More than 200 fruit trees to boost Salt Lake green cover

1 2 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will plant over 200 small and medium-sized fruit trees of different varieties across Salt Lake. BMC MMIC (Environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal said saplings of mango, rose apple, guava, sapota, and other trees will be planted at various locations. "The fruit trees will be planted along the roads and parks. Surveys are being carried out to find suitable locations for plantation. The aim is to increase greenery," Mondal said. It was earlier decided by the civic authorities that henceforth, only small and medium-sized flower and fruit trees would be planted instead of the taller varieties. This decision was taken to ensure better urban planning and safety, as a number of accidents had occurred recently due to tall trees getting uprooted and falling on the road. Two years ago, a 40-year-old died after succumbing to injuries a few days after a large dead tree fell on him inside a cluster at Salt Lake's Purbachal housing. Horticulture experts mentioned that the nature of the soil in Salt Lake is such that large trees, which have deep roots, should not be planted on the roadside boulevards as they cannot penetrate deep into the soil. "Instead, small or medium-sized palm trees should be considered," said an expert. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The civic authorities have started conducting a fresh tall tree health survey across Salt Lake. "Councillors are providing a list of tall trees that are in bad shape. Those that are dead or in a very damaged state will be uprooted, and other trees will be trimmed to reduce their weight so that they can properly stand. Trees showing signs of decay or structural weakness will either be treated by trimming or cutting off the damaged portions or be removed if necessary and replaced with suitable small or medium-sized trees," said a civic official. Residents are welcoming the civic body's move, saying that tall trees had fallen several times at different places, not only causing accidents but also damaging public utilities like cars and boundary walls of parks. BMC starts another round of health audit of tall trees in Salt Lake

1 2 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started another round of health survey of tall trees across Salt Lake. "Local councillors have been asked to identify and give a list of tall trees that are in bad shape, after which corrective measures will be taken. Trees with large canopies are pruned periodically from the top to reduce their weight, while fully dead or damaged trees are felled with the forest department's permission," said BMC MMiC (environment) Rahima Bibi Mondal. Horticulture experts pointed out that the nature of the soil in Salt Lake was such that large trees with deep roots should not be planted along roads, where the roots could not penetrate too deep into the earth. "Small or medium-sized palm trees should be considered for Salt Lake," said an expert. Previously, over 50 trees, which were found fully damaged, dead or dangerously leaning towards the road, were cut down, and many were pruned to reduce the weight of their canopy to avoid any mishap. The exercise is being taken up periodically after a number of tall trees in Salt Lake uprooted over the past few years. Following a tree health audit that was first carried out in 2022, about 100 tall trees across Salt Lake were found to be in bad shape, with many dangerously leaning on one side. Officials said that they aimed to take up avenue plantation by planting only small and medium-sized trees, which were suitable for the nature of the township's soil.

3.2L in 21 BMC wards inch closer to pure water supply

Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started executing the Rs 333 crore project of setting up a water distribution network to supply filtered water across Rajarhat-Gopalpur , covering BMC wards 1 to 21. Overhead tanks and underground reservoirs will also be set up under the scheme. After completion of the project, surface-treated filtered water will be supplied from the New Town water treatment plant to households, benefiting close to 3.2 lakh people, officials said. "As per the plan, there will be 14 overhead tanks, four underground reservoirs, and a new distribution network line for supplying filtered water. Soil testing was done and work to lay the main distribution lines has started. The entire project is expected to be completed in two years," said a BMC official. The funding is being done under the Centre's AMRUT scheme. Presently, several areas in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur belt, which includes areas surrounding the airport, Kaikhali, Baguiati, Tegharia, parts of Kestopur, and other adjacent places, don't have overhead tanks or a distribution network for supplying filtered water to the households. Residents in these areas mostly depend on underground water reserves. This vast belt was previously under the erstwhile Rajarhat-Gopalpur Municipality, which was dissolved after the entire area was integrated with Bidhannagar in 2015 during the formation of BMC. When it comes to filtered water, BMC receives close to 17 MGD per day at present. Around 10 MGD comes from Tala and the rest is supplied from the New Town water treatment plant. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 굿네이버스 기부반지로 아이들 후원하기 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo But most of it is supplied to Salt Lake households only. Residents also claimed that presently water supplied to the households has high levels of iron. " We hope to get a supply of filtered surface water soon," said Kaustav Dey, a resident of a multi-storied high-rise apartment close to Chinar Park. "Our aim is to provide filtered water to all households across BMC area," said BMC MMIC (water supply), Tulsi Sinha Roy. BMC has also come up with a blueprint to revamp the 2,700 km-long water supply pipeline network in Salt Lake. Another civic official claimed that the demand for water in Salt Lake was increasing with the rise in population.
