Vellappally Natesan slams Satheeshan

The Hindu2 days ago
Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Saturday strongly criticised Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, calling him the worst Opposition leader in the State.
While inaugurating a programme organised by the SNDP Yogam at Pandappally near Muvattupuzha, he said Mr. Satheesan is anti-Ezhava. 'He is in no position to teach me about Guru Dharma,' said Mr. Natesan.
'Mr. Satheesan is incapable of leading the United Democratic Front (UDF). The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will come to power for the third time in the State,' he said. 'Mr. Satheesan is trying to ensure his position and is all set to become the next Chief Minister. However, he is does not know how to mange issues in a better manner,' said Mr. Natesan. .
On Malappuram
'Some groups are trying to portray me as anti-Muslim when I speak the truth. Ezhava community in Malappuram is facing discrimination, even in the education sector. Most of the institutions there belong to the Muslim community. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is a communal political party. Are there any other community members on the personal staff of the IUML representatives? If it is a secular party, will they field a Brahmin community member on their seats in the next election?' asked Mr. Natesan.
'There is no problem when Christian or Nair community members raise caste-related issues. However, when the Ezhava community speaks about such issues, a big controversy is created,' he said. Mr. Natesan further alleged that the Congress party sidelined former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Sudhakaran because he belongs to the SNDP community.
Many members of the Ezhava community take up the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme works. They lack employment opportunities and are forced to take up such jobs, he said. This situation should be rectified, Mr. Natesan added.
In response, Mr. Satheesan said that Mr. Natesan was saying things that the Guru would not approve of. Communal utterings, regardless of where they come from, should be opposed. Around 52% of the voters in his constituency [North Paravur] belonged to the Ezhava community, and he held a very good relationship with them, Mr. Satheesan added.

Delhi HC seeks police response on Asif Iqbal's plea

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday sought the police's response on a plea filed by student activist Asif Iqbal Tanha challenging framing of charges against him in a case of violence during the 2019 anti-CAA protests in Jamia Nagar area. Justice Sanjeev Narula issued notice to Delhi Police on the plea and posted the hearing for October 30 along with similar pleas filed by Sharjeel Imam and other co-accused in the case. 'Issue notice. Club with others,' the court said. Tanha and others were booked by New Friends Colony Police Station under provisions of the IPC, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act (PDPP) and Arms Act. The trial court in March framed charges, observing Imam's December 13, 2019 speech near the Jamia University was a 'venomous', 'pitted one religion against another' and was 'indeed a hate speech'. It framed charges against Tanha, Imam and nine others, saying 'accused Ashu Khan, Chandan Kumar and Aasif Iqbal Tanha committed abetment by prior conspiracy as well as by instigating violent mob activity at the spot, for which penal provision of Section 109 (abetment) of the IPC is justifiably invoked against them'. Section 109 deals with abetment of an offence and attracting the same punishment given to the offender. The case stems from 2019-2020 protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh following passage of Citizenship Amendment Act in Parliament on December 11, 2019.

If UDF fails, will quit electoral politics: LoP V D Satheesan

KOCHI: Expressing strong confidence in the UDF's victory in the upcoming assembly elections, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan on Monday said that he would keep away from electoral politics if the front fails to secure a resounding win. Responding to the remarks made by SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan against him, Satheesan said he would not engage in personal attacks but is ready to accept Natesan's challenge regarding the UDF's performance in the upcoming polls. 'I am not interested in engaging in an argument with him (Natesan). But he himself has stated that he would step down from his post if the UDF wins 98 seats. That means even he doesn't doubt the possibility of us winning 97 seats in the Assembly election,' said Satheesan. With continued hard work, we will go beyond that number, he added. However, Satheesan made it clear that he is not demanding Natesan's resignation in return. 'Let him remain in that position for a lifetime,' Satheesan said. Commenting on the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of forced religious conversion, Satheesan pointed out that the Christian community is one of the most vulnerable in the current political scenario. 'Priests and nuns are being frequently attacked, especially in BJP-ruled states like Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra,' he said.

Delhi govt orders ACB probe into Barapullah Phase-3 project irregularities

New Delhi: The Delhi government on Monday ordered a vigilance inquiry into alleged "irregularities" in the construction of the Barapullah phase-3 elevated corridor. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta headed an expenditure finance committee (EFC) meeting along with Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, where the decision was taken for an Anti-Corruption Branch probe in the matter. "The irregularities in the project and the payment of Rs 175 crore to the contractor should be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB)," a government statement said. Gupta further alleged "corruption" by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government in the matter of delayed completion of the flyover. According to the government, the elevated road was scheduled for completion in October 2017 but was repeatedly delayed, and eventually the matter went into arbitration. "The ruling favoured the contractor with an award of Rs 120 crore. When the payment was withheld, the company approached the high court, which in May 2023 ordered the PWD to pay Rs 175 crore, including interest and GST. The sum was subsequently paid during the tenure of then-PWD minister Atishi," the Delhi government said in a statement. CM Gupta further criticized the AAP government for "neither filing a review petition nor acting against the responsible officers". "The contractor had initially offered to settle the dispute for Rs 35 crore, but the proposal was ignored, resulting in the escalation of the matter to the high court. The previous government had prevented the company from executing the work," it added. There was no immediate reaction available from the AAP to the queries. "The possibility of PWD officials being complicit in the irregularities and that their actions will be scrutinised under the inquiry," it added. According to officials, the project, which started in 2015, is currently 87 per cent completed. The original estimated cost of the project was Rs 1,260.63 crore, out of which Rs 1,238.68 crore has been spent so far. For the financial year 2025–26, Rs 150 crore has been allocated, of which Rs 86.43 crore had been spent by June 2025.
