3.2L in 21 BMC wards inch closer to pure water supply
Kolkata: The
Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation
(BMC) has started executing the Rs 333 crore project of setting up a
water distribution network
to supply filtered water across
Rajarhat-Gopalpur
, covering BMC wards 1 to 21.
Overhead tanks and underground reservoirs will also be set up under the scheme. After completion of the project, surface-treated filtered water will be supplied from the
New Town water treatment plant
to households, benefiting close to 3.2 lakh people, officials said.
"As per the plan, there will be 14 overhead tanks, four underground reservoirs, and a new distribution network line for supplying filtered water. Soil testing was done and work to lay the main distribution lines has started. The entire project is expected to be completed in two years," said a BMC official. The funding is being done under the Centre's AMRUT scheme. Presently, several areas in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur belt, which includes areas surrounding the airport, Kaikhali, Baguiati, Tegharia, parts of Kestopur, and other adjacent places, don't have overhead tanks or a distribution network for supplying filtered water to the households.
Residents in these areas mostly depend on underground water reserves. This vast belt was previously under the erstwhile Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality, which was dissolved after the entire area was integrated with Bidhannagar in 2015 during the formation of BMC.
When it comes to filtered water, BMC receives close to 17 MGD per day at present. Around 10 MGD comes from Tala and the rest is supplied from the New Town water treatment plant.

But most of it is supplied to Salt Lake households only. Residents also claimed that presently water supplied to the households has high levels of iron. " We hope to get a supply of filtered surface water soon," said Kaustav Dey, a resident of a multi-storied high-rise apartment close to Chinar Park.
"Our aim is to provide filtered water to all households across BMC area," said BMC MMIC (water supply), Tulsi Sinha Roy.
BMC has also come up with a blueprint to revamp the 2,700 km-long water supply pipeline network in Salt Lake.
Another civic official claimed that the demand for water in Salt Lake was increasing with the rise in population.

Nagpur: More than 260 children have found their way back home over the past 16 months thanks to Operation Nanhe Farishte, an initiative run by Railway Protection Force (RPF) under the Central Railway's Nagpur division. The initiative focuses on spotting and saving children who've run away, been trafficked, gone missing, or been abandoned at railway platforms and trains. From January 2024 to April 2025, RPF teams rescued 239 children — 116 boys and 85 girls in 2024, and 15 boys and 23 girls so far in 2025. Most had run away from home. Others were found wandering alone or had been deliberately left behind. Each case was different, but the response was always swift. Senior divisional security commandant Manoj Kumar said that trained RPF staff are now present at every post, trained to notice subtle signs — a child loitering alone, avoiding eye contact, or clutching a bag too tight. Once identified, the child is brought to a help desk where the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) is contacted. "CWC members counsel the child and take custody if needed," says Kumar. From 108 to top 20: Nuh rises among aspirational districts
Gurgaon: Nuh has made a leap from 108th to 20th position among India's 112 most backward districts in the aspirational districts programme. Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini credited the transformation to focused development in education, health, nutrition, and infrastructure since 2018. Saini announced several initiatives during the Mewat development board meeting to further improve the quality of education and boost skill development in the district. The govt Model Sanskriti School will now be supervised by the Mewat development authority instead of the education department. Construction of the Unani medical college in Akera and the Mewat model college in Ferozepur Jhirka will begin soon with a fresh tender, while the driving training and research Institute in Chhapera will start in Oct. BMC to mark high and low tide lines for Ganeshotsav
Mumbai: The BMC will identify and mark low tide lines (LTL) and high tide lines (HTL) and install marine navigation buoys along with mooring at low tide lines at 43 Ganesh idol immersion sites in Mumbai. The BMC is carrying out the action to adhere to guidelines for Ganesh idol immersion issued by the CPCB, which mandates that idol immersions in the sea be done between LTL and HTL. Similarly, the civic body is also inviting expressions of interest for the shortlisting of manufacturers, authorised dealers, suppliers, and distributors of eco-friendly water-based, biodegradable, and non-toxic natural dyes for idols. The list of shortlisted suppliers of natural dyes for idols will be put in the public domain for the benefit of idol makers. Naresh Dahibavkar, president of Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, said, "We normally appeal to the Ganpati mandals to immerse idols during low tide as they can go farther into the sea. During high tide, some remains of the idols or parts used as a base for the idols are washed ashore."
