From bootstrapped to scale: Venture builder Disrupt.com to invest $100M to fuel next generation of AI startups from the UAE
Dubai, Feb. 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- While venture capital funding contracted globally in 2024, three founders who turned their bootstrapped startup into a $350M exit are taking a contrarian approach. Today, UAE-based venture builder Disrupt.com announces a $100M commitment to build and back AI-first technology ventures globally.
Founded by Aaqib Gadit, Uzair Gadit, and Umair Gadit - three university friends who grew up in the same household - Disrupt.com represents the founders' reinvestment of capital following their successful 2022 exit of cloud hosting platform Cloudways to US-listed Digital Ocean Holdings. The $350M acquisition marked the largest exit in Pakistan's technology sector to date, with the founders now channeling their entrepreneurial expertise and capital back into the ecosystem through a unique venture building approach from their UAE headquarters.Disrupt.com founders: (L to R) Aaqib Gadit, Umair Gadit and Uzair Gadit.
Having already deployed over $40M across their portfolio – including in four growth-stage companies built from idea stage, seven investments in early-stage companies, and an exit valued at $350 million – this new $100M commitment represents a significant expansion of their venture building activities. With a dedicated team of 650+ professionals, Disrupt.com provides not just capital but also the technical and operational expertise startups need to scale.
'Now is the time to be doubling down on our experience, financial investment and commitment required to help build the next wave of startups that will shape the future of the world as we know it. With Web 3.0 in its infancy and AI storming into our lives, the opportunity to problem solve and create businesses that will fit the needs of how people live and work is up for the taking. Our region can not only keep up, but lead the way. We are excited to see where this journey will take us,' said founding partner Aaqib Gadit.
Unlike traditional venture capital firms, Disrupt.com employs a three-pronged approach to creating value: building their own startups from scratch, co-building ventures alongside external founders, and making strategic investments in early-stage startups and VC funds. Through their unique 'CoBuild' model, they function as fractional co-founders, providing dedicated engineering, go-to-market, and operations teams to drive early adoption in a capital-efficient way.
The firm's $100M commitment targets five strategic sectors: artificial intelligence as a cross-cutting theme, plus cybersecurity, Web3.0, automotive technology, and retail innovation. Disrupt.com primarily targets pre-seed to Series A stage startups that demonstrate strong organic growth potential and clear paths to profitability, rather than pursuing growth at all costs.
The announcement comes as regional funding has declined sharply, with MENA venture capital investment down 29% to just under $2B in 2024, according to Magnitt. Saudi startups saw a 44% funding drop to $750M, while UAE funding decreased 8% to $613M, creating a challenging environment for early-stage ventures.
Disrupt.com's current portfolio showcases their model's effectiveness, including ZigChain, a Web3.0 platform that has scaled to 500,000+ users and hundreds of millions in managed assets; PureSquare, a cybersecurity venture; and UAE-homegrown fitness apparel brand Squatwolf. The firm has already deployed capital as a strategic investor in several AI-focused startups including organizational transformation platform Agentnoon and climate action scaling tool Ahya.
Bartolome R. Bordallo, Co-Founder & CEO of ZigChain, highlighted the venture builder's distinctive approach: "Some investors write checks. Disrupt.com builds with you. They've helped us scale from a few early adopters to managing hundreds of millions in assets and launching our own blockchain."
Anam Khalid and Wajdan Gul, Co-founders of UAE-based fitness apparel brand Squatwolf, emphasize the founder-first approach: "With Disrupt, you get founder-friendly partners because they're founders themselves. They understand our challenges and opportunities in a way traditional investors simply cannot."
Looking ahead, Disrupt.com will direct its $100M commitment toward ventures with strong product-market fit, well-researched idea-market alignment, and robust unit economics pointing toward profitability.

