Teenager forced to expose herself in Met Police strip search says she may ‘never feel normal again'

Independent7 hours ago

A woman who was strip-searched by police when she was just 15 and forced to expose her intimate parts while on her period has said she does not know if she will ever 'feel normal again'.
The black schoolgirl was inappropriately searched at a school in Hackney, east London, in 2020 after she was wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis.
A four-week tribunal found on Thursday that the two Metropolitan Police officers involved in the search, trainee detective constable Kristina Linge and Pc Rafal Szmydynski, were guilty of gross misconduct. They have both been dismissed without notice, while a third officer was found to have committed misconduct and given a final written warning.
The victim, identified only as Child Q due to her age at the time of the incident, said she 'cannot go a single day without wanting to scream' since the incident.
In a statement released via Bhatt Murphy Solicitors, she said: 'Someone walked into the school, where I was supposed to feel safe, took me away from the people who were supposed to protect me and stripped me naked, while on my period.
'I can't go a single day without wanting to scream, shout, cry or just give up. I don't know if I'm going to feel normal again. But I do know this can't happen to anyone, ever again.'
The victim did not speak during the tribunal.
The woman's mother, who says she attended every day of the month-long tribunal, says though she is 'relieved' that the two officers have been found guilty, she believes the Met Police 'still has a huge amount of work to do … to win back the confidence of Black Londonders'.
The tribunal was told how black children were more likely to be treated as adults and less vulnerable than their white peers. But neither race nor age were found to be a factor in how Child Q was treated.
Commander Kevin Southworth, head of Public Protection in the Met Police's Frontline Policing team, described the strip-search of Child Q as 'truly regrettable'.
"The experience of Child Q should never have happened and was truly regrettable,' he said.
"We have sincerely apologised to Child Q since this incident happened. Again, I am deeply sorry to Child Q and her family for the trauma that we caused her, and the damage this incident caused to the trust and confidence black communities across London have in our officers."
The force said the schoolgirl was searched on 3 December 2020, when police were called after staff raised concerns that she smelled strongly of cannabis and may have been in possession of drugs.
Two female officers conducted a more thorough search of the girl, which exposed intimate parts, in the medical room at the school, according to police, but no appropriate adult was present. No drugs were found.
The Children's Commissioner's latest report revealed that a child was strip searched every 14 hours between January 2018 and June 2023, with official data suggesting an appropriate adult was not present in 45 per cent of searches.
Lynn Perry, chief executive of children's charity Barnardo's, said: 'It's deeply worrying that strip searching children is so common, so frequently done without proper safeguarding, and that Black children are four times more likely to be strip searched than children from other backgrounds.
'It's essential that policing is done with respect and safety, and that children and young people can trust the criminal justice system.'

