South Africa, followed by BMW ( opens new tab and Mercedes-Benz ( opens new tab, but Chinese EV makers are starting to flood the market too as they seek new markets amid restrictions on exports to the United States and Europe. Toyota currently only sells hybrid electric vehicles in South Africa, but leads with a commanding 67% of the market for hybrids and plug-in hybrids in 2024, with models like its Corolla Cross. "We're launching battery electric vehicles at the beginning of 2026, so we will have three new battery electric vehicles," Toyota South Africa CEO Andrew Kirby told Reuters on the sidelines of an auto components conference, without providing further details. "We do not believe that one powertrain is going to dominate in the future. So we'll have internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles and potentially even a carbon neutral internal combustion engine." Low incomes, high import duties, unreliable power availability and a lack of sufficient charging infrastructure have long hampered manufacturers' efforts to sell EVs in South Africa, whose share of total sales is still very low. On Chinese competition, Kirby said while he welcomes competition, "it's a very strategic concern for us and we need to make sure that we respond in the right way and as quickly as possible. It's a big challenge." South Africa's automotive sector "is at an inflection point," he added, with fairly flat production volumes, a drop in local content and a surge in imported vehicle sales. This has prompted the big local seven car manufacturers, including Toyota, BMW, Isuzu and Volkswagen, to put together a policy recommendation document sent to the trade and industry minister, on how to support and protect the local industry, Kirby said. "We do have some taxation structures that are a little bit counterproductive and so we've made some fiscally neutral policy proposals," Kirby said, adding that proposals also include the restructuring of the rebate system. "We are hoping that in the next six months there will be some short-term interventions that can be announced." Toyota has production operations in South Africa but its fully EV models will be imported initially, with the aim of making some in South Africa eventually.
