Yamal takes iconic Barcelona number 10 shirt

Young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal inherited the club's number 10 shirt, previously worn by all-time great Lionel Messi, on Wednesday.
"Messi made his path and I will make mine," Yamal told reporters at an event at the club shop at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium.
"I will work as hard as I can, give everything and try to make those Barca fans who are there happy and those who are at home."
The 18-year-old winger, often compared to the Argentine superstar who also came through the club's La Masia youth academy, helped the Catalan giants win a domestic treble last season.
He signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2031 in May, becoming one of the best paid players at the club.
"I hope to enjoy myself more than last year and make my dreams come true," continued Yamal, who said he wanted to win the Champions League with the Catalan giants, and also the World Cup with Spain.
Yamal has scored 25 goals for the club in over 100 appearances, making his debut in 2023 at the age of 15 wearing the number 41 shirt.
"Barca is my life, I've been here since I was seven, for all kids from La Masia their dream is to make it to the first team and I'm doing it and I have to keep working," said Yamal.
"When I was little I dreamed of being at Barca and having this number."
After a season wearing the 27, last summer Yamal followed in Messi's footsteps by taking the number 19, which the Argentine wore at the club between 2005 and 2008.
Ansu Fati inherited Messi's number 10 shirt in 2021, when now Inter Miami player left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain.
Beset by a series of injuries Fati was unable to fulfil his potential at Barca and signed on loan for Monaco earlier in July.
Other star names including Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo have worn the Barcelona number 10 shirt in the past.
"(Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho) are three legends of football, three legends of this club," said Yamal.
"I am grateful for what they gave the club and I will try to continue this legacy."
Yamal made headlines after celebrating his 18th birthday last weekend with a private event involving hired entertainers with dwarfism.
Spain's Ministry of Social Rights asked the public prosecutor to investigate the party after a complaint from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE).
"In the end I work for Barca, I play for Barca, but when I'm away from (the club) I enjoy my life, and that's all," he added.

Desiree Ellis remains committed to Banyana Banyana despite Wafcon struggles

BANYANA Banyana legend Jermaine Seoposenwe with coach Desiree Ellis, played her last match for Banyana Banyana on Friday. | BackpagePix Banyana are set to finish fourth at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations finals which is set to conclude Sunday night after relinquishing their crown. Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she'll continue to 'trust the process' as her team turns over a new chapter after an underwhelming continental outing. After getting out of the group stage comfortably, they were not convincing in the knockout stage as they beat Senegal on penalties in the quarter–final and lost 2-1 to arch-rivals Nigeria in the semi-final. Banyana were not at their best in the third/fourth place play-offs either as they lost to Ghana 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time Friday night. Their shortcomings in the crucial stages of the tournament somewhat hinted at the toll the team took prior to the tournament following another bonus row with Safa. Ellis said they were at the tournament to win it during her post-match press conference at Stade El Arbi Zaouli in Casablanca though. 'Everyone that goes to a tournament has the ambition of winning it - Nigeria have been the only country that has defended it, though they didn't at times,' Ellis said. 'Equatorial Guinea won it twice, but we didn't get there - but it was so, so close. I think what happened there (against Nigeria) took a lot out of the players. 'We knew that we were going to play in the play-offs match, but we unfortunately didn't do well today.' Banyana's shortcomings in Morocco have seen some members of the football fraternity call for Ellis to be released, citing that she's out of sorts. This is due to the fact that the team needs a new direction and strategy given that some key players have already called time on their international careers, while others are close to. Jermaine Seoposenwe retired from international football after Wafcon, saying she's taking care of her well-being, while Thembi Kgatlana withdrew from being considered for the event, citing personal reasons. Ellis, though, insists that she's still the right coach to usher Banyana to a new era having been the brains behind Banyana's first qualification for the World Cup in 2019 and triumph at Wafcon in 2022. 'I have been with the team since 2014 as an assistant, 2016 as an acting coach and 2018 as the head coach - so it's a process,' Ellis reflected. 'Unfortunately, the process is always to win. That is the thing with fans, they don't see the bigger picture. So, we trust the process. 'We are also a team in transition. We trust the process, but fans don't trust the process - all they want is results. 'They don't see what you are doing and how the team is evolving, they don't see those things. When you are in the national team, fans want results.'