Why Shopify Stock Is Rising Today
Key Points Investors may be responding to the fact that the E.U. said it won't increase tariffs on the U.S. just yet. But slowing job growth and uncertainty around tariffs could eventually weigh on the economy. Shopify investors should keep a close watch on the company's upcoming quarterly results. 10 stocks we like better than Shopify › Shares of the e-commerce platform company Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP) were rebounding today after stumbling on Friday after a weaker-than-expected jobs report. Investors regained some of their optimism for the company today, as the European Union says it's delaying some retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. for six months. Shopify investors are closely watching for any positive economic news as they prepare for the company's Q2 earnings report due out on Wednesday. Shopify stock was up by more than 5% this morning and had gained 4.8% as of 11:29 a.m. ET. Some positive news ahead of Shopify's upcoming earnings report Profit growth has been slowing for Shopify, and investors will get more details on which direction it's currently headed when the company reports second-quarter results on Wednesday. In the meantime, investors were responding positively to the E.U.'s announcement that it will hold off on any retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., as it tries to strike a trade deal. Investors were spooked on Friday by a weak jobs report for June and significantly revised jobs numbers for May, which caused a sell-off among many stocks on Friday. So any news that the U.S. isn't entering a new stage of a trade war with the E.U. caused investors to respond positively. Shopify's growth is dependent on how well companies are growing in the U.S. and how many new businesses are started. So any slowdown in the economy will weigh down the company's sales and earnings. The latest job data wasn't a good sign, but with today's gains, it appears investors aren't yet sold on the idea that the U.S. economy is slowing down. Shopify investors will know more very soon Wednesday's Q2 report will prove whether investors' optimism is misplaced or not. It's certainly not time to panic about the economy, but there are significant uncertainties right now as hiring slows down and the dust settles on new tariffs. It could take months for both to work their way through the economy, which means the next few quarters will be especially important to watch for Shopify investors. Motive's $150M War Chest Signals All-Out Assault on Fleet Tech Dominance
Motive Technologies is declaring war on fragmented fleet technology. The San Francisco-based company closed a $150 million funding round this week led by Kleiner Perkins, positioning the AI-powered platform for an aggressive expansion that could reshape how fleets manage everything from driver safety to fuel cards. The latest round, which includes participation from new investor AllianceBernstein alongside existing backers, comes just months after Motive secured $30 million earlier this year. Combined, the $150 million in fresh capital gives the company significant firepower to accelerate the future of physical operations. According to the company's announcement, the funding will enable Motive to accelerate growth by further expanding AI capabilities, scaling internationally, and sustaining momentum with enterprise customers. What started as a fleet management company a few short years ago has evolved into something approaching the 'everything app' for commercial fleets. Motive now operates across five core verticals: fleet management, driver safety, equipment monitoring, spend management, and workforce management, all unified under what the company calls its AI-powered Operations Platform. Fleets can manage AI-powered dashcams that detect everything from fatigue and distraction to smoking in cab, fuel cards with fraud protection guarantees up to $250,000, workforce management tools that track driver qualifications and training, and preventive maintenance systems, all feeding into a single analytics dashboard that promises natural language queries by year-end. Motive's competitive moat lies in its AI capabilities, built on data from nearly 100,000 customers and 1.3 million drivers across industries from transportation to construction. The platform captures billions of miles of driving data monthly, feeding machine learning models that the company says achieve accurate detection rates for high-severity behaviors. Recent AI innovations include Motive AI Coach, the industry's first AI avatar delivering personalized driver coaching at scale. The system analyzes weekly driver performance across safety, fuel efficiency, and compliance metrics, then generates customized feedback through virtual coaching sessions. The platform's latest AI features detect driver fatigue through multiple indicators, including yawning, eye rubbing, and abnormal speed changes. Lane swerving detection and unsafe parking alerts add additional layers of safety monitoring, while fraud detection combines vehicle telematics with payment data to automatically decline suspicious fuel card transactions. The funding comes as fleet technology markets consolidate around comprehensive platforms rather than point solutions. The competitive dynamics extend beyond traditional telematics providers. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are all investing heavily in commercial vehicle AI, while startups like Samsara have raised billions for competing platforms. Motive's response appears focused on depth over breadth, building superior AI models through data advantages rather than racing to new market segments. The new capital will fund aggressive international expansion, with Motive officially launching in the UK this August. The company has already gained recognition in the region, being named one of Built In's '7 Hardware Companies in the UK to Know' ahead of its formal market entry. The UK expansion represents Motive's first major European market entry and reflects growing international demand for AI-powered fleet management solutions. The company is already seeing rapid growth in Mexico, driven by rising demand for fleet safety and sustainability solutions across North America. Enterprise customers represent Motive's fastest-growing segment, with the platform now serving global leaders. Industry analysts note that companies are finally ready to move beyond patchwork solutions to unified platforms, with Motive's comprehensive approach well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. Motive's platform strategy generates multiple revenue streams from single customer relationships. A fleet might start with dashcams for safety compliance, add fuel cards for spend management, then integrate workforce management and equipment monitoring. Each additional module increases customer lifetime value while creating switching costs that protect market share. The funding will accelerate development of what Motive calls its AI-first architecture. Unlike competitors retrofitting AI onto existing platforms, Motive has rebuilt core systems around machine learning models that improve continuously through real-world data collection. The platform's analytics capabilities represent the next frontier. Motive Analytics promises to unify insights from safety, maintenance, and spend management into natural language interfaces that let fleet managers ask complex questions and receive instant answers. Company executives emphasize that the focus extends