Disneyland fake-wedding paedophile staged series of stunts involving girls

A convicted paedophile who faked a Disneyland wedding to a nine-year-old had previously staged a series of lavish stunts with young girls, a court has heard. Jaskarn Singh Jhaj posed as a producer to turn a National Trust property into a film set, hired the Odeon Leicester Square for a fake premiere and set up a dance school for eight to 14-year-old girls at which he turned up in a Bugatti supercar to greet them. On Friday, Isleworth Crown Court heard that 39-year-old Jhaj staged the events in order to meet young girls and underage teenagers in the hope of engaging in sexual activity with them. Earlier, this week it emerged that Jahj had travelled to France, where he was arrested by the French police after staging a fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl from Ukraine at Disneyland Paris on Saturday. French prosecutors said Jhaj faces several counts of fraud, abuse of trust, money laundering and identity theft after his arrest at the theme park in Marne-la-Vallee. The nine-year-old Ukrainian girl had arrived in France with her 41-year-old mother two days before the mock ceremony. Police were called by a 'guest' who later claimed he was hired for the wedding – which cost a total of £110,000 to stage – to play the father of the bride, only to realise 'at the last minute that she was nine years old'. 'He poses a risk of sexual harm to female children' The Metropolitan Police obtained a 10-year extension from the court to an existing Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) imposed on Jhaj in 2016 after he was convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls he had picked up after driving around Hounslow. Jhaj gave the girls a lift in his Range Rover, bought them meals, alcohol and gifts and pretended to be a famous film producer. He was sentenced to four years in prison and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Following his release from Brixton Prison in October 2017, the Met applied for a SHPO against him. This week, the Met Commissioner went to court to obtain an extension to the order after evidence emerged that Jhaj had gone on to stage a series of stunts with the aim of attracting young girls. Benedict Scantlebury, prosecuting, told the court: 'The 2016 convictions for sexual activity with two females under the age of 16, and the seriousness of the underlying facts of those offences demonstrates that the Respondent [Jhaj] poses a risk of sexual harm to the public, namely to female children. '[Jhaj] has gone to great lengths and significant financial expense to engineer situations in which he is able to have contact with female children, including those under the age of 16. 'He has organised large-scale filming events in ways to avoid a breach of SHPO due to the presence of adult supervision, but which evince the efforts he is willing to go to in order to have contact with female children and which could readily escalate into grooming.' Fake film set and premiere Isleworth Crown Court heard that in August 2021, Jhaj had turned the National Trust's Waddesdon Manor, in Buckinghamshire, into a set where he was filmed firing a machine gun from the turret of one of several armoured vehicles. Cast and crew for the production grew so concerned over his behaviour towards a 16-year-old actress that they stopped filming and called police. In October 2023, Jhaj hired the Odeon Leicester Square to stage a fake premiere at which 100 children aged seven to 14 were told to act like fans, reaching out and touching him. The court heard that Jhaj – who changed his name by deed poll to London JA – had used other aliases to make these bookings 'such that the casting agencies were not aware he was a registered sex offender'. Other stunts followed, including a fake funeral at Brompton Cemetery and the London Oratory, using young female actors. In June last year, Jhaj, who also used prosthetics to alter his appearance, went on to hire a choreographer to attend a dance school in Tower Hamlets, where a group of girls aged eight to 14 were led outside as he pulled up in the Bugatti. Mr Scantlebury told the court: 'The respondent [Jhaj] interacted with the group of children and handed them gifts. The families were not aware that he was a registered sex offender.' Isleworth Crown Court was shown a number of films posted to social media by Jhaj in which he appeared with several young women, including schoolgirls. In one, posted on YouTube in May 2020, under the title 'Dangerous Sexual Predator, Jacky Jhaj of West London', he is seen sitting bare-chested in the front seat of a car with a number of girls in the back, including one wearing a school uniform. DC Andy Hawse, of Hounslow public protection unit, told the court: '[Jhaj] gets in with her. The film cuts before what is assumed to be some form of sexual activity.' In other footage, a group of young girls are filmed screaming and touching Jhaj as he supposedly leaves prison escorted by his security staff. Another video from 2020 shows a young woman lying on the back seat of a car, with her bare legs in the air. 'Absurd grandiose thinking' The court heard that it was unclear where Jhaj, from Feltham, west London, had obtained the funds to pay for these stunts. He registered multiple companies with Companies House, along with the names of fake directors, to arrange and pay for the events. His sister-in-law told police officers, who recently attended the family home looking for him, that she had not seen him for months. UK police officers have been in contact with French authorities following Jhaj's arrest across the Channel, where he had travelled in breach of his requirement to notify police of his movements. He has been remanded in custody by the French authorities for four months. Following a half day hearing, Judge Martin Edmunds KC, the recorder of Kensington and Chelsea, ruled that Jhaj 'is at risk of further sexual offending'. Granting an extension of the SHPO until November 2034 in his absence, Judge Edmunds stated: 'The stunts show absurd, grandiose thinking. They feed and illustrate his dangerous sexual preoccupation with young children, and also his defiance of controls. 'The total absence of any evidence showing that the defendant is seeking to address appropriately his preoccupation with children means a lengthy order is necessary.'

