Bishop McCort, Berlin girls advance to the PIAA Championship
EBENSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) – Just a few weeks ago, Bishop McCort defeated Penns Manor to win the District VI Championship game. On Friday, the Crushers beat the Comets 55-53 to advance to the PIAA Class 2A Championship game for the first time since 2017.
'It's so exciting,' Bishop McCort junior Emma Preuss said. 'We've been just waiting for this moment all season long and we work so hard.'
Bishop McCort trailed the majority of the game, but Ava Zucco's go-ahead free throws with 20 seconds left proved to be the difference.
'Coach (John) Hahn and I always make a joke because I'm like a horrible foul shooter under super a lot of pressure,' Zucco said while smiling. 'It was really funny. I tried not to think about it. I just acted like I was in the gym at practice.'
Meanwhile in the other side of the bracket, Berlin-Brothersvalley advances to face the Crushers with a 41-38 win over Mountain View. This will be the fifth time since 2019 that a Mountaineers basketball team will be playing in the Giant Center.
Berlin's girls team won in its lone appearance back in 2019.

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) – A year after Bald Eagle Area won back-to-back PIAA championships for baseball, the Eagles softball team will play for the Class 3A title. Bald Eagle Area wins back-to-back PIAA Baseball Championship Fueled by Sierra Albright's 12 strikeouts, Bald Eagle Area defeated Susquenita 5-0 on Monday. The Eagles will face Pine Grove Area on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Softball Park. In Class 2A baseball, Mount Union lost 2-0 to Faith Christian in the semifinals. Claysburg-Kimmel softball, the other remaining team in WTAJ's coverage area, will take on Northeast Bradford in the Class 1A semifinals on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Lycoming Elementary School. (AP) — Joaquin Niemann of Chile won LIV Golf Virginia on Sunday for his fourth victory in the Saudi-funded tour's first eight events of the season, closing with an 8-under 63 to beat Graeme McDowell and Anirban Lahiri by a stroke. Niemann broke out of a logjam at the top with birdies on Nos. 14-17 and parred the par-4 18th to finish at 15-under 198 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The 26-year-old Niemann also won this year in Australia, Singapore and Mexico. He has six career LIV victories after winning twice on the PGA Tour. 'Pretty cool to be in this place, in this position right now,' Niemann said. 'I'm pretty thankful.' McDowell shot 66, and second-round leader Lahiri had a 68. Bryson DeChambeau, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense at Oakmont, had a 65 to tie for fourth with Phil Mickelson (65) and Bubba Watson (67) at 13 under. Jon Rahm was 10 under after a 68. DeChambeau and Lahiri led the Crushers to their second straight team title and record eighth overall, with Paul Casey and Charles Howell III completing the lineup.
