Time of India5 days ago
A heartbreaking silence has fallen over a small house in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, a house where two siblings once played, laughed, and dreamed. Now, only grief remains.
The brother and sister were among seven children who died when a government school building in Piplod village collapsed on Friday morning. The collapse has not only shattered several families, but also cast a harsh spotlight on the crumbling state of school infrastructure in rural Rajasthan.

As per a PTI report, the mother of the siblings, speaking through tears, said, 'I had only two children, a boy and a girl. Now both are gone. My house is empty. There's no one left to play in the courtyard. I wish God had taken me instead.'

Her anguish is just one of many heartbreaking stories that have emerged from the tragedy.
On Saturday morning, the air outside the mortuary at
SRG Hospital
was filled with cries of grieving parents. Some held the bodies of their children, wrapped in white sheets, refusing to let go. Others sat silently, still unable to grasp the suddenness of their loss.
Live Events
In a powerful gesture of shared grief, five of the children were cremated together on a single pyre. The remaining two were laid to rest separately.
A mother who lost her child questioned the school's staff: 'Why were the teachers outside? Why did they leave the children alone?' Her words reflected the anger and confusion that many parents now feel.
The children who lost their lives have been identified as Payal (12), Priyanka (12), Kundan (12), Harish (8), Kartik, and siblings Meena (12) and Kanha (6). Most were students of Classes 6 and 7. The youngest was just six years old.
The state government has taken some immediate steps. Five school staff members have been suspended, and a high-level probe has been ordered. Rajasthan's School Education Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each child who died.
District Collector Ajay Singh visited the families and assured them of full support. Speaking to reporters, he said, 'If needed, an FIR will be filed. The suspension of staff could lead to full dismissal. We are not taking this lightly.'
Singh added that the administration would ensure a new school building is constructed and that financial assistance would reach families within 10 days.
However, serious concerns remain. Singh admitted that no prior warning or complaint was received about the unsafe condition of the school building. 'Had we known, we would have repaired it. This tragedy could have been avoided,' he said.
Reacting to a viral video showing rushed patchwork on the road outside SRG Hospital ahead of the minister's visit, Singh said he was not aware of it but would look into it.
The collapse happened just as the children had gathered for morning prayers. Over 35 students were buried under the debris. Locals and school staff scrambled to rescue them. In total, 28 children were injured.
The scene was one of chaos and heartbreak. Concrete slabs, stones and dust covered the ground as anxious parents, teachers and villagers dug through the rubble.
The sorrow quickly turned into anger. Protests broke out at Guradi Circle and outside SRG Hospital. Locals blocked roads and demanded answers. Congress leader Naresh Meena joined the protest briefly before being detained by police.
Tensions escalated when protestors clashed with police. Stones were thrown, and a policeman was injured. Authorities used mild force to disperse the crowd.

Teacher faces show-cause as AI tigers visit school campus

1 2 3 4 5 Kolkata: An AI-generated video showing three tigers on a school campus at Barasat went viral on Wednesday, causing panic among students and guardians and leading to a sharp drop in attendance on Wednesday and Thursday. The video was later found to have been created by a teacher of the school. The school issued a show-cause notice on Thursday, after which the teacher claimed it was part of an awareness campaign to educate students about dangers of blindly trusting AI-generated content online. According to sources, a viral video on social media claimed that not one, but three tigers were prowling on the campus of Ula Kalsara Qadria High Madrasa in Barasat's Kadambagachhi. It had already gone viral on Facebook, and we decided to stop sending our kids to school," said a guardian. Upon hearing the news, concerned parents started calling the headmaster, demanding clarity and safety assurances. Headmaster Monirul Mallik confirmed that the video was digitally created by assistant teacher Mohammad Yamin Mallik, the school's geography teacher. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The video was created using AI by our geography teacher. We are still not clear about his intentions. After receiving calls from parents, we spoke to the teacher and had the video deleted immediately. The school's managing committee will take appropriate steps to ensure such incidents do not happen again," the headmaster said. Mohammad Yamin Mallik said: "I created the video using AI technology to make students aware that not everything they see on social media is real. It was meant to align learning with modern technological trends, beyond textbooks. But I sincerely apologise for the panic it has caused. I want to clarify that there are no tigers or any wild animals on school campus. I have already deleted the video," he said. "The incident has highlighted the double-edged nature of AI tools in educational spaces — while they can be innovative, they must be used responsibly," said Joydeep Lahiri, an AI expert.

Cracks in Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 retaining wall spark landslide fears; residents evacuated

MADIKERI: The first landslide-prone spot on the Mangaluru-Madikeri NH275 that caved in during the 2018 floods is once again under threat, with the multi-crore retaining wall at the site developing major cracks. Residents living right below the wall have been asked to shift to a relief center in Madikeri. Permanent relief work across the Mangaluru-Madikeri National Highway, which has become vulnerable to landslides and road slips, has remained a distant dream from 2018. While crores of funds have been sanctioned for temporary relief works, the National Highway faces the threat of collapse and poses a risk to commuters every monsoon season. This highway is lined with several retaining walls, including the Rs 7.5 crore retaining wall behind DC Office that also faced the threat of collapse and is currently being strengthened. Another retaining wall on this road is located about 4 km from Madikeri city centre and was sanctioned after a major landslide on the road in 2018. Thousands of sandbags were then lined across this vulnerable spot and crores of funds were released for the establishment of the retaining wall. After over five years of project sanction, the retaining wall recorded was completed in 2023. Nevertheless, just two years after its completion, massive cracks have developed on the retaining wall that faces the threat of collapse. Following the development of cracks, Madikeri taluk tahashildar visited the spot and requested the families residing below the retaining wall to shift to a relief centre. Meanwhile, the locals voiced against the authorities for poor quality work and urged them to take action against the concerned contractor. DC Venkat Raja visited the spot and inspected the retaining wall.