Enormous house explosion that put two in hospital 'was caused by gas used to make super-strength cannabis oil'

An enormous house explosion that hospitalised two people is suspected to have been 'caused by gas used to make a super-strength cannabis oil'. The blast on Thursday in Spring Hall Grove, Halifax, West Yorkshire, has left two men in a critical condition, with a 'large number of butane gas canisters' found in the wreckage. Up to 14 homes were evacuated by the explosion that appeared to rip off at least one home, sending debris into the streets. Now, the significant number of butane gas canisters found at the scene are believed to be evidence of mass production of Butane Hash Oil (BHO), a strong and concentrated cannabis extract. Known for its high THC levels, often exceeding those of traditional cannabis, the drug is typically consumed through dabbing, a relatively new method of ingesting the substance. Produced through a chemical process that uses butane to extract the oils from cannabis, the drug process has gained increased popularity across the UK, USA and Australia. Photographs taken in the immediate aftermath of the explosion showed hundreds of gas cannisters scattered across the scene, appearing to have been stored in an upstairs bedroom. In an updated statement on the explosion, West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a 'large number of butane gas cannisters' had been found at the property and that they were 'forming part of our ongoing enquiries'. The force, who said they were working alongside West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in investigating the fire's circumstances, also confirmed that two adult males had been taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' and that they 'remain in hospital in a critical condition'. Detective Chief Inspector Clare Smith added: 'We understand that there will be speculation in the community about what has happened and the cause of this explosion. 'We are working alongside specialist fire investigators to ensure a comprehensive investigation is carried out into this incident.' One local witness, who lives around 20 metres from the blast, described the explosion as 'like a nuclear bomb going off'. They added: Everyone was screaming "get out of the house". 'I got my kids out and we went in the back. There's bricks and tiles in the street, all the cars are dented, and there are butane gas canisters in the street. 'There was a family with children living next door to the house and a middle-aged woman with a dog. 'Our house was shaking and could feel the whole thing tremble when the first bang went off. The force, who said they were working alongside West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in investigating the fire's circumstances, also confirmed that two adult males had been taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' and that they 'remain in hospital in a critical condition' Pictured: the aftermath of the explosion which caused a huge fire with flames and smoke erupting into the sky 'I looked outside and there was fire everywhere.' Meanwhile, Sheena Bashir was awoken by the blast which happened less than a minute's walk from her home. Describing the explosion as 'unreal', she said: 'You see stuff like that in the movies, not round here. 'I was asleep and then I heard something like a bomb had gone off. I looked out of the window and could see the house was absolutely lit.' While Mrs Bashir was on the phone to the emergency services, smaller bangs after the initial blast could be heard. She said: 'There was one big bang and a lot of smaller ones.' Sophie Storer, 19, only moved to the street two weeks ago, and saw the flames after the explosion. She told MEN: 'I went upstairs about 12 and heard a massive bang. I looked out my window and I just saw red and orange rising up. 'My mum and Bougie were asleep. They came upstairs and we started filming to see what was going on.' Produced through a chemical process that uses butane to extract the oils from cannabis, the drug process of Butane Hash Oil (BHO) has gained increased popularity across the UK, USA and Australia. 'It's my birthday today and it's going to be a memorable one. It was a birthday with a bang for sure.' Shakes Hussain, 40, added: 'All the houses were shaking. I heard a big bang and then it was straight fire. 'It sounded like a big blast. I was scared, could hear people screaming. I got no sleep because I was scared and worried.' In a previous statement, West Yorkshire Police said that they had been called to the property at Coventry Street, Halifax, at 12.04am. They also confirmed that two people from one property had been taken to hospital with serious injuries, while a third person, from another property, had received treatment for minor injuries. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We sent five crews, plus the technical rescue and command unit. 'The explosion had affected six houses. Crews used large jets and an aerial ladder to extinguish the fire' A police corden continues to remain in place on Coventry Street as Northern Powergrid employees continue to work in and evacuated terraced properties.