Banyana Banyana evolved under Desiree Ellis but it it seems her time is up

So, enter Ellis. In a space of five years she changed all that - won Wafcon and qualified for back-to-back global showpieces in France and Australasia. Before she took over the reins, Banyana had never qualified for the World Cup - let alone win the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. Her journey has been fulfilling and rewarding in a personal and collective capacity as she defied the odds and led Banyana to improbable achievements. Ellis has given her all for the national team, transforming Banyana from being 'the other team' to becoming powerhouses of continental football. The ol' adage 'a good dancer knows when to leave the stage' couldn't have been more befitting for Banyana Banyana's coach Desiree Ellis at the moment. The success story of the national team made every 'girl child' to dare to dream, with the semi-pro Hollywoodbets Super League also becoming the springboard of women's football. People started to take interest in women's football, while the number of exported players increased rapidly as well. Ellis didn't walk in the shadows during the transform - she basked in its glory as well, getting deserved recognition from all and sundry. Apart from her four CAF Coach of the Year awards, she was conferred with Order of Ikhamanga and Honorary Doctorate by Cape Peninsula University of Technology. These are things that the little girl who was born in Kuilsrivier more than six decades ago mustn't have dreamt of when she started playing football with boys. After all, her football career didn't tell that she'd gone on to get the highest recognition from the No 1 civilian, having earned 32 caps for Banyana. But she changed that. So, such have been the change of fortunes in Ellis' career, she's now one of the most decorated coaches in continental football - male and female. While her coaching prowess and abilities to overcome adversities are undisputed, Ellis' team has lost bite in the last few years. And that's worrisome - to say the least. You see, I am not saying take your eyes off the inevitables such as squad revamps, injuries, form or external challenges caused by Safa, but the team itself doesn't look the same. And so, sadly for Ellis, since the buck stops with her in making sure that the team performs on the pitch, she has to shoulder the responsibility and blame. We have to be honest that the game continues to evolve, and the majority of players who play abroad are exposed to the highest level of performance-based coaching. And without criticising Ellis' ability to blend the local-based and overseas-based players, but the gulf in quality, across board, will always be there. Take for instance what happened at Wafcon - the absence of Thembi Kgatlana, who withdrew from the tournament due to personal reasons, was evident.

'Upset' Messi suspended over MLS All-Star no-show: league

US - Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba have been suspended after the duo skipped Major League Soccer's All-Star Game earlier this week, the league said Friday. MLS said in a statement Messi and Alba would be unavailable for Saturday's clash against FC Cincinnati "due to their absence" at this week's All-Star showpiece. "Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match," the league said in a brief statement. Messi and Alba had both been selected to play for a combined MLS side in Wednesday's game against a team drawn from Mexico's Liga-MX as part of the league's All-Star break. However, both players withdrew from the showpiece early Wednesday for reasons that were not revealed. The 11th-hour snub left Messi and Alba both facing sanction. Under MLS rules, players selected for the All-Star game must participate unless they have a valid reason - such as an injury - not to do so. MLS commissioner Don Garber said Friday the league had been left with no choice but to suspend players from duty this weekend, describing the ruling as a "very difficult decision". "I know Lionel Messi loves this league," Garber said. "I don't think there's a player - or anyone - who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. "Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision." Garber, however, said MLS would review its existing policy in future. "We're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward," he said. "I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve." - Messi 'very upset' - Inter Miami's billionaire co-owner Jorge Mas blasted the decision to suspend Messi and Alba in a conference call with reporters later Friday, describing Messi as "very upset" by the league's ruling. "Leo Messi is very upset. I hope it doesn't have a long-term impact," said Mas, who is currently in talks with Messi about a possible extension to his current contract, which runs out at the end of this year. "Will it have an impact on (Messi's) perception of the league and it's rules? Without a doubt," Mas added. "Lionel is different from everyone else. He wants to participate in competitive matches." Speaking on Wednesday, Garber said the league should have known earlier about the no-show, but expressed some sympathy for the gruelling schedule faced by Messi in recent weeks. The 38-year-old Argentinian superstar has played nine games in 35 days and played 90 minutes in each game, including four games in the FIFA Club World Cup. "Miami has had a schedule that is unlike any other team," Garber said. "Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't. So we have to manage through that as a league." Messi and Alba's participation in the game had been under a cloud after Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated last weekend he would have preferred the duo to be excused from All-Star duties.
