Death of 2 navy personnel in Sarangani under probe
'A thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,' the Philippine Navy said in a statement.
The Philippine Navy mourned the loss of its two personnel who died during a recreational diving activity in Sarangani on Monday.
'We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,' the Philippine Navy said.
The military also vowed assistance to their families.
'We are providing full assistance to the bereaved families as part of our commitment to their welfare. Above all, we recognize and honor the service and dedication of our fallen sailors to the country and the Filipino people,' it added.
According to the Philippine Navy, the recreational activity was authorized as the involved personnel were on official leave and wellness break.
The Philippine Navy said it is reviewing and enhancing its protocols for both recreational and operational diving activities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The victims, aged 48 and 50, were conducting a recreational site diving survey 1.2 nautical miles from the shore.
They went missing for more than an hour until they were found floating and unconscious in open water. The two were brought to a hospital but were declared dead upon arrival.
Their colleagues believe the two divers reached a deep portion of the sea when they encountered difficulty breathing underwater. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

3 Pinoys facing charges in US opt for voluntary deportation
NEW YORK —Three Filipinos are currently undergoing voluntary deportation and are being assisted by the Philippine Consulate General offices in New York and San Francisco, California. Among them is a 29-year-old man from Middlesex, Massachusetts, who was previously convicted of rape, aggravated rape of a child, rape of a child with force, four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person over 14. Another Filipino, who is facing terrorism-related charges and is currently detained in Philadelphia, is also receiving assistance from the consulate. According to New York Consular Officer Rovald Valdez of the Assistance to Nationals Section at the Philippine Consulate General in New York, the consulate is processing the travel documents of the two individuals and is awaiting guidance from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding the status of their deportation. He noted that there is a significant backlog of individuals who have applied for voluntary deportation. Voluntary departure is a legal option that allows a non-citizen to leave the United States at their own expense by a deadline set by an immigration judge or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), without receiving a formal removal order. Meanwhile, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco reported that a welfare check was conducted on a Filipino currently detained at the ICE Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora, Colorado. 'The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco conducted a welfare check and consular visit on July 24, 2025, to a Filipino national in detention at the Denver Contract Detention Facility in Aurora, Colorado. The visit was undertaken ahead of the Consulate's Consular Outreach Mission in Colorado on July 25–26, 2025," it said. It added that, during the visit, the Filipino national expressed his desire to return to the Philippines at the earliest possible time. "He also conveyed his appreciation for the consular visit, welfare support, and other assistance provided by the consulate,' the statement further said. Meanwhile, the Consulate in Los Angeles is monitoring the case of a Filipino who was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation due to alleged ties with ISIS. According to Consul Levi Malaylay, the consulate is in contact with the family of 29-year-old Filipino, who is currently in federal custody. The consulate is also coordinating with authorities.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

Suspected underwater drone recovered off Pangasinan waters
An alleged underwater drone has been recovered by local fishermen off Bolinao, Pangasinan waters, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Friday. In a statement, PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the suspected underwater drone was obtained 149 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao on Wednesday. 'On August 6, 2025, while engaged in fishing approximately 149 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao, Pangasinan, the fishermen observed a floating orange object believed to be an underwater drone,' Tarriela said. He said the fishermen, upon returning to port, reported the sighting of the object to the Coast Guard Substation Infanta and submitted a notarized affidavit detailing their discovery. The suspected underwater drone measures around 160 centimeters in length and 20 inches in width and weighs around 100 kilograms, according to Tarriela. Photo: PCG @gmanews — Joviland Rita (@jovilandxrita) August 7, 2025 He said the suspected underwater drone was surrendered to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and analysis. As of May, at least six underwater drones have been found in Philippine waters. Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad earlier said that China possibly deployed some of the recovered submersible drones. 'There is a 55 to 80% likelihood that these were deployed by the Chinese Communist Party,' he said. According to Trinidad, the Philippine Navy has the results for the submersible drones found in Ilocos Norte, Calayan Island, and Misamis Oriental. Many components of these items were made in China. National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Jonathan Malaya called the development 'alarming,' as the underwater drones were used for intelligence purposes. 'These are alarming because, as mentioned by [National Maritime Council spokesperson Undersecretary Alexander Lopez], these are used for intelligence purposes,' Malaya said. 'So this really shows the extent of the operations in the Philippines. We have arrested several, more than 10 agents, Chinese agents in the Philippines, doing different types of espionage activities. And now we have this equipment being used also for intelligence,' he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Robber on motorbike nabbed after motorist gives chase
Two robbers on a motorcycle thought they would get away with stealing money from a pedestrian, until a motorist who saw the crime chased them down in Caloocan City. According to Marisol Abdurahman's exclusive report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, CCTV footage of a portion of McArthur Highway in Caloocan City showed a man standing on the side of the road and a man on a motorcycle nearby, both wearing helmets, seemingly waiting for someone. When a man tried to walk past them, they moved in, pointing a gun at him and taking what turned out to be P152,000 in cash the victim was going to deposit in a bank for his company. They then got on the motorcycle and fled. What the robbers were not expecting was a car that had paused on the road while the incident was going down. When the riders fled, the motorist gave chase. 'Hinabol niya po yung riding-in-tandem hanggang sa naabutan niya at ito'y binangga niya,' said Caloocan Police Investigation Section chief Rommel Caburog. (The driver chased the riders, caught up to them, and hit them with the car.) The suspects fell off their motorcycle. Nearby police arrested one of them, while the other was able to escape. The money was recovered. The Caloocan Police believe the thwarted robbery was an inside job, and that a co-worker of the victim could be involved. 'Sa tingin po namin may tipster po sa loob, nagsasabi na 'O, palabas na si…, magde-deposit na 'yan, abangan n'yo na 'yan,' said Caburog. (We think there's a tipster inside who's saying, 'Oh, he is coming out, he is about to make a deposit, keep an eye out for him.) The authorities also learned that the suspects are part of a robbery-hold-up group in the area. GMA Integrated News reached out to the arrested suspect, who ended up with bruises and scrapes. He refused to comment. The search for his partner continues. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News