beyond data collection to actionable automation that makes fleets safer and more profitable without requiring additional human oversight. Bloomberg reported last year that the company could go public by the end of 2025. The latest funding round maintains Motive's position as one of the most valuable private companies in fleet technology, with earlier rounds valuing the business at $2.85 billion. The path to public markets appears increasingly clear. Motive serves nearly 100,000 customers across multiple industries, demonstrating the scale and diversification that public investors demand. The platform's recurring revenue model, combined with expanding customer lifetime values, provides the predictable growth metrics that support premium valuations. Motive's funding success is a broader trend that's reshaping commercial transportation. Fleets are moving beyond compliance-focused technology toward platforms that optimize operational efficiency, driver retention, and financial performance. The integration of AI, telematics, and financial services represents a fundamental shift in how transportation companies view technology investment. The implications extend beyond trucking. Construction, oil and gas, utilities, and other physical economy sectors face similar challenges around workforce management, equipment monitoring, and operational efficiency. Motive's platform approach could provide a template for technology adoption across industries where physical assets and mobile workforces dominate, with the UK expansion serving as a test case for broader European market penetration. For competitors, the funding round intensifies competition in markets that many considered mature. Traditional telematics providers, focused on location tracking, now face platforms that promise comprehensive operational transformation. The question becomes whether established players can match Motive's AI capabilities or risk losing customers to more sophisticated alternatives. What seems inevitable is that Motive's comprehensive platform approach, combining safety, operations, and financial management in a single AI-powered system, represents the future of fleet technology. The funding provides resources to execute that vision at a global scale, potentially reshaping how millions of commercial vehicles operate across the physical economy. For an industry long defined by fragmented technology solutions, Motive's integration strategy could prove as transformative as the AI capabilities that power it. The $150 million funding round ensures the company has the resources to execute its vision of comprehensive fleet technology platforms at a global scale. Mike Parrish Appointed as CEO, Howden U.S. and Jim Hays as Vice Chairman, Howden Group Holdings
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Howden, the global insurance intermediary group, today announces the appointment of Mike Parrish as Chief Executive Officer, Howden U.S., and of Jim Hays as Vice Chairman, Howden Group Holdings. Mike will build a next-generation U.S. retail broking business for clients and talent, bringing Howden's unique employee-ownership driven and client-centric model to the largest and most dynamic insurance market in the world. Jim will bring more than 40 years' U.S. insurance industry experience to the Howden Group Board. Mike is one of the industry's most successful business builders, with a proven track record of scaling highly successful U.S. operations. His appointment reflects Howden's approach to empowering the very best leaders in each territory to build great businesses by attracting exceptional talent and giving that talent the freedom to put their clients at the heart of the business. Mike spent the best part of two decades at Aon, where he built a market-leading business, before joining Marsh in 2021. He will join Howden in September, subject to the fulfilment of relevant contractual obligations. Jim is a deeply experienced U.S. insurance executive and entrepreneur who previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Hays Company, an insurance broker which he founded in 1994 and sold to Brown & Brown in 2018. He served as Vice Chair and as a member of the Board of Brown & Brown, Inc. He started Hays as a seven-person operation and oversaw more than 25 years of growth to build one of the leading independent U.S. brokers. Howden started with three people in 1994 and has become a top 10 global broker with more than 22,000 people, including nearly 6,000 employee shareholders who own 34% of the Group. It has done this by attracting entrepreneurs to build businesses across 56 countries, today managing $47 billion in premiums and providing a full-service offering across retail, specialty, and reinsurance broking, risk capital advisory, employee benefits, and underwriting and program management. Howden already has substantial operations in the U.S. where more than a quarter of its revenue is generated. It has operated in the U.S. for more than a decade through DUAL, one of the world's largest Managing General Agents, through Howden Re, one of only four global reinsurance brokers, and through many years of supporting US-domiciled clients as their wholesale broker in international markets, with more than $18bn of US premiums today. Jim Hays, Vice Chairman, Howden Group Holdings, said: 'I could not be more energized to join this incredibly exciting, deeply ambitious Group with its army of entrepreneurs dedicated to serving clients. And of course, to work with David, who is in my view one of the most visionary leaders in business today. I was privileged to count Neil Armstrong as a personal friend, so the fact that the news of Howden's further investment in the USA was first rumoured in the press on the 21st July - the day an American first walked on the Moon – was particularly apposite for me.' David Howden, CEO, Howden, said: 'From the beginning we built Howden on the principle that if we look after our people they will look after our clients. This means we hire great people and get out of their way, truly empowering them to do what's best for their clients. This is why our organic growth consistently outperforms the market. 'Mike's appointment is an incredibly important moment in our 30-year history of building a global group with an energetic and entrepreneurial culture, owned by the people who work in it. The foundation of our success has always been in finding the right leaders who are driven to build a business they can be proud of. In Mike we've found one of insurance's most outstanding leaders, with an owner's mindset and an unrivalled track-record, who wants the freedom to build a business that is an alternative home for talent and clients in the U.S. And in Jim we have one of the most accomplished entrepreneurs in the U.S., who brings a wealth of experience to the Group Board as we accelerate towards our ambitious 2030 vision. 'I am passionate about the role insurance can play in the world, facilitating growth and helping to solve some of the biggest challenges we are facing. In a consolidating market we're answering a clear desire from clients, insurers, and talent for choice by being the destination for top talent. And I am especially proud that when others in the broking market are cutting costs, we are investing to create jobs in the U.S. to provide better service to clients. We will combine the full weight of our global capabilities to deliver expertise and service with a difference in the U.S. and internationally. 'Our doors are now open. We can't wait to get started.'
