Iraq's NGC struggles with 'deteriorating" operations, unused sulfur
Shafaq News/ North Gas Company (NGC) operations are deteriorating noticeably, Iraqi lawmaker Arshad Al-Salihi said on Thursday, warning that "mountains of sulfur" remain unused in the company's yards.
Al-Salihi, who represents Kirkuk in parliament, urged a complete review of the company's operations, stressing the need for technical expertise to boost gas production. "Iraq has significant gas reserves yet continues to import from Iran and Turkmenistan,' he told Shafaq News.
Appointments within the company, he emphasized, should be based on qualifications rather than political affiliations, as placing qualified professionals in the right positions 'will directly improve NGC's production capacity.'
The MP also pointed to massive sulfur stockpiles left unutilized, describing them as "mountains of sulfur' sitting in the company's yards without any effort to sell or invest in them, urging the government to develop a strategy to market these resources.
Recently, Iraq signed an agreement with BP to develop four oil and gas fields in Kirkuk meant to enhance oil production, expand North Gas Company's facilities, and establish a 400-megawatt power plant.

Iraq's oil production fall by 59,000 barrels per day
Baghdad ( – A senior Iraqi official at the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) revealed on June 2 that the country's oil output in May declined by 59,000 barrels per day as Iraq plans to accelerate measures to compensate for prior overproduction. Iraq's oil production quota rose by 49,000 barrels per day in May, reaching a total of 4.049 million barrels per day, as reported by S&P Global. Since April 2024, eight OPEC+ countries, including Iraq, have resumed their voluntary production cuts of 2.2 million barrels per day. The production limit was set to rise to 411,000 barrels per day in May, June, and July 2025. However, this increase coincides with its compensation plan, which is supposed to compensate for serial overproduction in 2024. In the most recent plan, announced by the OPEC secretariat in Vienna in April, Iraq pledged to produce oil less than its quota by 140,000 barrels per day in May. The volume of crude oil that Iraq exported by sea declined to 3.27 million barrels per day in May 2025 compared to 3.30 million barrels per day in April 2025. According to government sources, Iraq's oil exports in May and June 2025 are expected to be less than 3.2 million barrels per day to meet its OPEC+ production quota. During the first five months of 2025, Iraq's crude oil exports averaged approximately 3.33 million barrels per day, compared to 3.45 million barrels per day during the same period in 2024.

ISX trades +$20M worth of shares in May
Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, the Iraq Stock Exchange (ISX) announced the trading of over 14 billion shares worth more than 28 billion dinars (approximately $20 million) during May. ISX reported that it conducted 18 trading sessions during the month, with 76 out of 104 listed companies participating in the trades. The total shares traded reached 14,216,936,000, valued at 28,702,000,000 dinars ($20,312,809), executed through 12,149 transactions. The ISX60 price index closed at 1017.58 points, marking a 3% increase compared to the previous session's closing. The Iraq Stock Exchange holds five trading sessions weekly from Sunday to Thursday and lists 104 joint-stock companies operating across the banking, telecommunications, industry, agriculture, insurance, financial investment, tourism, and hotel sectors.

Iranian UN Mission reaffirms nuclear stance amid tensions

'If conflict is imposed on us, the opponent's losses will certainly exceed ours,' he stated. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a notice warning vessels in the region of heightened tensions that could lead to increased military activity impacting seafarers directly. The advisory urged caution in the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz. Although it did not name Iran, those waterways have previously been the site of Iranian ship seizures and attacks.
